Here's a prediction: Sasaki will play his beloved 4-4-2 with players out of position (Masuya at LM? Shibata at DM?) and after the tournament he will say "look, I tried my best but the young players just aren't going to cut it so let's send the WWC team to the Olympics herp derp." There's still a good team in that squad, I just don't think we'll get to see it play. On a different note, can we maybe split this thread into several threads next year? Like, one for the NT (and U-17s/U-20s), one for Nadeshiko League (and other domestic competitions), and maybe one for Japanese players abroad. We used to have a similar system before the 2011 World Cup but back then there weren't enough people around to make it work.
Here's my initial thoughts... 1) NO Emi N... 2) don't have a lot of height in the MF or at front. Just 4 players above 170cm and 3 of them are goalkeepers 3) good to see that WWC benchers were reselected and would have a good opportunity to start and anchor the squad. 4) good to see Takase back and is the "veteran" with most caps. Whould she be selected as Captain? 5) good that Sugasawa is in the squad too. Should have confidence after WWC performance. 6) a bit surprised that Ariyoshi wasn't selected, despite having a solid WWC tourney. 7) MF is going to look interesting. All have capable passing skills and offensively minded. 8) without Miyama, set plays could be somewhat challenging but an opportunity for someone to shine at the turney 9) Kamio is wearing 10. Good for her. I recall Takase also wore 10 in a past tourney. 10) 3 GK / 7 DF / 9MF / 4 FW Lastly, I'll be in Osaka during the EAFF so I can watch the matches live.
Live on television, I guess you mean.... Actually the match times should also be pretty favourable for European viewers this time around. 18.20 Wuhan time is 12.20 CET.
League split is a bit more even this time. 2 from JEF 4 from Vegalta 4 from Beleza 4 from INAC 3 from Albirex 1 from Elfen 3 from Reds 1 from Kuno 1 from Parseiro
I guess this would be the first tourney where the women won't have the FIFA crest on their jersey. Just the single gold star, I guess.
I only started watching WWC from the Japan - Australia game, so I really only know most the starters+Iwabuchi, Yamane, Nagasato Asano Can't wait to watch her play then
Any unreliable news about how this team was selected? Did the World Cup results influence this selection? Did the JFA pressure Sasaki to try something different? Like INACc4ever, I am also surprised that Ariyoshi isn't on this squad. She seemed to be one of the few stand-outs from the World Cup and she is usually relegated to being a substitute or even a back-up. This tournament could have given her a real chance to shine. With such a different team, lets hope Sasaki tries something different tactically as well.
Kamionobe... Sob, I still hadn't thought about that. Sad. Actually, I think she was given her "real chance to shine" at WWC already, and she made use of it big time! Are you aware that she was in FIFA's shortlist of players for Golden Ball? In my opinion, Sasaki, by now, see her as a "starter" (after all, that's what she was in this WWC), so he didn't feel like calling her, more than he did with other "starters"... It could be a very good time indeed: remind of the exact days: I could be back from holidays, by then... Oh, people, did anyone see what's been said on the Algarve 2015 thread? In 2016, Asian Olympic qualifiers and qualifiers for Euro 2017 could overlap with Algarve, that could end missing both European and Asian teams... It would be easier than ever for USWNT to win, in that case. From a tournament with most of top 10 teams in the world in 2015, to... this?
The excerpt of Sasaki's comment: I selected players who didn't play much in WWC and players whom I appreciated their performances in the league. If these young members develop confidence with good results, I can organize the members for Rio preliminaries based on many possibilities. I hope at least one third of them will be involved in it. Of course we will fight aiming at the victory. About four new members: Both Takenaka and Yamashita are improving much these days in the league as a GK with presense in their teams. Muramatsu is very stable, and I hope she will play both as a CB and a FB. Shibata always plays nice in Reds. She is not so fast, but constantly very well using her turn, faking or change of pace. I will have players who went in Canada convey the basic team concept to younger players.
In other words: no change in terms of tactics or formations. Have there been any (however unreliable) news regarding the whole thing about players not trusting Sasaki anymore and Miyama taking over coaching? I need some closure on this...
A conspiracy theorist would say the reason why she isn't (and shockingly so) selected for the EAFF is because of this "mutiny". But then again, there was that "unreliable info" on Kamio as well, so.
Which would - if it happened - a rather meaningless victory and most of the world would know. Of course the team and their fans would celebrate, but who would take them serious anymore...
I can't help feeling there might be more to this selection than Sasaki's official pronouncement. You don't suppose he picked a whole new team because he felt betrayed by the old one, at least the regular a starters? Well, it is always fun to guess about these sorts of things. Incidentally, I feel Kamionobe should be captain too, based on her leadership of Albirex. Plus, I think she is the oldest member of this squad, so she is everybody's senpai.
...Still sad Kiryu has completely dropped off the WNT radar. As i've said not too long ago, she looks miserable in the most recent Beleza pictures.....
Of course now she is the core member of Nadeshiko Japan like Miyama, Ogimi, Sakaguchi, Kumagai..., but don't forget Shimizu or Kitagawa are chasing her with full speed.
I created a spreadsheet of the 50 listed NT members, then compared the ages and heights of the 2015 WWC and 2015 EAFF squads. The EAFF is younger by 4 years but slight shorter in height. Note that ages were calculated based on what they would be at the end of the year. I hope to complete a column for cap appearance as well...
HEH, i keep finding these interesting videos of the other WNTs involving the Nadeshiko. Check out this mini game from Team Deutschland where they have to guess the word assigned to them by Nadine Angerer, in this instance: France and Japan. The keywords for Japan are hilarious http://sportschau.ndr.de/fifafrauen...iveID-videoarchiv274_videoID-yeswecan140.html
OK, managed to find the cap count in the JFA pre-WWC media guide. So both cap counts are based on pre-tournament appearances. There's HUGE difference in experience. We know Sawa alone is over 200 caps (reached milestone at the Swiss match). Kamio, Tanaka, Sugasawa, and Takase will need to be strong leaders for this sqaud.
