I've been watching some of Paulista at Arsenal and he has been a rock. Imo, it'd be best if we were to integrate him into the first team the way we've done with Marquinhos for 2018. But Gil will most definitely start .

He is what he is. He had very good moments (cleared several crosses in the first half) last night but they were overshadowed by his typical boneheaded decisions -- pushed forward and left Higuain free on the goal and the red card. I've always said he plays better paired with TS.

Yep, that's one of the reasons why I felt DL was caught out of position. FL was no where to be found on the goal and DL was anticipated something else in the area FL left open. 3 men could not stop Di Maria from creating space and finding Higuain free.

That's harsh on FL at least on that play. Our FBs get caught out of position when the midfield loses possession cheaply. In this case it was Lucas Lima who lost the ball with a very bad touch. We can't expect our FBs to support the attack aggressively and then be able to sprint back in time to prevent a quick counter. This happened on another play earlier in the game as well.

This is all on David Luiz. This was still a 3 on 6 situation and should have been contained. Di Maria is marked by 2-3 players and I bet DL is thinking of preventing a Di Maria run in case he dribbles past them instead of tracking Higuain. DL sees a player with ball and he sees red. He is always thinking he needs to step up and attack / anticipate their move instead of holding his position. If he does that, he needs to make sure there is a FB covering him.

EDIT: Actually DL is probably thinking Higuain will receive the pass in front of him so he is trying to anticipate that pass. Either way, he read that badly.

We just gained possession a second after LL lost the ball. You are telling me FL already bombed way forward?

No we didn't. LL loses the ball on a really bad trap and if he had done what he intended to do, FL was waiting for a pass on the sideline. Argentina goes straight up the field and scores. FL is actually level with Di Maria when he makes the pass.

I guess if he was RC he could have made it back in time.

Do you have the video of before when he loses the ball? I'm pretty sure Argentina has possession and we stole it and tried to counter in their half and lost it.

Anyways, FL is past Di Maria tracking back before Di Maria makes the pass. The ball actually goes by FL (had his back turned). He was going half speed. No way was he sprinting full speed to cover Higuain.

The play starts on the right. the play gets switched to the left and I see FL sprinting in the mid-left for a possible 1-2 play with Neymar. The pass from Luis Gustavo to Neymar is intercepted by an Argie but the ball goes out of bounds on the sideline. FL comes back and receives the throw-in with Neymar. The ball goes to LG and then to Lucas Lima who does a terrible trap losing possession. FL had gotten knocked down on the throw-in and no foul was called. But he was back up when LL loses the ball and is waiting for a pass from him.

He is not completely sprinting in that situation but that's normal. Because at that point, Higuain is DL's man, not his. And even if FL sprints back full speed he is not getting to him in time.

No way is Higuain DL's man with FL providing no cover. That's in his flank and DL was covering FL. FL needs to sprint back and cover the space that DL left. Because FL isn't anywhere around and DL pushed up, Miranda abandons his position to challenge Higuain before he makes the cross. You have to always maintain the integrity of the formation. There needs to be 2 lines of 4 and FL was in no man's land causally jogging. It's not normal.

FL was in between Higuain and Di Maria when the pass was made, not level.

Higuain runs straight across DL. DL can either put a body on him and make sure he doesn't get behind, or try to anticipate Di Maria's pass to Higuain in front of him and not behind. He chose the 2nd option. If he chooses the first option, Higuain gets the ball and still has to dribble DL and it gives FL more time to come back.

I've already said DL was the most to blame. I'm not defending him. My point is FL could have done more to get back. He's casually sprinting back when Di Maria still has the ball. And FL had his back turned to Di Maria, meaning he saw DL and Higuain.

That's fine. I don't think a FL sprint was going to make a difference given how things played out. That's a bit of ground to cover. He hesitated a bit when Di Maria cut and passed the ball. But other than that he was running. Either way, we all know Marcelo leaves the same spaces behind him. All our FBs tend to do so because they love to attack. If we need to maintain 2 lines of 4 as much as possible as you mentioned, then that's more of a coaching issue.

I agree about both LBs leaving space, but I rate Marcelo's attacking higher than FL's.

Coaching, well, you know how I feel about that issue....
