I didn't think that was a 2nd yellow. I thought Messi ran straight into him.

I could see a whistle for that but caution? Erm...not sure just how tactical a foul that was, Messi pretty much ran straight at him.

My son was in a similar situation as that defender when he was much younger. The attacking player pushed the ball by him and then tried to run right through him, knocking him down. The referee gave the attacking player a caution.

Did the ref not realize that Diaz was already on a YC? He took a while before producing the red.

I'd think so, there was no rush to pull it out so he must not have realized.

And now Messi has his own yellow. Accumulation of sins?

I thought so too. I wonder if he wouldn't have given the yellow had he realized sooner.

Live I thought that could be a straight red. But on the replay, nope. Very tricky by Vidal.

This is certainly one we will be talking about for years.

    Quick takes: yes, no, no.

Yes, he forgot the first caution, no it wasn't a cardable offense, and it wasn't a straight red.

This game is exactly why most referees don't give red cards on major Finals. The media and fans don't want the referee to be the story and here he has become.

    Poor guy is being crucified.

No. Ricci was the Brazilian ref at the 2014 WC.

I'm on tape delay and still in the first half, but I can't imagine refereeing a game like this. Ultimately the teams did bring this on themselves. Too confrontational and too much garbage late.

I agree that I think he forgot he gave the guy a yellow card, but he did take a little bit to produce it. I think if you call that foul it is a yellow card as it stopped the attack, but he could have gone no call too.

The send off did look worse real time than on replay, but I don't know how tackles from behind are viewed in South America.
