If the team is based in Harrison, New Jersey, then wouldn't it make sense to call them "New Jersey Red Bulls" instead of "New York Red Bulls"?

I love the city of New York, but it sounds misleading tbh. Plus there is NYCFC and NY Cosmos so yeah.

    This again, really?

The team is named after the major city it plays near, just like virtually every other team in any sport in North America, including MLS. Just because that city happens to be right on the state's border, which is quite unusual in the United States, doesn't change that.

Ted Mosby wouldn't take kindly to your post:

All jokes aside, fair enough. Btw I swear I tried looking for a prior thread on the subject, but to no avail. Sorry if you've been asked this 100 times already :p

    It's the same reason why:

The Philadelphia Union don't call themselves the Chester Union (that's where PPL Park is)
The Colorado Rapids don't call themselves the Commerce City Rapids (that's where Dick's Sporting Goods Park is)
    and there are other examples

The LA Galaxy play in Carson, CA, which is still in LA County, but just barely, 14 miles from downtown and is an independent municipality. Salt Lake plays in Sandy. Most clubs who do this are asserting being a part of some major city's metropolitan area. Given the cost of land and hassle entailed of building within many cities, sports franchises frequently locate at the closest convenient spot, without regard to whether it is within the city limits or not.

They had NJ in their name longer than the new Cosmos have been around. So, yeah.

I get what you are saying, that is OK when the club is on the same state or the team moved like Jets and Giants. but RedBull were never in NY and now with club in NY it seems misleading and weak. If the Jets move back NYC (not going to happen) but if they did, I would feel the same about the Giants needing to go with NJ. It is almost like they are ashamed of their home state. NJ is a great state, owe it like the Boss

No it's not misleading. This was the original New York franchise in MLS so of course it's New York.

I don't know when Dick's Sporting Goods Park was built, but for my Philadelphia example the Union have never played in Philadelphia. In addition to how the location in the club name affects the club's fans, a factor in naming the location is that most people around the country know where Philadelphia is but not where Chester, PA is. The same goes for the Chicago Fire in Bridgeview. Of course people around the country know where New York and New Jersey are, so that isn't relevant to what the Red Bulls, Giants, or Jets call themselves.

This is absolutely wrong. The Red Bulls have played in New York for 20 seasons. They are not named after a state, they're named after their metro area, as are most professional teams in North America.
