So does the team sell beer and let you take it to your seat?

Yes, they even have people walking around selling beer to you so you don't have to get out of your seat.

I had heard about the bar at Notre Dame but I had moved away from the Indiana/Michigan area before that got going so I don't know as much about it. I wasn't sure it was on campus. I guess it is.

I had no idea that IUPUI had one.

@DanGerman You wouldn't want the government controlling the sale of liquor if they charge us 2-3 times the price as they do compared to even NY state. The have a monopoly; the first point of sale for all alcohol in the province here, they set the prices and have no competition.

@ everyone else I get that selling beer won't magically bring attendance up through the roof. I'm just amazed when I here how much of an issue it is at some places. It just seems so backward/unnecessary especially if it serves to no one's benefit. I guess it's fair to say its just a mess down there where it is and it's not where it's not. Go figure!

My apologies to sort of derail this thread over the oddities of liquor law in the states. We got attendance numbers coming up soon...

Well it is in the University Hotel, and I think it is more of a bar section of the restaurant at the Hotel. Most people wouldn't even know it was there to be honest.

Sorry to be a noodge. But can any of the knowledgeable people here fill me in on the efforts -- or lack of efforts -- on the Cosmos' part to get in at a college within the City before settling on Hofstra?

If they play at Hofstra, then fine if they can make that work. I just wonder why they can't get the Field Hockey/Lacrosse markings off the field? OKC paid almost $800K to buy their field so that they wouldn't have football markings, a red end zone, and a Big "Y" in the middle of the field. It just detracts from the image when I see one of their games and the most prominent thing I notice is the word "HOFSTRA" on the field itself.

Right, that is a very bad look. While I don't expect the team to buy the field from the college, why they cannot use paint to cover up the lacrosse markings and the "Hofstra" wordmark is difficult to understand.

And, to be honest, my imagined tenancy at Columbia's Baker Field would present same problem of field markings, as nothing could be done about the American football grid there.

Oh, i don't know, maybe Hofstra isn't too keen on having their logo and markings for their collegiate athletics constantly painted over and covered up.

Hofstra was always planned to be a short term solution. It was available, at the time they were willing to work with the Cosmos, the Cosmos had history playing there. As of now, i am told they are looking for other alternatives, but there just really isn't much in the NYC region that is suitable for a pro soccer team.

The paint would be removed after each of the Cosmos' matches. So please pardon me for not seeing what the college's objections would be to this.

This was what OKC was faced with as well, painting and re-painting the HS field multiple times per year. Plus, there's a track around it, so they would also be forced to play on a narrow pitch.
Solution? Nexxfield. It's the surface that Montreal Impact use, apparently. It is laid ON TOP OF the existing football field. AND, it lays on several lanes of the track, giving us a reg-sized pitch that can be taken up, and put down, as needed. AND, when the team builds their own stadium they will take the field with them :)

Montreal uses that at Olympic Stadium, I guess. Stade Saputo, their normal home field, has grass.

So it isn't field turf, is it? You can't really take field turf up and down because of the rubber pellet in-fill. Interesting.

No, it's not field turf. It took 4 large semi trucks to bring it from Canada. The pieces are in large squares. I know that it's more technical than this, but it seems like their velcroed together? Anyway, that's the way it seems to me. Like I said, I know it's a lot more technical than that

I remember seeing that it doesn't use infill, so I had to look it up. It is, as manusooner says, basically non infilled turf tiles that are velcroed together.
    In case your interested:

Traditional carpet systems are based on manufacturing artificial surfaces in rolls that require special equipment for handling as well as glue and in-fill for installation. The X-GEN.Event breaks that tradition by using a modular system, which consists in manufacturing ready-to-assemble panels (1.2 X 2.3 meters) that easily fit together thanks to overlapping fastener linings.

This major innovation, along with the lightweight materials used, allows for easier transportation and installation, as well as more flexibility for converting the playing area into usable space for special events. As a matter of fact, a team of ten workers can install or remove an entire field in about 24 hours. The same panels can be used both indoors and outdoors, providing even more adaptability and potential cost savings. The panel system is also efficient for drainage, ensuring that the surface remains playable in any weather.

Another benefit of the modular design is to provide much more maintenance flexibility than carpet-like surfaces. For example, panels can easily be rotated annually or semi-annually to ensure a regular wear rate across the field. If part of the surface becomes damaged for any reason, an individual panel can simply be removed, repaired and replaced.

Depending on the budget and the needs, the Event is available in its original version designed for maximum playability and heavy use or in the Event Sport version with shorter pile height and a softer shock pad for lighter uses.
