Fairly predictable. If someone comes to you and asks you if you're happy with your salary, are you ever going to turn down the chance to say no, I'd like more, please? And some of the comments are pretty ill-informed. I get the feeling your average BigSoccer poster knows more about international salaries and finances than a lot of players.
what we learned most of all is that MLS refs have a wide range of abilities and are throwing around red cards and PKs like they are being paid a bonus when they do- they continue to be a concern and a source of controversy in most games, with mark geiger leading the way- he gave my team, vancouver, 2 spotty PKs and then dismissed a PK for seattle with an obvious handball inside the box and he was only a few yards from the incident someone has stated that the refs are being assigned by the us soccer federation, but MLS has to step up to the plate and demand better refs, even if it takes more money to attract them from other leagues
Geiger is horrible. If an MLS player made half as many crucial mistakes as he has in the last 12 months, he'd no longer have a job. I don't bother going over to the Refs forum any more, since those guys are nothing but apologist for every ref, every instance. But really, how much is enough? What does it take for refs who are consistently inconsistent to stop getting assignments?
I don't know, I'd say everyone is equally ill-informed. The difference is that BS posters have more free time to speculate.
With Howard's Move to MLS, it's Just More of the Same The Sports Post Here's how a Columbus Crew SC fan saved someone on a flight from Portland MLSsoccer OFFSIDE REMARKS No more halfway measures on international playing dates for MLS Big Apple Soccer
Only the first PK awarded by Geiger was spotty. Second one is always a PK. Do you have an approximate time for the handball? Which red card did you have a problem with this week? Here are the players who received red cards: Kyle Beckerman Simon Dawkins Jamison Olave Roger Espinoza Players who committed fouls for PKs this week: Jones trip Marshall tackle Farrell tackle Goncalves holding Bernardez tackle Olave violent conduct Honestly, the only one in that list of 10 incidents that is problematic to me is the Joevin Jones trip / Bolanos stumble. All the rest seem like good calls.
So turf fields + single entity + single table combined for 12% of the responses yet take up 50% of the inane threads at BigSoccer. People could learn something from that. (Including some of the players based on the comments)
Mix was voted most overrated and just ahead of Jozy while Dax and Nagbe get most underrated. http://www.espnfc.com/major-league-...erud-most-overrated-mls-player-in-player-poll
I thought the red cards were totally justified, and you can add Je-Vaughn Watson to that list, as well. Frankly, I'm glad to see them because that's one way the level of play is going to improve in this league. What wasn't justified was Ismail Elfath constantly seeking personal confrontation with the players in LA-SJ, rather than seeking to alleviate it. He got up in Wondo's face one time after Chris had competely pulled out of a challenge and did nothing to Rowe whatsoever, and yet there was Elfath overreacting in pantomime because it's evidently got to be all about him. Mistakes get made by all officials, but there was no justification for Elfath's ongoing behavior the other night.
There's something funny about those answers. I think most knowledgeable MLS fans rate Dax and Nagbe. Similarly, Mix and Jozy get their share of criticism on these boards. So the question might be, overrated and underrated by whom? My guess is the players answering that question have one of two parties in mind: Klinsmann, or the media (or both).
And I'm sorry, but this is just so much hogwash: What the players said: "Whether you're playing for promotion or to avoid relegation, it makes every game that much more important. In MLS, if you're having a bad season, some guys just ride out the last couple months because they know they'll be in the league next year." "It would bring more pressure. You wouldn't have teams waiting to tee it up three games before the playoffs and then start to kick ass." Maybe I'm just naive, but I just don't see players walking into a packed stadium and simply "riding it out" because there's no pro/rel. EDIT: OK. I suppose there's always some, but no more than players (in leagues with pro/rel) whose teams have nothing left to play for: they're not going to win the title, and they're out of the relegation zone.
The question was, "What's the ONE thing you'd change?" Obviously for a player, you are going to say more money or more freedom are the most important. That doesn't mean the other things aren't issues for players. Your comment would be valid if they could have named multiple things, but they could only choose one.
No, its still a valid comment considering there are a number of posters who are convinced the greatest evil in the league is single entity (or turf fields). Looks like the players, not surprisingly, have greater concerns.
Let me know when you find a group of employees who's biggest collective concern is not their salaries.
Uh, 'nuance'? You can still be concerned with something even if it's not your greatest concern. Besides, the posters you mention are outliers. I wouldn't try to prove your point with them.
I also think it's a little strange to make that claim when a lot of teams don't really get eliminated until right near the end of the season and we've had multiple seasons where teams have missed out on the playoffs due to goal differential.
From the article I think it is more that a player making 100k doesn't think MB is worth over 6 mil. plus there is this ...
There is another way to solve that problem. No guaranteed contracts for anyone. Even with relegation a player has a guaranteed contract in England. Maybe they take a pay cut, but unless they are in a contract year they still get paid the next year. You can't ride out the year if your contract can be terminated at the end of the year. Of course every CBA the fight has been for more guaranteed contracts because employees want money and stability (which owners like as well and pro/rel certainly doesn't promote stability for an owner).
Somewhere Teddy Westervelt is crying because eliminate single entity/ institute pro-rel got a combined 7%....
