FYI, that 2008 semi-final in Charleston was against the Seattle Sounders when they were still in USL, (their last year in the league). So, MLS wasn't "outbid" in that instance.

The question was, "Since MLS started, what's the latest round a club below MLS has hosted a game in?"
Charleston v. Seattle in 2008 was still a late round game hosted by a lower division team.

Who said anything about MLS being outbid? I was just pointing out that hosting used to be under a different system so it is hard to compare the different eras. Before the current draw system a lower division team hosting in the later rounds was going to be rare. The fact that that semifinal was USL against USL obviously increased the chances of a USL team hosting. If it had been Charleston v. MLS Seattle then they almost certainly would not have hosted since Seattle would have out-bid them.

Notice my second caveat about neutral sites. That also lowered the chances of a lower division team hosting in the late rounds.

Whoa, stand down Professor Newtex, I wasn't looking for a fight or trying to contradict anything anyone else had said, just pointing out something that hadn't been mentioned since there was also discussion about bidding on this thread.

Here's the 3rd round update of my ever popular* league ELO rankings.

    *not at all true

Some basic info, for those who want it:
    1. These rankings use all USOC games since 1996 to determine the relative strengths of the leagues. The names used below just represent the current names of leagues at that level. In reality the leagues have changed around a lot, and what is now NASL used to be USL D-1, and the A League before it. Similarly for all the other levels.
    2. There are bound to be mistakes back in the history, but the beauty of ELO rankings is that they are self-correcting over time, so the "actual strengths" probably aren't too far off from this right now, even with errors in older competitions.
    3. The actual results used are as follows:
    a. Game finishes in regulation with a result: goals scored
    b. Game finishes after extra time with a result: goals scored
    c. Game goes to penalty kicks: goals scored before the penalty kicks. The game is "recorded" as a tie.
    4. A home team has its rating raised by 100, and the change in ratings for each of the teams is calculated based on the result of the game, and the relative difference between the two ratings. This means that currently, we would expect an NASL team hosting an MLS team to be slightly in favor of the MLS team, but not significantly so.
    5. The average change in score for any individual game is about 7. This means that one league goes up by 7, and the other down by 7.
    6. There is no way to account for the fact that many MLS teams play 'B' or 'C' sides in the first few rounds they participate. I can only base it on the teams fielded.

    RoundMLSNASLUSLPDLNPSLUSASA/etc
    2015180015801612134313021362
    R1180015801612134413041358
    R2180015801605136012921362
    R3180016021577137212891359

PDL picked up some points, continuing its rise throughout this year's tournament. The NPSL score is now final. The USASA score you'd only really expect to go up at this point. They will be heavy underdogs against MLS competition, even if they *do* play the Galaxy, who have a history of fielding inferior squads. Since they are heavy underdogs in that game, their score basically won't go down by much if they lose, but it will go up tons if they pull the upset.

EDIT: thecup.us has a messed up result for the Jacksonville game, I've corrected it in the score above, and rewritten my comments on NASL and USL.
NASL made up some ground against USL, basically switching their scores with each other. They weren't far out from equal at the end of last year, and that stays true so far, but in the other direction. They were able to go 6-2 against USL this year. However, 7 of those games were at home, where you'd expect them to win more often than not.

Not necessarily. After the next round the USSF will divide the remaining 16 teams into 4 geographic groups and then have a draw to determine a fixed bracket for the last rounds.

The winners of the NYCFC/Cosmos game and the winner of the Rochester/Red Bulls game would probably be in the game group of 4 but they might not get paired up in the Round of 16.

Shh, it's a trick to keep the haters away.

If you claim that something isn't popular, but you're posting it anyways, people who hate it will be less likely to post about it!

BUT if you leave out any claims, or imply that someone might like it, and someone hates it, they will spam the thread with how much they hate it and the poster should die in a fire.

The NYCFC vs. Cosmos game will be on YES for NYCFC and One World Sports for the Cosmos. I'm wondering when the last time was that a soccer game was on TV simultaneously on two English channels available in the same place (either two national channels or one national channel and one regional channel). When the Red Bulls went to the Cosmos in the 2014 U.S. Open Cup, One World Sports showed the game, but I don't think MSG had Red Bulls coverage of it. Last year's NYCFC vs. Red Bulls MLS games were all on national TV. What channel(s) showed the games when Los Angeles Galaxy played Chivas USA?

OK, Kiddies, it's Quickie Prediction Time!

MLS team most like to fall to a lower-division opponent (14 in the series; collect them all).

I would go with NASL First-Half-Whatever-They-Call-That champion Indy Eleven over last-place-in-the-MLS Chicago Fire.

    Colorado Rapids 1:0 Colorado Springs
Real Salt Lake 2:2 Wilmington (Wilmington led 2:0, Real Salt Lake won penalty kicks 3:1)
    Portland 2:0 San Jose
Los Angeles 4:1 La Maquina (1:1 after regulation)

Kitsap Pumas is the last amateur side left, although if they lose tonight they should split the top amateur club prize money with La Maquina.
