Marking and foul rules was different in Maradona's day. Back in the day one player can foul someone 20 times without getting sent off. No doubt La liga defending physically doesnt even come close to this Copa let alone the 80's serie A. Stats dont tell everything, just watch some serie A video from 80's to early 90's.

Messi would have been injured has he received those tackles Maradona's get in every World cup.

This kind of play isnt part of today's football. For a good reason off course.

I agree with you. Messi , however, faces ultra defensive styles such as against athletico madrid, chelsea, real madrid, inter milan, even Iran. I do not think maradona faces this kind of defensive opponents.

Today's sobering observation - the only three run of play goals conceded by Argentina in this Copa occurred with Demi at centerback.

Whatever Garay ate or drank, he appears doubtful for the final.

This type of football is harder to play against than modern park the bus style. Today, most people think this Copa has been brutal compare to European football but not compare to this...

I know lots of people are saying that "they" are trying to give Chile the tournament, and without question there have been several dubious refereeing decisions throughout the tournament which have clearly favored and assisted Chile...

But why the hell would CONMEBOL suddenly do this for Chile? With all due respect (a phrase which always indicates an upcoming insult/criticism) - who the fu(k are Chile? They've never won anything, they are not a consistent or traditional power in the world let alone South America, they don't have anymore well placed higher ups in CONMEBOL than any other SA nation. If Chile or their FA had paid off the refs, there is NO WAY that would not have been leaked yet in this tourney with Brasil's fury over Neymar, Uruguay's fury over Cavani, Peru's fury over Zambrano - NO WAY the graff isn't at least discussed.

If there was ever a tournament that was going to be "given", it was Argentina in the last Copa, as the devil Grondona surely must have known that would have been the last one he would be alive to see and "host."

We all suspected shenanigans from the Brazilian ref with Messi, Masch & Kun on yellows - yet that guy called arguably the fairest game in the whole Copa. He didn't need to do much because the players demonstrated ACTUAL RESPECT for each other, but still.

That sonofabitchgloatingBlackHawkfan ( ;) ) @SupaMario is right as usual - get on top early, and stay focused. If that happens, it really should bode well for an Albiceleste ... win (gulp).

Now if they come out in fired up red waves and score the first two - which is entirely possible - that is the death knell.

I HOPE that Sampaoli and Martino - two pretty clean Santafesinos - will just tell their guys to play and don't worry about the under-the-skin tactics. Too late for that sh1t.

I agree with you, I actually like Demi, - he is still exceptional in the air, composed and capable with the ball at his feet, the players like and respect him, he has been selected by the last three Albiceleste managers for a reason. I just thought of that while I was running this AM.

That last Paraguay goal was actually Pastore's fault - HE is lazy going back and in the air. I love the guy, classy silky smooth, but it's the truth.

I know you're all jacked up for the Women's World CupFinal - USAUSAUSA!! - and the NASCAR Firecracker 500 this weekend, but try to watch SOME of the Argentina match anyway, pecho...

Sh1t brother, that River-Newell's "game" will be a SERIOUS A55 whuppin'. Boca beat them 5-0, I wouldn't be surprised if River put a touchdown and 2 point conversion on my sorry, shambolic Lepra. 8-0 is more than possible.

Honestly I want Chile to lose more than I want Argentina to win. I hate Chile. You ever been there? I went to Santiago for a long weekend and my god, the women over there are heinous. What a shit country.

That fu(king hilarious statement is classic you, btw. The most passionate of my abuelitos was my maternal abuela, who of course disliked most nations - And Chile was at the top of the list, more so than Brasil, which shocked me.

Never been to Chile, and now that you mention it never met an overly attractive Chilena. I'll tell you this, even as a raging heterosexual - That Chile team is replete with downright ugly motherfu(kers. UH GUH LEE.

I think because they play against us. many teams when they play us they use brutal interventions to the ball because the referees do not protect us. For example, Italy 1982 played rough and Gentile was kicking maradona everytime but against Germany in the final this rough play suddenly disappeared

Argentina is gonna win tomorrow, it is the better team by A LOT, and no referee or home crowd would be able to stop all that power

I don't know about this song. I liked the one about Brazil because it was about futbol. This one is too political for me. Now, I don't know how the average Chilean feels about the Malvinas and English colonialism in the South Atlantic, but I'm not going to blame them for the actions of Pinochet, anymore than anybody should blame us for the actions of Videla and co. Both were illegal rulers of their nations.

    Plus, there is this:

Anyway, I hope we kick their butts tomorrow.

I agree it's too political for me as well, but you have to admit the last line is pretty funny.

I do remember Chileans booing the Himno Argentino this past Tuesday against Paraguay, so it appears the political component between theses two nations is unavoidable.

I'd ask @RiverGaucho - The Abe Froman of Buenos aires - what he recommends, but he's busy getting Christina and Nelson Kirchner tattoos all over his body, so maybe DM him..

The bottom line about Chile is that Pinochet betrayed Videla, Videla and Galtieri betrayed the Argentine people by illegally invading the malvinas and sending young boys to die without proper training. Bringing politics into it is just stupid. The people who wrote that song probably don't know who Pinochet, Videla, or Margaret Thatcher are... And it may be painful for many people to realize this, but the person most responsible for the catastrophe of that war was Videla.

However, the Chilean people seem to have embraced their role and their hatred of Argentina, but from our point of view, there are many other reasons to hate chile, such as their guttural version of spanish and their ugly population.

@Christina99 A great place to watch the game would be el alamo on cordoba and uriarte. Another one could be casa bar in recoleta on rodriguez peña just 1 block from santa fe.
