Not sure that is so "alarming". I mean "back in the day" there were few alternatives and lots of children were pigeonholed into a youth sports program, who with other options available, might not have gotten involved in team sports in the first place. Also the baby boom is over so the number of children available is also a bit skewed (I'm guessing since I'm just too lazy to do the math). I'd say this is more of a "leveling out" of previously over inflated numbers.
Apparently we've progressed enough to the point where pretty much everybody trying to get a transfer in Europe mentions MLS. I think that's a good thing, but I'll get back to you on that...
It's a good thing. in the past agents did this and they were not taken seriously, unless that player was looking for retirement and a last payday, lr had given up on international/top level football. It's early days yet but that tone is changing a bit.

A non-team sport, golf, is dropping off in participation for younger people as well. I would also chalk it up to the inventions and practicing of hybrid sports (free-running, cross-fit games, American Ninja Warrior obstacle challenges). In the article there was a comment about using health savings. Perhaps, schools should start re-establishing things like recess/phys ed for health before going this route.

Back in the day, kids went out and played pick up games with neighborhood kids of whatever sport captured their fancy on a given day. It's exceedingly sad, if not "alarming," to me that kids today seemingly have all their athletic time structured, chaperoned and in many cases directed to a single sport. In my view, unstructured play, without hovering parents or coaches, is essential for childhood development. It certainly was in my case.

In 1999 we bought a house in a development which featured a 12 acre "green space" (which, it turned out, was in a flood plain so they couldn't build there anyway, although it seldom got very wet). Anyway, there was a baseball diamond with a backstop and bases, a soccer field with permanent goals (they had nets if you could track down the guy with the keys but nobody did much) and a basketball court. We lived literally across the street from it and in almost 12 years we saw the diamond used once, the basketball half a dozen times maybe and the soccer never aside from me and my sons. But every evening, year round, the minivans would cruise out of there to this practice or that. Sad.
I think the terms "Big 4 leagues" and "Big 4 sports" get conflated way too often. The NHL is still clearly ahead of MLS as the #4 league, but is ice hockey really that far ahead of soccer as the #4 sport if at all? From a revenue-per-club standpoint, it looks like MLS will have to become a Top 3-4 soccer league before it can become a Top 3-4 US/Canadian league, so the two goals have a degree of overlap. That's why I don't see the NHL as competition as much as I see Serie A or Ligue 1 as competition. One .... Someone needs to sticky that Forbes article and post it for the clowms who know better and who infest these boards with their genius. As I have stated many times, in the business world MLS and DG are highly respected for what they have done. It is still a very worthy bet and investment with a real nice upside. Two ... I have always felt the same way when perusing the genral data. Specifically that Serie A and La Liga are the targets. The superclubs are who they are. The EPL is a monster. The BLiga is fiscally sound and well run. However, the bottom 3/4's or so of Serie A and LLiga are there to be taken....and thus the talent they can employee becomes fair game. A lot of quality there. I truly believe the statement about players who now have accessa around the globe being surprised at the level of play. Have heard it with my own ears from folks who dissmissed MLS with every usual stereotype, to having watched matches throughout this year and coming away impressed. While surprised with the play they are more surprised by the crowds, their passion and the general atmospheres. That has caught most completely off guard. There is recognition that all the talk they have heard for decades of the US being a big soccer market someday.....blah, blah, blah, sure it is......is not just talk anymore. It can happen, and it isn't a fantasy. As always, these folks show more respect for MLS, and want to learn more about our set up and why we do things like we do, then most casual idiot poser US fans. That is always the saddest part for me.

well put. it's gonna sneak up on people when it happens...but I think it's a lot closer to reality than many realize. I think many underestimate the desire players have to live in the us and that they would pick the us if the salaries were the same. the value of that worldwide tv exposure is immeasurable and whatever actual money they get out of it (for now) pales in comparison to having every football fan worldwide basically being able to watch mls. that's huge. maybe the biggest development in the history of the league as far as challenging the top leagues.
