I could see a whistle for that but caution? Erm...not sure just how tactical a foul that was, Messi pretty much ran straight at him.
My son was in a similar situation as that defender when he was much younger. The attacking player pushed the ball by him and then tried to run right through him, knocking him down. The referee gave the attacking player a caution.
This is certainly one we will be talking about for years. Quick takes: yes, no, no. Yes, he forgot the first caution, no it wasn't a cardable offense, and it wasn't a straight red.
This game is exactly why most referees don't give red cards on major Finals. The media and fans don't want the referee to be the story and here he has become. Poor guy is being crucified.
Between this and that Galaxy/(5th Division team) Open Cup game, should be some fun clips in our summer State Camps
I'm on tape delay and still in the first half, but I can't imagine refereeing a game like this. Ultimately the teams did bring this on themselves. Too confrontational and too much garbage late. I agree that I think he forgot he gave the guy a yellow card, but he did take a little bit to produce it. I think if you call that foul it is a yellow card as it stopped the attack, but he could have gone no call too. The send off did look worse real time than on replay, but I don't know how tackles from behind are viewed in South America.
This was posted in the PBP thread, and I found it on the Guardian's live commentary. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...america-2016-final-argentina-chile-live-score Dave Rooney writes in to defend the referee. “I believe Rojo was sent off for kicking out at someone while on the ground after his tackle, it’s been shown a couple of times on TV here in Buenos Aires.”
