So I have seen tons of opinions on here on who is the best central defender in the world. Godin, Mascherano, Pique, Ramos, Varane, Hummels, Boateng, Chiellini, T. Silva, Bonucci, Barzagli, and Kompany have all really been considered really good and one of these are always rated the best. Who do you think is the best? Also rate them. And why do you think they are the best?

For me I'd have to say Barzagli. All of these defenders listed are great, but this season Barzagli has just been very consistent and I have seen amazing tackles and clearances he has made particularly in the past. Also really good in the air as well. He rarely loses focus, and I don't even remember ever seeing any other player from the opponent side behind Barzagli on the field while not having the ball.

Here is how I would rate them:

    1. Barzagli
    2. Pique
    3. Chiellini
    4. Godin
    5. Boateng
    6. Mascherano
    7. Bonucci
    8. Ramos
    9. Hummels
    10. T. Silva
    11. Kompany
    12. Varane

Not sure who the best overall is, but the best ball-playing center back is definitely Mats Hummels.

In my opinion Boateng is and has been for the past 2 years.

    1. Boateng.
    2. Pique
    3. Godin
    4. Ramos
    5. Silva

Well, Hummels it's a has-been, sort of... So, I'll leave him aside for now.

My favorites from your list are Thiago Silva, and Varane (in this order), although I could add S. Ramos in, as well, even if I don't like the guy. I don't like him as a human I mean, cause as a player he is good indeed.

Also, I would have preferred to see in your list other good CBs like John Terry for example, or even... Benatia. Yeah, I know Benatia is somehow new of a player and hasn't conquered the hearts and minds of many, but I'm telling you... give him 2-3 more years and he'll be arguably the best CBs in the world. OK, maybe the best CB is too much, but he'll in the first 3 in the world IMO ... assuming Anceloti will play him, or play him properly :)

And there might be other good CBs that could make it on to your list, but I can't think of any right now, and I'm too lazy to google :)

Boateng has impressed me as well. He can defend from anywhere pretty much.

Who says that Hummels is the best CB? Now, I'm not saying he's a bad player (I actually like Mats), but what source mentions the top CBs in the world?

Boateng can be really good sometimes, I have seen him. Don't forget Silva plays in a rubbish league that is all about PSG only.

I'm not saying he's the best CB and I don't believe he is, but I was just stating that in my (biased) opinion, that he is the best ball-playing CB.

yes, he plays in a rubbish league, but I've watched him play for AC Milan, and I've watched him play for Brazil, and I can count his mistakes on one hand in all those matches. I don't know but for me he is the best CB in the world
