This completley crap false no.9 "project" has to end ASAP. This has never worked before IMO, the only time I recon to see such an system work was in 2013 when Spain´s U-21 team won the Euro´s, but within our NT - never ever. Especially not with Goetze. He looks so damn lost up there and tends to keep making the sames bad decisions again and again. I hope Onkel Jögi drops this system in favor to put in Gomez and attack mainly with crosses from Draxler/Mueller. Also our Attack was very, very underwhemling. Draxler at least tried to create some form of danger, Özil and Mueller where mostly invisible.

Props to Neuer, Kroos and Boateng though. They kept us alive and running.

Agreed...... Rather have Muller or Gomez play upfront!....
Goetze might do better coming from midfield..or the bench!

As a major advocate of the false 9 idea, I agree its probably time to shelve it at this point. Gomez deserves another shot given his recent performance, and if we're going to be going wide and crossing, which we did a lot of, much to my chagrin, then Gomez is much more effective in that role.

    Hector -
    Khedira ,
    T. Kroos -
    T. Müller ,
    Özil ,
    Draxler -
    M. Götze

    Einwechslungen:
    78. Schürrle für Draxler
    90. B. Schweinsteiger für M. Götze

    Reservebank:
    Leno (Tor)
    ,
    ter Stegen (Tor)
    ,
    Hummels
    ,
    Tah
    ,

    Kimmich
    ,
    Weigl
    ,
    Gomez
    ,
    Podolski
    ,
    L. Sané

Looking at this... Germany really does not have that many options...... If Muller/oezil are not in form we sort of have a problem... I see Muller also had an average game against Hungary - Hope he does not have a form dip right now !

Maybe I am a bit critical.... UEFA website report says Germany played well...also Ukraine Goalie had to pull out 7 saves in total yesterday....more then any other goalie so far.

Pyatov had a great match to deny some of those shots; we have to factor that in.

Germany also had 18 chances , most out of any team so far... 5 off target - 9 on target and 4 blocked....
Most passes made and completed ... most possession, most goals scored ,only team so far to win by a 2 goal margin.....

Still Goetze needs to be benched!

Guys Im not a fan of the false9 either but I guess for why Löw decided to play it instead of a true 9 is to be explained by the defensive setup of our opponents. I say the 9 would be lost in such a bus parking opponent's box. You cannot do combination play with him, you can let fly crosses in but that is in vain if the defenders are mediocre-experienced and talented. Götze dropping back into midfield provides another pass opportunity. And guess what, resitence was wearing thin in the 2nd half because all of the pass opportunities the Ukranians had to cover. Germany has to implement it better(score on chances, better final balls) and yesterday is coasting mode.

It was noticeable last night that there is no pace in the forward line.

Both decent counters were lead by Ozil (save by keeper and Schweni goal) because he is the only player with genuine pace. So you could see in the final 20 mins or so, Ozil started seagulling quite high up to look for that breakout

But obviously it is stupid because Ozil is the one you want to be playing balls thru!

I'd prefer even Schurrle at 9 than Goetze

Euros are typically a very defensive tourney.

I felt Germany played much better in the 2nd half, controlled play and eventually broke thru again.

In the first half, just as he did in the first World Cup 2014 games, Loew had the fullbacks too high up the pitch and this enabled Ukraine to counter dangerously.

Defence was much better in the second half.

I wonder if we will eventually see a 3rd CM and Ozil moved to the left wing to revert to the World Cup power line.

I didn't see Götze as totally useless. He pressed the keeper and defense well enough to force some turnovers. Good movement too and his teammates missed him on a few runs. He's too weak on the ball though, defenders just take it away from him too easily. He needs to shake them off with a move or be stronger on it. Boateng played well but his long range passes were off big time. Özil needs to shoot the damn ball. Too many times he had an opportunity and instead went with the pass. Khedira's first touch was off. I liked Draxler in the second half, he seemed more confident. Hector seemed reliable too. Also watching Kroos play was insane. Maybe it's just me but you really appreciate his pin point accurate passing when seeing the game in person.

need draxler on the wing b/c we don't have any dribbling wingers with pace.

seems the most potent, especially with all the interchanging. Miss Reus.

Would also prefer 3 mids instead of 2. Basti can play if he's 100%. If not, either of Weigl or Kimmich could do the job. Kroos and Khedira both looked dangerous in advanced positions. We'd get more out of them with a pivot taking over the distribution duties.

I would actually give Sane a try on the wing. With Draxler and Sane on the Wing, Özil as 10 and Thomas up front. This way, we would have two pacy wingers, who can dribble and create space for Özil and Müller. But as I know Jogi, he would rather go with Poldi than with Leroy ;)

I love that photo. Kudos to the photographer to get the shot like this!

Generally, I thought we did ok. Still a lot of improvement, especially in the first half, but a confident performance in the second. Neuer was a beast. Mustafi did well individually, but you could tell that he hasn't played much with Boateng and Neuer yet and that there were some communication issues. Boateng was good defensively, the long diagonal passes were off though.
