A French team needs a good Europa League run to build that coefficient back up. P$G going deep is only going to do so much. It's tough, though, because the depth just isn't there for most teams to be able to compete on as many fronts as French teams have to compete on.
Nice should go far in the Europa they need to sign some players take this seriously.. they got the stade and fans
The thing is, you would expect the French teams to excel in the Europa League but that's not the case. This year alone 2/4 made it out of the groups but then their runs ended in the Round of 32. Monaco was a colossal disappointment and Bordeux didn't even bother to show up. The following year only one team made it out of groups(Guingamp of all teams) and proceeded to bow out in R32.
Marseille did the best they could despite struggling in the league. I don't think Bordeaux didn't bother to show up so much as they just weren't good enough to play in both the league and in Europe, but even in the Europa they earned 4 draws. In at least two of those games, they could've walked away with three points. Monaco just wanted to focus on the league and try to get back to the Champions League for 2016-17. St. Etienne could've gone far, but Basel was just a better team.
They dont have the owner. Saw a thread on one of their fansites about a Chinese buying the team. Very wealthy man.
The Chinese are apparently the new oil sheikhs. Every club in Europe is getting a new owner and they're all Chinese. Just like a few years ago when every middle eastern man with money was suddenly going to buy their club and turn it into the next Manchester City or PSG.
Disappointing to see Marseille with that payroll finishing that low in the standings. With that being said, 13th is flattering given how they performed up until the last few weeks of the season. That Angers win propelled them up the standings.
they were 13th (a fitting position in more than one way) for weeks. the list shown is for total budget, not just payroll.
Not really. As close as round 34, they were 4 points from 18th. They were as much relegation contenders as any team in the bottom third of that table. They got a lot of help from Reims, Toulouse, and Ajaccio, but if any of those teams went on a run, it would've been closer than that.
A Chinese just bought Aston Villa. Come on now, if youre an investor where would you rather invest ? Birmingham, Eng or Nice, Fr. I hope they stay in D2 forever.
If I were a Chinese billionaire, I wouldn't be wasting my money on a soccer team unless I was trying to launder it or use it to make money fixing matches. To answer your original question, the choice is easy. You go to Nice every freaking time.
Yeah, Lens, Marseille, and Nice are all struggling to get sold even though they are great cities/areas, meanwhile ANY English team gets scooped up in a heartbeat.
They arent related. With Lens, Gervais Martel refuses to lose control which complicates things. Hes looking for a 'stooge' that will keep him around. Nice owner had an offer from Saudi Arabia but turned it down. Marseille, takes a long time because of politics.
That all comes down to money. Being in England, if you're in the top flight, you're making money hand over fist, even if you finish 17th every year. In France, that just doesn't happen, so it's harder to find investors. Also, with PSG being overly dominant, it makes other investors not as interested to buy in because the opportunity to win isn't really there, and if you're not going to finish in the Champions League places year after year, you're going to hemorrhage cash, and most rich people aren't interested in that unless they can really win, or have a chance to win, year after year.
this season for me was boring ... other clubs need to step it up . the quality and competition was not good imo compared to the previous season
huh? take out PSG and it was the closest competition in europe right down to the last day at both top and bottom of the table. you can say it's not the best league but you can't say it wasn't an exciting season.
It was incredibly entertaining. The tremendous season Angers and Caen had, even though they were both expected to fight for relegation. Marseille's struggles. Nice finishing top 4. The battle for second place. There was so much more than just PSG blowing everyone out of the water. Ligue 1 was incredibly unpredictable this year, and that alone made it so much fun.
