Is Bimbo really that niche? It's in most convenient stores and grocery stores.

I was quirked by Bimbo once, but I got over it about 4.5 years ago.

The only person who knew of it (in my personal experience) was one of my high school lunch ladies. We had a nice conversation about how big the company was and laughed at how many other people were unaware of it.

I still do not see Bimbo branded breads in the stores of my part of Bucks Co. I do, however, see the various products branded under other names that they own all the time (but, I'm not sure how many people actually bother to read the fine print stating Bimbo as the owning corp).

Wawa isn't a national brand. There is little point in Wawa putting it's name on a soccer team's jersey because when they play out in Colorado or Los Angeles the crowds there will go, "Huh? What the hell is a Wawa?"

Everyone knows Wawa is the sound a baby makes when it cries. No wonder all those people going wawa wawa wawa about Bimbo being the sponsor.

While I know that alcohol plays a huge part in the ramblings of people on Matchday, but I've heard my fair share of the Bimbo hatred centering around the Country that the Company is from, etc. I'm sure you can pull out of that all you need to know about it.

After hearing enough disgusting insults flung in that fashion, I often wonder if some people use the "Bimbo vs. Beembo" crusade as a way to hide a different reason for disliking the sponsor.

That's why. They want it to become a household name like those things already are.

But the name is still "Bimbo"! It will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER be an accepted "household" name in America. Sorry but in English it is considered an insulting slang word. It's like saying "hey I'm going to go buy some of that Floozy Bread because that sounds delicious!" I could care less where the company is from but at some point you have to know your market and if your company is a slang word in the predominate language of the market that you want to expand your business in then maybe, just maybe you should use another name for that market. "Bimbo Bakeries" a multi-national company, but their U.S. subsidiary is known as "Wholesome Bread, Inc."....done, how hard is that?

I exclusively buy Bimbo bread, although it may have something to do with the blue coupons for free loaves that they give out on the Plaza before games. Haven't paid for a loaf of bread in several years. . .

I agree but I have had some interactions with them on a business level and I can tell you there is a lot of pride in the bimbo brand. Anyway they are the largest bakery in the US and so far have been willing to give us a lot of money despite the sh!t show the U have been. Imagine what they might do if we got it together. From my perspective they can put dickbutt on our jerseys as long as the checks don't bounce :)

When will our team realize that an insulting slang word against our womenfolk is plain wrong!!?!?! Why can't they adopt the European model of online bookies, alcohol and oppressive Middle Eastern regimes?!?! Down with Floozy Bread!! #pro/relKitSponsorsNOW

Your probably right but if I think about it I haven't heard someone actually use the term bimbo since the 80's. Maybe its the decline of western civilization but 'Ho' and 'Slut' have certainly taken over its spot in the current zeitgeist. Maybe in a generation or two no one will even remember its impolite connotation.

I'd believe that if they were actually trying to become a household brand. I never see a commercial outside of Union games. I never see their product unless I have a blue, shiny coupon in hand and I seek out the tiny little Bimbo alcove at the Korean grocer down the street. And to this day, 5 years later, I still have to explain what Bimbo is to random people on the street. Not that I mind at all, again, like I said, I've grown to like the Bimbo sponsorship. But if that's their goal, they are doing a crappy job of it.

I'm thinking that one of the ways that President Trump is going to "Make America Great Again" is to bring us back to the time when "bimbos" were "attractive empty-headed young women" and not bread. (No worse than some of his other plans, right?)

I mean, being called a bimbo is sort of a compliment. Its better than being dim AND ugly.

Bimbo is HUGE in the Latino community, which will be pushing 30% in this country in not a very long time. If you're sitting there wondering why it's not Entenmann's or Sara Lee, it's because you're not in the demographic that Bimbo plays to. As a long term strategy, they probably want to grow their brand among white people and MLS is a good place to do that. The sponsorship is about expanding their brand power to a different demographic in the long term, not really about selling bread in the short term.

Yeah, I mean, I know I now associate Bimbo with the bread first before the slang term... I'd imagine most people around me who are familiar with my Union fandom are now educated on that too... so to some degree if that was their objective it's probably working. Awareness of Bimbo branding is most likely higher than it was a few years ago thanks to the sponsorship.... soooo, success?

In my experience not just huge but also a very sentimental brand. Like immed start reminiscing about their youth. I know several people who are now fans because that sponsorship got them over the "MLS is just a crappy little sub par league" bias.

+ Thinking back I think the controversy over the name got a lot a national press so definitely. And it does cause a conversation when people who don't know the deal see it vs just 'oh look stroehmanns or whatever. Marketing people love that kind of stuff.

Definitely sentimental. First game we went to together my fiancé was like "Bimbo???? I grew up eating their snacks!"

Yeah, but they had 10 billion in revenue last year. That's a lot of hoagiefests.
