We already know that violently targeting someone's spine with a flexed knee to the point of breaking a bone is perfectly fine and doesn't even deserve a yellow card.

That would have been a 2nd yellow not a red. Plus I think the red was for the head but.

Can't even compare to the 2 because both Crespo and Batigol didn't take Argentina to any final and those 2 were arguable on the most stacked Argentina squads of all time.

Batigol won 2 Copa America and 1 Confederation cup and Crespo was on that 07 team didn't play in the final though.

Well, whoever they call up, they can't win a trophy for 22 years. Next opportunity the 2018 WC, it will be 25 years. I love it.

That may be true, but that is meaningless - the tournament was held in our country. Moreover, we Brazilians were kind; there were efforts to provide free camping spaces and very inexpensive meals. Many of them responded by acting this way and writing profane anti-Brazilian graffiti. I doubt they would've been this tolerant of us had we done in their country what we did in theirs. And many of them disagreed with the song they sang in Brazil and the version sung in Chile over the past few weeks.

Yes, Chilean fans had bad apples in our country, but the Argentines were notorious.

Messi was actually named player of the tournament is this some kind of a joke? Granted, I don't think he had a bad tournament. If anything, the best player in the competition IMO was probably Guerrero.

Messi played very good in Copa America, but in the final he was invisible. The same story....

Messi voted #1 and did himself the favor of declining. After that best player in 14 WC, I don't think he'll ever take another mvp tournament that he knows he wasn't the best.. I would too take the trophy as an insult, a pat in the back.

It's all guessing games, but I doubt it has anything to do with him not thinking he was the best or not deserving. This is not about being humble. It probably has more to do with going to collect the award in public after you just lost in the Final again. In football we all know that coming 2nd in a tournament hurts more than anything and feels like shit unlike the Olympics (unless you're heavy favorites and some team sports).

Also for someone who won the Ballon D'Or so many times, I think that MVP is pretty meaningless.

Honestly I think the 2nd place team should just have the choice to leave as soon as the game is over. Having them wait there for the whole thing to be setup to receive a silver medal is just plain cruel.

I don't mean as him being humbled, more like he seriously thinks he didn't deserve it, and didn't want the negative press.

Just like in the WC, he didn't deserve it and got a lot of negative media for it

Humble probably not the best word for it but that's what I meant. I don't think it's because he thought he didn't deserve it. C'mon ... how does he know how well all other players have played in the competition ? It's probably because he didn't give a shit about the award. Like I said, it's like being kicked in the balls. They'd probably have him pose for a pic and who wants to do that in that situation ?

I've read some comments on Olé's site from argentines really pissed at Messi. I suppose the level of nonsense there is similar to Uol's, but even so you can feel how hurt they are from losing yet another final. Messi's new nickname is now FRIOnel , from "pecho frio", a cold person who doesn't love the shirt he is wearing, who doesn't gives it all.

They're always pissed at Messi. I read a article title after the game called "Messi a guest in Argentina" or something like that. They'll never get over the fact that he was raised in Barcelona and has never played for a local team.

Like I've said before. If messi was Brazilian he would be getting Zico criticism, not best ever praise from Brazilians.

People would be saying the same exact things plus that he's a mercenary.

Remember Rivaldo used to get the same treatment before 2002!!!

A lot of those 2002 players did, and after 2006 they received that treatment again.

Before the 02 WC they were mercenaries and didn't love the amarelinha.

    Then they did
    Then they lost 06

Once again mercenaries who didn't love the amarelinha

I blame Parreira in a way for our WC'06 loss because he allowed a 'pop star' atmosphere in the camp where they players were believing their own hype!!

And I know I sound crazy by saying this but I have always been superstitious of Brazil doing Nike commercials before a World Cup because when we do we always lose!

Not as intense. Rivaldo was questioned, but so were Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos due to the 1996 Olympics' meltdown. But by 2002 Rivaldo had won the 1997 Confederations Cup and the 1999 Copa América. Granted, the former had little prestige then, but that's because we were spoiled, coming off the Tetra, and we wanted the Olympic gold medal almost as much as we wanted the Penta. (Playing back in my memory, after the Tetra was won, the next big goal was the Olympic title. We failed in 1996 and in 2000; we didn't even get to 2004... but the Penta in 2002, a mere 8 years after the Tetra, most definitely made up for that, to put it lightly.)

Messi however has won nothing at the senior level. Had Argentina won the 2005 Confederations Cup, it would've meant less than a Copa América title, but their title drought would've ended. Furthermore, Rivaldo had Ronaldo and Romário as teammates and literal competitors for "best player in the world/best Brazilian player in the world" position. Messi however has no such "equals," and that makes his burden heavier.

It the nature of sports, when your the best player, you get all the credit when you win and all the blame when you lose.
