    That was a neat move, though the deflection was a crucial contributor to the goal.

    Great showing by PJH. Surprised Koo didn't come on sooner

    Came on in the injury time.

    It hardly would have mattered. The coach should have replaced Muto with Niederlechner earlier on, but otherwise, Mainz was defending mostly.

    Park was solid as LB today. A lot of good tackles, kept gladbach in check. Bild rated him 3 today, which is decent.

    I meant Koo as defensive or 50/50 option

    I thought that's why Malli was replaced with Danny Latza, given that Latza is much more of a defensive player.

    In any case, a scruffy win, but still better than what happened vs Darmstadt.

    Honestly I find Mainz almost unbearable to watch this season so far. It's like something sucked out all their creativity this summer. Good performances individually at times, but as a team they are a negative mess atm. Unfortunately it seems Martin Schmidt actually wants this approach.

    Totally agree. I have no idea what Schmidt is doing after a decent spring. It looks like he's starting coaching this club for first time ever. Even ambiguity over PJH is just confounding.

    It would explain why PJH wasn't set in at LB but so late...

    PJH at BVB would be a bittersweet outcome. Clearly the better club in so many regards, but their squad depth for MF is ridiculous. And especially once the injured players come back playing time as LB isn't a given at all either (I'm not even sure I'd drop Schmelzer as is, he's playing his best in years atm).

    He'd only be a LB but certainly Kicker also thinks hed be coming in as a backup. I wonder how much the resolution to his option exercise might come into play (e.g. getting paid low amt as when he left Basel)

    I thought they would be looking for a right back given that all their natural RBs are injured. Has Park ever played on the right? I can't recall if he ever has.

    option for LB because of Durm's return from his injury being uncertain

    http://www.ruhrnachrichten.de/sport...blich-Mainzer-Park-im-Visier;art11635,2800017

    Schmelzer is in fantastic form right now but I believe PJH can compete with him. The problem.. of course is when Durm returns from his injury (of which, don't have a clue when that could be). Midfield is stacked (Gundogan, Bender, Weigel, Sahin, Castro) but it's Dortmund where injury issues are constant.

    I'm guessing he would be coming in as cover for LB and also MF in a pinch. But last time we were having this convo it was PCY going as cover for a chronically injured Van Persie. We all know how that turned out.

    I don't think it is just for cover. He will get his chance to compete for 1st team/starting minutes under Tuchel. Also, Durm can play RB as well... so, technically.. they are two deep in both full-back position when he returns.

    from one of bigger english Dortmund blogs which notes Tuchel was in Mainz recently.

    Anyway, the big question for me is why now. If Tuchel really wanted PJH, he should have moved earlier. This late, it feels only as depth and even though I think PJH can compete, he has to wonder what his role would be.

    Kinda random rumor but not totally inconceivable. Obviously Tuchel likes PJH and BVB could use another "real" fullback on their roster to avoid the patchwork of makeshift solutions i.e. last year.

    Left back
    • Schmelzer
    • (Durm) -> RB higher priority? PJH could fill this slot
    • Dudziak -> loan?
    Right back
    • Piszczek
    • Durm
    Utility dudes capable of filling in at both spots
    • Sokratis (CB)
    • Ginter (CB/DM)
    • Großkreutz -> exiled to BVB II / oblivion
    • Kirch/Castro/etc... -> emergencies

    what didn't happen. Got in a tiff with Tuchel. I think he got hurt at one point. I don't expect him to stay.
