Actually, two second-round winners advance to the tournament proper, and 12 teams play the third round, April 2-3.

Isn't a forfeit score supposed to be 3-0?

I thought so but the USSF lists it as 1-0.

Apparently the score of a forfeit is determined by the sanctioning organization of the tournament or league. There is no specific score listed for forfeits in the Laws.

The U.S. Open Cup rules talk about forfeits but do not mention a specific score. In a knockout tournament where the score of a game has no influence over anything, 1-0 works just as well as 3-0.

Yup; we're losing more and more of these puppies. (Are you sure it was "Cosmos B" that made the decision, or was it made for them?)

After everyone lauded the introduction of the MLS-run USL teams, and then NASL-run NPSL teams, the "market correction" occurs after the warts of constant expansion occur in the real world.

I also think that USSF doesn't want to deal with the messiness of charging MLS / NASL teams with interference in the workings of teams, and just tossing individual (parent) clubs out of the tournament for a few years. A blanket exclusion of "parent-owned" teams seems like a solution that satisfies no fan base.

And just to ask.... isn't it interesting that the two cases sited (Red Bulls II / 2 / B, and now Cosmos II / 2 / B) are both New York teams? As someone who is on a kick of protecting Midwest participation in the tourney, are we just going to let NY dictate tournament policy? http://thecup.us/2015/11/04/mls-own...d-in-2016-us-open-cup-per-ussf-policy-change/

Stover, he expanded on the timing of his tweet.
“We made the decision not to put our B team in the Open Cup before the new rule was announced. We just spoke about it publicly for the first time today because there was some discussion resulting from US Soccer’s announcement today,” said Stover. “Regardless, US Soccer’s intent is clear and we completely agree with their point of view. We also think that the federation will close that loophole (of having the same club entering multiple teams) in the future.”
    He continued:
“It’s a pretty simple decision for us because it’s kind of ridiculous to have two teams in the same tournament,” added Stover. “The most basic issue is that we could conceivably end up playing ourselves which is not good from anyone’s point of view. Plus, we’ve been faced with the possibility of playing other teams’ reserve teams over the past two years and it wasn’t hard for us to imagine potential conflicts. I’m not saying anything questionable ever happened or would happen in the future, but your imagination can run a bit wild when thinking about these things. So, we decided last year that we didn’t want to force other clubs and the federation into discussing the integrity of the tournament for matches that Cosmos B played.”

    SECOND ROUND

International Portland Select (OR) 0-1 (forfeit) NTX Rayados

    Saturday, November 14
Worcester FC (MA) 0-5 Lansdowne Bhoys FC (NY)
Pancyprian Freedom (NY) 2-1 Jersey Shore Boca (NJ)

    Sunday, November 15
Southie FC (MA) 4-0 GPS Omens (MA)
West Chester United (PA) 3-0 Salone FC (PA)
Aromas Cafe FC (VA) 3-1 Aegean Hawks FC (MD)

    Saturday, November 21
San Francisco City FC (CA) v. Davis Legacy (CA) 4:00 pm
Uruguay Kendall FC (FL) v. Boca Raton FC (FL) 6:00 pm
CD Motagua (LA) v. Queen City United (NC) 8:00 pm

LA Wolves FC (CA) v. Cal FC (CA) 10:30 pm
Chula Vista (CA) v. La Maquina (CA) 11:00 pm

    Sunday, November 22
Harpo's FC (CO) v. Colorado Rush (CO) 12:00 pm
Real Sociedad (CA) v. San Nicholas FC (CA) 7:30 pm

12 of the 2nd round winners advance to the 3rd round April 1-2, 2016. Two winners, based on geographic isolation, advance directly to the Open Cup.

It is going to be interesting to see who gets the bye straight into the Open Cup. It may come down to who wins the Motagua/Queen City game. If that is Motagua maybe they get matched up with NTX and the Miami area winner gets matched up with Aromas leaving the byes out West for the Northern California winner and the Colorado winner.

If Queen City wins maybe they get matched up with Aromas, NTX gets matched with the Colorado winner leaving the byes for Miami and Northern California. Or the Northern California winner gets matched up with the Colorado winner leaving byes for NTX and the Miami area winner.

The distances are pretty close between a lot of these.

Forget that waiting on the USSF, what are your guesses for the 3rd round?

The Northeast and Southern California groups seem pretty obvious.

    Northeast
    Southie FC (MA)
    Lansdowne Bhoys FC (NY)
    Pancyprian Freedom (NY)
    West Chester United (PA)

    Southern California
    Outbreak FC (CA)
    San Nicholas FC (CA)
    La Maquina (CA)
    LA Wolves FC (CA)

If you go strictly by the teams the farthest away from another team then SFCFC and Aromas should get the byes.

    San Francisco City FC (CA)
    Aromas Cafe FC (VA)

    Which leaves:

    Central
    Harpo's FC (CO)
    NTX Rayados (TX)

    Southeast
    CD Motagua (LA)
    Boca Raton FC (FL)

Unless the goal is to reduce total travel, then you give the byes to SFCFC and Harpos:

    San Francisco City FC (CA)
    Harpo's FC (CO)

    Which leaves:

    South
    NTX Rayados (TX)
    CD Motagua (LA)

    Southeast
    Boca Raton FC (FL)
    Aromas Cafe FC (VA)

Even though that is a longer trip for Aromas it reduces the total travel a little bit.

Not likely. If their league begins to meet the minimum standards by then (number of teams, number of league games etc.) then they will have to enter the Open division qualifying tournament just like everyone else in the USASA, US Club Soccer & USSSA.

The other thread started today got me to thinking. Why doesn't the USSF just let all 14 of the remaining amateur teams into the Open Cup proper?

That would make 42 amateur teams.

    Round 1: 42 amateur teams, 21 games
Round 2: 21 winners plus 17 USL teams, 19 games
Round 3: 19 winners plus 11 NASL teams, 15 games
Round 4: 15 winners plus 17 MLS teams, 16 games

I think that is correct for the number of pro teams that we will have next year. Eliminating six of the amateur teams in January just makes things more complicated.

With San Antonio joining USL we now have these numbers for 2016:

    USL - 18 teams
    NASL - 10 teams
    MLS 17 teams

If the Scorpions actually move to Las Vegas that NASL number could go back up.

    THIRD ROUND

Byes directly into the U.S. Open Cup:

    Harpo's FC (CO)
    San Francisco City FC (CA)

The winners of these matches advance to the Open Cup:

    Saturday, April 2
West Chester United (PA) v. Southie FC (MA) 5:00 pm
Lansdowne Bhoys FC (NY) v. NY Pancyprian Freedoms (NY) 7:00 pm
CD Motagua (LA) v. NTX Rayados 7:00 pm
La Maquina (CA) v. Outbreak FC (CA) 8:00 pm
LA Wolves (CA) v. San Nicholas FC (CA) 9:30 pm

    Sunday, April 3
Aromas Cafe FC (VA) v. Boca Raton (FL) 3:00 pm

It looks like the tournament will start on May 11 this year.

USSF article on the quailifying: http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...-open-cup-third-qualifying-round-pairings-set

USSF article on professional teams owned by a higher-level professional team: http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...eligibility-policy-for-lamar-hunt-us-open-cup
Quote: The updated policy now states that
"any Outdoor Professional League Team that is majority owned by a higher-level Outdoor Professional League Team
    -or-
any team that is (1) majority owned by an Outdoor Professional League Team, (2) registered with any Open Division League, and (3) registered as a professional team,
will not be able to take part in the Open Cup."
I split the two main clauses apart. The second clause of the "or" would apply to a professional team in the PDL, NPSL, or such.

So it looks like (?): MLS (17), NASL (9), USL (19), PDL (15), NPSL (12 or 13), Open (8); I'm not counting Puerto Rico, yet.

Which gives these two possible calculations:

    roundnewinfocarry overmatches
    126of 36 amateur13
    229USL (19), amateur (10)1321
    39NASL (9)2115
    417MLS (17)1516
    81total

    roundnewinfocarry overmatches
    124of 35 amateur12
    230USL (19), amateur (11)1221
    39NASL (9)2115
    417MLS (17)1516
