Quiet the whole game and tried to turn it on in the final minutes. :ROFLMAO:

Would honestly have liked to see him more involved throughout the game.

Schoen was saying many people said Barca made a mistake by signing an old defender (Verm is 29). Hudson said "That's what you said as well". :ROFLMAO:

    Tough fixture, three great points!

Performance was from ok to good, though obviously at this part of the season, there is a lot of room for improvement. And it's good to get the clean sheets rolling again. Some players had mediocre nights, some good, but that's life. Good start to the season.

Valuable three points against a quality opponent in a tough venue.
    Great start to the season.

Game over. Good win. Offense struggled but defense was solid. Athletic barely had a sniff of the goal. Supercopa hangover ? :ROFLMAO:

3 important points considering the opposition in the first 3 games of the season. The injuries are a bummer though.

Well much as I'd like to be on for a record 2nd straight 6-tuple, this win was more important than the super copa and will go a long way.

Injuries are the bad news here. Faulty preseason with many hours on planes.

Well ... Alves didn't participate in the pre season and Busquets looked more like bad luck. Wouldn't blame pre season on this.

Lucho: "The injuries to Busquets and Alves do not appear to be serious. We will know more tomorrow when tests are done."

First time since 09/10 Messi doesn't score in the La Liga opener.

Alves apparently out at least a month; no word yet on Busquets.

Totally forgot about the game (for shame!), glad we won. So glad that Suarez is on this team.

Luckily there is NT break soon, so hopefully they won't miss too many games.

Important Busquets comes back fairly quick though, I don't trust Bartra playing in difficult games.

Verminator with a great performance, IMO he is far ahead of Bartra and Mathieu for that CB spot.

Very good win, considering the opponent and the venue, plus you add in the injuries to Alves (very early) and Busquets (uh oh). I thought that Verm had a MOTM performance in the second half. Masche held it together in the first half. Roberto really impressed me today, a little better passing and he could have found Messi at the end.

I think the defence looked much better than at any time in the pre-season/Spanish Super Copa matches. Great volley smashed in the net by Suarez, so wonderful to have him at the beginning of the season. Rafinha put in a good shift, but really he shouldn't be in the forward role. Either Munir or Sandro, until Neymar is ready. They were saying that he is training with the team.

@celito, yes the calling out of Phil by Ray Hudson, was funny. Bravo another clean sheet.

That was a very suspect penalty we were awarded, and a weak effort by Messi. However his little Messi spin-o-rama run was well worth the price of admission.

So just read this: In the history of the World Cup, teams have made 71.5 percent of their penalty-shootout kicks. But the sample size is not huge, and the percentage has been slightly higher — closer to 75 percent — in other major international tournaments like the European Championships.

Inspired by reading this: In total, he has scored 49 penalties for Barcelona, missing 14, for a success rate of 77.7 percent.

So if you are looking for one thing in which Messi is just slightly better than average, there you are, the rest 'impossible'.

He still misses too many penalties though no matter what the stats say.

What does that mean? That he should emphasize penalty taking more in his training programme, or that somebody else should take them?

I wish he'd score more of them, but I think the problem is overestimated.

Busquets is not injured but Alves out for a month.

    S. Roberto did well at RB position so if he can repeat the performance then it's a great shift in his career.

The positive from yesterday was S. Roberto at RB and Vermaelen

Sergio Craperto did well indeed, thank god for that but I still never wanna see him in midfield also before he can be pardoned for being below average he needs to fend off a few good players to the right. One game is just one game, consistency is another so let's see what he does during Alves one month on the sideline. Keeping fingers crossed.

About him in midfield: every team needs depth. He has a good attitude, is a Masia graduate, so I dunno if he needs to be pardoned of anything (that's just my opinion, though). It's not like he forced himself to be part of the team, more like the bosses decided that the team is better with him than without him.

Agreed that one match is one match and hopefully he succeeds as RB. I'd say, though, that Lucho obviously has seen more from him in training sessions so it's not like he just popped him to RB for one match out of the blue. If he succeeds, Lucho knows from what he has seen that he is likely to do well there.

Well Sergi Roberto has very rarely impressed when he is one of our front 5 players. Though he came up as an attacking mid with Barca B, his touch just seems a little heavy when he gets rare minutes there. Then again it is hard for anyone to look like a Barca attacking mid when the references are Xavi and Iniesta, followed by Thiago and Rafinha. Even Cesc struggled, Hleb was terrible, Keita wound up being great but said it took him a year to understand how to move, so that makes me so impressed with how seamlessly Rakitic fit in from the start.

Back to Sergi Roberto, where he impressed last season was when he played DM, he literally played DM better than Masch in terms of playing forward, intercepting, and keeping the ball moving in a Busquets style. That's how he earned his stay for another season. Then this preseason he got to play some RB, thank god, as Douglas seems sub par and is often injured, and Adriano is also often injured and possibly leaving. So as a utility DM and RB I'm happy we have Sergi R. but not sure if he'll ever contribute as a quality attacking mid at a club of Barca's caliber.
