It was creative the first time. But now this is the 4th women's professional sports team (though only 3 are active) to bear that moniker. Heck, it won't even be the only pro sports team in the Orlando metro area with that name...
So, this was mentioned Friday and we missed it: Hearing the Orlando #NWSL expansion team could be announced on Tuesday. As always with pending announcements, that could change.— Jeff Kassouf (@JeffKassouf) October 16, 2015 Doesn't really make sense to me... Why not use the USWNT game as a megaphone for the announcement?
Well, you could still announce in the pregame ceremonies or halftime, then open the STP kiosk... Same thing with selling merch. All I can think of is that NWSL is maybe forcing the announcement so there's less background shuffling with waivers and trades and drafts. Though that would be suggesting that NWSL is actually putting effort into having more transparency! X-D
Orlando City just held their last home game of the season and their official average attendance for the year was 32,847. If the team is built and marketed to their current audience right, it's hard to see an NWSL team not average at least 7-8K a game - especially if they implement a Season Ticket Holder wait list incentive similar to Portland.
Miiiiight not have to wait that long; this tweet can't just be coincidentally lining up with Kassuof's, no.... Orlando City has a presser tomorrow at noon. Could be long-awaited NWSL announcement but it's at Lake Eola. Both mayors & "2 special guests"— The Mane Land (@TheManeLand) October 19, 2015
I'd image more like Plush and maybe a coach - though I could see Morgan or Harris being the second, too. But if it's an NWSL expansion announcement, an NWSL official should be there.
They won't be special guests though as they are kinda expected. But whatever, we are just parsing words now.
The "official" announcement.. of their announcement. Join us at noon tomorrow for a special announcement next to the amphitheater at Lake Eola! pic.twitter.com/SYo6YBaaUI— Orlando City SC (@OrlandoCitySC) October 19, 2015
Threes, huh? What do they have two of already that they need a third of? X-D =edit= It seems C.Murray found the new Twitter account @ORLPride and suggested that was for the new team, and now the account has over 130 followers despite no Tweets, no info, no header, and no avatar. X-D
It will be interesting to see what kind of advanced season ticket sales they can generate. Portland, in their 1st year, 7000+, while Houston's was around 3000. I think they will be somewhere between the two. Maybe 4ooo to 5000 would be supportive of 7000 to 8000K a game.
I agree. Right now Orlando City has already sold out their 18,000 season ticket holder allotment for the 2016 season and a wait list has already begun for 2017. With Orlando City's new stadium to officially open for the 2017 season, they are well positioned to use their NWSL team to entice those 18,000 season ticket holders to get "premium" seating in the new stadium, or move up in the men's teams wait list, if they also purchase an NWSL season ticket. I think that 4-5K figure is a very realistic goal should they have a benefit their current season ticket holders.
Orlando City will make a special announcement tomorrow regarding "Orlando City Pride" #NWSL 😼💜 #Lionssss pic.twitter.com/waknGEEUV3— #TeamHarris (@nutellAHarris24) October 19, 2015
I'm going to try and attend the announcement. I'm intrigued by the design, are there easter eggs hidden in the announcement? Does the Blue mean anything? Usually purple is in your face in, with stuff like this.
