I'd feel like a person who took back their ex who wasn't loyal to them. At first you might be reminded of the reasons you got together in the first place. But ultimately you'd just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
This speaks to a lack of scouting. Penedo is not the only GK out there that would be a major step up. Besides, if LAG take him back, they are saying to all players "go ahead and screw the team mid-season if you feel like. You can always come back." And PLEASE don't give me any of that "everybody deserves a second chance" crap. Most people don't even deserve a first chance.
I wouldn’t necessarily read too much in to Penedo returning. The source article is basically Bruce saying “no hard feelings” and Penedo saying “I maybe was a little rash.” Jaime is probably just our backup plan if something better doesn’t come along. Bruce & Co., have a lot on their plate this offseason.
I would not want him back. Remember, he "held out" at the beginning of the season, got some concessions and a generous pay package, then tried to leverage a better deal mid-season. Whether it's him personally, or bad advice from an agent, I don't want that type of guy hanging around. We should be able to find a decent keeper (a superstar would be nice, but not necessary - we just need competence).
This is a good question. With how the roster is set up we need someone serviceable and not expensive but reliable and be counted on for the playoffs. It's a tricky roster spot
The reason some of us want Penedo is taht Bruce goes for known quantities or veterans and we're terrified we'll get saddled with Kennedy or the next Cudicini. At least we know we can live with Penedo's skill set. Also, most of us learned to spell his name eventually, so there's that.
On pure performance measures I would rate Penedo a B+. He is a very good shot stopper with quick reflexes but lacks size and is a very poor kicker. He is probably the 6th best to 8th best keeper in the league. His save % would rank him 5th this season but his lack of size and poor kicking game knocks him down a bit. I would definitely rate him below Frei, Hamid, Melia, and Ousted. Also maybe below Blake and Gonzalez but we don't have a lot of data on them. A well established know quantity top MLS keeper goes for around 250-350k. We probably can't afford that. So we have to either take Penedo back or discover a hidden gem. They exist - overseas (the way we found Penedo), in the drafts (Blake, superdraft), or lying around unrecognized (Melia, MLS keeper pool). But finding them takes either brilliant scouting or luck. Here's hoping.
It is tricky because Bruce has never really wanted to dedicate a huge portion of the cap towards a keeper. Outside of MLS, I have a feeling there isn't a keeper in Concacaf worth taking a chance on. However there's been a couple keepers from the Nordic leagues that have done well here in MLS (Steve Clark, Ousted, Kwarasey). Perhaps our good will with Ishizaki will payoff and he can put in a good word for our organization to an available keeper up there.
Yeah no kidding. This is the $20,000 question. I wish we knew just how much money the team is working with cap wise and what not.
I wonder what are the rankings and stats of the national team GK's for CONCACAF are currently and who is available among that group? I am going to see if I can find out.
Steven Gerrard in line for Liverpool return following discussions with Jürgen Klopp. Exclusively for @IndyFootball: https://t.co/pfItJRZf6O— Simon Hughes (@Simon_Hughes__) November 3, 2015 Caution: This might be just clickbait. I'm not sure the author fully knows what he's talking about. He could be exaggerating a standard training stint. Hopefully Klopp takes him off our hands though.
What I do take as a good sign is that there is at least a training session. There really isn't any reason for him to be training. He should be resting in the off-season before he starts to train with the Galaxy. But maybe if he spends some time in Liverpool he'll see whatever they like to eat there and it will make him nostalgic and want to stay.
Penedo has flaws, but he isn't a scrub. In fact, he's a fairly accomplished GK. Should've been in a GC Final; very narrowly missed out on the WC. And most importantly, we know we can win a Championship (and nearly a Supporter's Shield) with him in goal. I'd take him back for sure. I also don't hold it against him for holding out for a better deal. He was doing what he felt was best for himself and his family and surely Bruce did what he felt was best for the Galaxy. Doesn't seem to have panned out for either party, really.
Steven Gerrard return to Liverpool: LA Galaxy life has not been bed of roses for former Anfield captain The English press love them some Gerrard. I love it how they didn't really mention his struggles. This is as close as they got but still managed to blame the team. "On Monday, Gerrard convened with Bruce Arena, Galaxy’s coach, and the pair discussed the future over lunch: going over what had gone right for Gerrard and the team over the previous four months, what had gone wrong – and the numerous areas where the former Liverpool captain feels improvements are glaringly necessary."
What a steaming pile of coddling, hero-worshipping bullshit. The article moans about the travel, but Gerrard never traveled any further than Texas or Kansas City for a whopping total of eight away matches (at most, can't remember if he missed any) with the team since his first Galaxy match on July 11. Hell, I fly to Tokyo and back from NYC several times a year (in coach class) and don't even get jet lag, and I'm a good few years older than Gerrard. For me flying to the midwest is a cakewalk. It's certainly more relaxing than a morning commute by train to Manhattan or trying to make a 7PM dinner reservation when driving from Santa Monica to Hollywood during weekday rush hour. When did the British press become a bunch of whining, excuse-making pussies? This season alone I've heard them go on about about "sweltering heat" (70F degrees) and "monsoon-like conditions" (a trickle of rain that lasted 10 minutes) during Premier League broadcasts. Now humidity is to blame for Gerrard's poor form? Put on your flipping man pants. No one else complains about it.
Gerrard is much much closer to "Lothar Matthaus" territory than he is to "Robbie Keane" territory. He keeps up his approach to MLS and maybe next year he can contend for The Edilson Award.
Forgot to mention that Gerrard had no problem flying back to England to provide "insight" for Champions League broadcasts, but flying to San Jose and Salt Lake City is some sort of insurmountable challenge? Piss off back to Liverpool you Phil Collins-loving wimp.
I definitely understand and respect the desire to put your family's needs first, but that doesn't necessarily give you carte blanche. He renegotiated in February of this year and got a near 25% raise. To come back less than 6 months later and ask for more seems churlish. It's not like he was single handedly keeping LA in games, he was more or less performing at the level he had been in 2014.
I'm guessing he goes to Liverpool to train but I doubt he goes to play. Klopp has never been a fan of star players. He doesnt think they buy into his program. Plus we all know Gerrard cannot press.
