It's sad that this type of behaviour has to be associated with football. It's a disgrace to the game. And on a national stage, it's a game that brings countries all over the world together. Not pin each other against in violence. Especially given what happened in Paris last year, you'd think there'd be more respect surrounding this tournament. Win. Lose. Draw. It's supposed to be a celebration.
Security is pretty poor at the Velodrome too. The sections behind the goal are huge and hard to control. After all the fighting in the streets of Marseille they should have increased police presence inside stadium and ran a few lines of police splitting the crowd up into smaller and easier to manage sections. It's not a strategy I would use in every game because it hurts atmosphere, but since these fans already had problems leading up to the match I think it would have been a good emergency measure.
A good performance from England. So much better than in recent tournaments. There were mistakes but this is a team for the future. From the footage available it looks like the Russians who are mostly responsible for the trouble.
I agree. This young English side is by far more watchable than the one with the likes of Lampard and Gerrard
Dear oh dear, where do I even start... Sterling and Lallana over Vardy and Barkley, Kane taking corners and subbing off your captain for a Weetabix built player. Looks like Hodgson needs to sort himself out before it is too late. He still has time to do that, all he needs to do is to think about what he has done tonight that has cost our nation the match by the time we play Wales. Meanwhile we must carry on going as a nation supporting our country until the end.
Is Vardy injured? England had all kinds of chances to score, but since they obviously couldn't finish, it was time to bring in a finisher. Milner?
It's high time to penalize Russia for this. This has become a part of Russian national character - bullying other countries, bullying other countries' fans. Russian people, especially the common thugs, are a mirror of the nation at large.
Sterling was a disaster in the second half. England clearly better then Russia but could not finish there chances. Reminds me of Spurs there in the end how they blew the lead.
No need to get to downhearted at yesterday's performance. Mostly it was very good. Lessons to be learned, of course. No-one was expecting us to win the tournament. It is a learning process and we need to improve but there is certainly something to build on. On the trouble I want to know why the French police don't do some things that UK police do. When there are organised hooligan groups, which the Russian black shirts clearly are, the police should surround them and escort them. They should not be allowed to just run amok. In the UK the identities would be taken and the people searched. Got a knife? Oh dear you're doing time for that. The difference between proactive and reactive.
