Holy Crap.. This can't be Life! Almost Argentina's WHOLE SQUAD IS RETIRING! They will never be the same again..
I know BRO.. this is Crazy.. their whole squad is literally retiring.. Argentina is gonna be reduced to a School Yard Soccer team!
Well, was a heart stopping close game as I expected. I am extremely happy. Despite that, we have to admit the ref ruined the game. Neither red was merited imo. However, there a few yellows he didn´t call against Argentina (vs Sanchez, Isla and Aranguiz). Aranguiz to me is underrated, great great player. Now back to Messi, as much as he cannot be my favorite player, and that I consider him a princess that cant be touched in fear of getting carded, the criticism is getting out of hand. He is a good dude and prob. the main reason Argentina has actually made it to 3 finals in a row. He is getting the pressure when that pressure should be distributed not only between the 23 players, but also against Martino and AFA. Maradona has no business criticising Messi. Messi surpassed Maradona as a person by a great margin and should not let the bad vibes from the druggie get to him. I thin Messi should continue, I know for sure the majority of argentines want him there.
I love our game because we change the rules very rarely. But if I could change a rule it would be do away with pks to decide the winner after extra time. Instead use the shoot out. It more like a break away. Keeper can come out the taker starts further away. It would be more interesting then a pk. I saw in a tournament game years ago it went to pks. It was a joke it went 20 players at least before a winner was reached. I told another coach if they took out their keeper and put a garbage can to replace him. The garbage can would have stopped more shots.
I think Messi's resign is brilliant, because he would not have to face the severe critisism directed against him, now everybody will be asking him to return to the NT, that he still is very important to Argentina, the best, etc.
This is very true, he can go back to being the best player in the World, without being questioned about his failures away from Barcelona.
Yes.... Rulli; Mercado, Otamendi, Funes Mori, Rojo, Kranevitter, Pastore, Fernández, Gaitan, Lamela, Dybala. You know, school yard.
BUeno decir que fue un partido infartante y de pizarron que termino ganando PIzzi. SOlo decir que fue emocionante haber estado ahi y sobre todo detras del arco donde se dio la victoria chilena.
Argentina are a disgrace. Messi, worlds best player? Not at major tournaments. He's a choker. I thought Argentina would win for sure. I'm sorry for their fans. They owe them big time. Congrats chile. Awesome team.
Just got back from the match as it took a 3 hour wait for the bus back.. anyhoo... congrats Chile, hard luck Argentina.. there's always 2116 to win the next Centenario... here's the penalty shootout from where I was sitting... Messi almost blew my head off despite being in row 42,615:
Hey guys, I just got back from camping this weekend. Was away from civilization and had no cell phone reception. I just saw that Chile beat Argentina in PKs after a scoreless 120 mins. Guess I didn't miss much excitement. Congrats to Chile!
actually pretty exciting game... it was exactly how you would want a 0x0 draw to go... tons of close calls
Feel gutted for Argentina. I grew up watching Aimar and fell in love with the culture of Argentine Futbol. Hopefully Simeone takes over and new guys get looked at. Would of loved to see Gaitan get the start also being Portuguese I can say with all due respect that Rojo is pure shit Congrats to Chile with a thinner squad they go against the odds. Also I feel sympathetic with all the hate Messi and Argentina get being Portuguese we get the same hate on other forums here on big soccer This forum gets more Xenophobic and racist more and more as time passes Saludos y abrazos
Messi is not just some guy. He is one in a million I see how you think it is an honor to play for your country. I felt that way about playing for my club. I thought is was a honor to play for your club. Today it's all about money concerning the club. But country is different. When I coached I knew it is better to play for club then their school. But I told them if I was them I would play for their school because it is an honor to play for school. Even thought it was better and you get better traning playing for the club.
First of all, it says something about the stature of the Copa America nowadays that players would retire after a Copa America, and not a world cup. That would have been unthinkable in 2004 - in that year, a world cup qualifier was bigger than a Copa America match. But last year was one of the first years I can remember where everyone sent full strength squads (except Mexico). Mascherano is aged 32 and so this would be an understandable decision, however I would have thought he might have waited until 2018 perhaps, but up to him. Fair enough then. Messi though, he has only just turned 29, he is still playing at this peak level, and will be only 30/31 in the next world cup. It's too early. It's an emotional reaction - I'm assuming he didn't think it through and talk to people in advance. An opportunity to be the greatest player of all time is still in play, and he wants to walk away from that chance. That's a shame. He should be allowed to do whatever he wants, but surely 2018, not now, is the time to retire. It's a selfish decision - the team will be weaker without him. Perhaps it will work out well for him if he gets to avoid a few trips to Venezuela, Peru, Brazil that they've got coming up this year - take a rest from international and focus on club and then come back in 2017 or 2018? Then again, they might need him to get the wins in those matches that they need to ensure qualification. Higuaín - if he retires, makes relatively more sense since he is the scapegoat and his place in the team is under real threat anyway. Although I still think he should retire after 2018 instead of now. Those who follow the Argentinian press - is it possibly a way to get rid of the manager - do the players want him replaced? While it's unfair to the manager, and childish from the players, he needs to get the players together and say it's him that needs to take the fall here, and will they play for a new manager (who?). That way, the players get to back down from their rather rapid decisions without having to completely admit it was a badly thought out, snap decision.
Can someone please tell me the best Argentinian website to follow the latest news, match reaction, news about player retirements being up to date etc. I can read Spanish. Thanks.
Just got access to decent internet. I recently moved back to Lima and the place I'm staying at has up and down internet so I wasn't able to comment on last nights game. Terrible performance from Argentina. I've seen some people blame Higuain and I think that's unfair on him, he did miss a sitter but Argentina didn't lose because of him, they lost because on the day the whole team was terrible and was not able to put the game to bed. Lacked creativity, and the defence was kinda dodgy. I hate to admit it but Chile fully deserved to win last nights match as they were the overall better side. They were solid in defence and looked pretty good going forward. Better going forward than Argentina anyways. Jara did a great job last night, was a wall. Its been a good Copa America overall but this has to be one of the worst tournaments I've ever seen when it came to officiating. Normally South American refs aren't great but here they looked even worse than they usually are.
