Can we correct the spelling on this thread title @bungadiri? Change "Huerzeler" to "Hürzeler"?

Actually, "Huerzeler" is preferred (and a correct German to English translation) for searching purposes. Most of us don't use umlauts in the BigSoccer search box and "ü" doesn't equal "u" when you use the search function.

    Hmm. Makes sense to me.

Edit: So, I punted and put them both in there.

In fact ue is the adequate way of writing in case an umlaut is not available like in the early age of computer generated content:

I picked that up working for SAP in the '90s. Solved a lot of problems figuring out the email addresses of my German colleagues.

    Well, it's been less than a year since @keller4president advocated a call-up.

Ha, okay, well I finally capitulate here. The kid clearly has no future with the US National Team. But I still think he could be useful for an MLS team ;).

According to Transfermarkt, Huerzeler is now manager of Pipinsried and is also in the playing squad. Which is a little surreal -- looking at the roster on Transfermarkt, two-thirds of the players he's coaching are older than him.

It's only a matter of time before @keller4president starts lobbying for him to replace Klinsmann as player/coach of the national team, or as player/coach of one of the upcoming MLS expansion clubs or MLS vacancies.

Fabian for US manager! Actually, he'd be more appropriate to coach at an MLS youth academy, given the amount of time he's spent on youth teams.

Love the idea of player-manager. Club gets a two-for-one bargain. Player gets to call his own number every once in a while and experience first hand how his tactics are working. An interesting dynamic. They should try to work this into the Football Manager game.

I'm pretty sure most youth players spend most of their youth on youth teams. ;)

Fabian has started every match for Pipinsried this season, and coached the team as well. It looks like he has led them to 3rd place in Bayernliga Sud and a playoff with SpVgg Greuther Furth II for promotion to Regionalliga Bayern. Today, Pipinsried drew 1-1 in the first leg, notching an important away goal. Looks like the next match is Monday.

Amazingly, his U.S. Soccer profile is still up: http://www.ussoccer.com/players/2014/03/15/05/11/fabian-hurzeler#tab-1

Recently, Fabian also expressed his disappointment with former club 1860 Munich II's forced relegation to the 5th tier, despite finishing second in their Regionalliga division, due to the first team's relegation to 3. Liga (the rules say that the senior and reserve club have to be at least two levels apart), and the effect it had on preparation for Pipinsried's promotion playoff. He sounds like a dedicated player-coach.

    Snip (translated):
Fabian Hürzeler also suffered on Tuesday night with the TSV 1860 Munich. For two years, from 2014 to 2016, today's Pipinsrieder was a player for the second lion team. "This is why I am hurting most now for my guys, who have to descend as a tabular player after a great season in the regional league," he says. The fact that many jobs in the club and the future of many young talents were so easily lost by the second team was "dramatic", according to Hürzeler.

Not so dramatic, but also not insignificant, are the consequences of the lion's catastrophe for Hürzeler's own team. By the forced departure of the Munich U 21 into the Bayernliga all other teams in the regional league Bayern slide automatically one place upwards. While SV Schalding-Heining, the real opponent of the pipeline, is rejoiced at the relegation of the club, SV Seligenporten is still in the relegation (against Viktoria Aschaffenburg), the opponent of Hürzeler's team is SpVgg Greuther Fürth II.

"This is a pity," says Hürzeler. "We had prepared for Schalding-Heining, even made video analyzes and would have liked to play against them." It would not have been possible to adjust to Furth to the same extent. "In principle, however, it does not matter: we are the outsider, we have nothing to lose, and we want to try to be brave," says the 24-year-old, who would like to play "zero" tonight.

Fürth is being trained for the first time by Timo Rost. The 38-year-old ex-Bundesliga (Energie Cottbus, VfB Stuttgart, 1. FC Nürnberg) took over the position of Interimstrainer Christian Benbennek directly before the relegation and is to keep the talent for the Franks in the regional league. "Similar to Sixty, it is also about the existence of their junior team," says Hürzeler. "For many players, the way to the professional team depends on it, which means: Fürth must hold the league, but we do not have to rise." In addition, there is another chance for the regional league in the loser duel of the two relegation couples. "But what should we be afraid of, why should not we already make it against Fürth," Hürzeler asks.

That's wrong, although an annoyingly often made mistake. The rule is that 3. Liga clubs can not have a reserve side in the Regionalliga. There's no other situation where such a restriction exists. E.g. in the (not that unlikely) case that 1860 will not get a 3. Liga license and will play in the Regionalliga instead next season, then their reserve side can still play Oberliga.

and now 2 years later, he lead them as player-coach back to OL and relegation as the worst team in RL Bayern.

not mentioned fact here, but not only is he a player coach, playing and coaching
Pipinsried. He's also the German U20 NT assistant coach, has been since last Summer. Although we are getting a new coach so who knows if he stays or not.

what the hell is he thinking doing 3 jobs at once?
