So the FISC-Chicago game that was supposed to be this past weekend was apparently rescheduled to early July...

RSLW split the weekend, dropping a 1-2 decision at Houston but stealing 2-1 at the Texas Titans.

I'm starting to eat my words from earlier in the thread about ten-goal games... We had two more this weekend! The Seacoast United Mariners beat the Rhode Island Reds 7-3, and Primero de Mayo couldn't cut it at North Bay Wave, losing 1-9.

Looking at the standings by division...
    --Northwest is still pretty even
--Pac-North is being strongly led by the Fresno Freeze (4-0, +19) and tailed by Primero (0-3, -20)
--Pac-South has three teams on two wins (including Tijuana, though they're 2-2 instead of 2-0)
--Big Sky has no teams at four games total yet, though the Houston Aces and the Texas Spurs are on top at 2-0 each
--MW-Central has no clear leaders, but Minnesota is essentially dead already at 0-4 (-10)
--MW-Great Lakes has two teams at 9pts (including FCI) while the Columbus Eagles have a woeful -16 GD
--Northeast is being led by the Boston Breakers Reserves at 3-0 (+14) while Rhode Island is 0-4 (-16)
--The other four NE divisions barely have any games played
    --Same with Sunshine and Southeast

Things to look for in Week 5:
--Two Wednesday games in the NE division
--A couple big games on Friday, namely Houston @ OKCFC (last year's Big Sky leaders) and Beach FC @ San Diego (last two WPSL champs)
--57 total games from Wednesday through Monday (54 Friday through Sunday), so hopefully the standings will have stories to tell this time next week!

I forgot to make a week 5 update! We're now done with week 6, though admittedly there are a fair amount of weekend games that haven't been reported yet. That said...

--Boston Reserves, NYAC, Chicago, Houston Aces, OKCFC, Beach FC, and Tampa Bay Hellenic won all of their games in Week 6
--NE Mutiny, FISC, and RSLW split the weekend
--Rhode Island won a game, and by a 6-0 scoreline, too! Boston Aztec were on the other side of that blowout.
--Yet another 10-goal game occurred, this time with the Florida Krush crushing the Treasure Coast Dynamites 8-2 yesterday.

--The Northwest division has four of its six teams on winning records, ranging for 4 to 8 games played so far.
--Pac-North is shaping up to be a two-horse race between Tottenham Hotspur Eastbay Ladies (5-1-0, +5GD) and Fresno Freeze (4-0-1, +19GD) with perennial contenders the CA Storm (3-2-0, +7GD) in third but apparently on the outside looking in.
--Pac-South also looks to be a two-team race, with San Diego (4-1-0, +6) and SoCal FC (a.k.a. Pali Blues' spiritual successors, 4-0-0, +7) leading newcomers Tijuana Xolos (3-3-0, -3) and defending Beach FC (2-1-0, +5)
--Big Sky is a bit more open, with three teams looking like contenders - OKCFC (5-1-0, +10), Houston Aces (4-1-0, +9), and Texas Spurs FC (4-2-0, +6)
--MW-Central looks firmly in the grasp of the Chicago (4-0-0, +12), with only FISC (3-1-0, +7) really chasing
--MW-Great Lakes is similarly clear-cut, with Motor City FC (6-0-0, +15) eight points clear
--NE-Northeast has both the Seacoast United Phantoms (5-0-0, +8) and Boston Reserves (4-0-0, +15) well above the other four.
--NE-CanAm is firmly in the grasp of Empire Revs WNY (4-0-0, +12)
--NE-South Atlantic is similarly held by Chesapeake Charge (3-0-0, +10)
--The other two NE divisions are still muddled
--The Sunshine conference is a two-horse race between Pinellas County (3-1-0, +2) and Tampa Bay Hellenic (3-0-0, +9)
--SE conference is completely in the grasp of the Knoxville Lady Force (4-0-1, +12)

Week 7 will see the Seacoast United Phantoms and Boston Reserves clash for the first time this season on Wednesday. Other interesting games to watch will be Texas Spurs at RSLW on Friday, SoCal FC visiting Tijuana Xolos on Saturday, SoCal visiting San Diego on Sunday, Texas Spurs visiting Houston Aces on Sunday, and the CA Storm visiting Suprs EastBay on Sunday as well.

So, this is an early update, but there are several noteworthy results already:
--Breakers Reserves knocked off Seacoast United to get a firm grip on their division
--Tijuana managed a 3-3 draw against SoCal to put the first blemish so SoCal's record
--RSL Women won 11-0 over Texas Spurs. Yes, 11-0, that's not a typo on the WPSL side.

Stories from the rest of the weekend (still a nice handful of scores that need to come in, but still) :
--CA Storm upset Hotspur Eastbay, opening up the Pac-N division and staking a claim to the title, still 3pts behind Hotspur Eastbay for the lead but with a game in hand. All teams have either 4 or 5 games left this season, the Pac-N playing a full H&A schedule for 12 total games instead of the normal 10 most WPSL teams play.
--SoCal FC brushed off their 3-3 draw by beating San Diego, leaving them 4pts clear over the past champs and still 1pt clear of FC Tuscon, who have played an extra game.
--RSLW followed up their whipping of the Spurs with a 3-0 victory over Ft. Worth Panthers, pulling them 3pts ahead of the Spurs with a record of 5-2 (+17) but still behind the Houston Aces (5-1, +11) and OKCFC (6-1, +13)
--FISC is doing their best to keep up with the Red Stars Reserves, beating the MN Twinstars to stay at 4-1 to Chicago's 5-0. Both leaders should have played the KC Courage this weekend as well, though neither of those games are yet officially reported
--Tampa Bay Hellenic has now advanced up to 5-0, likely closing the Sunshine conference.

Not sure what to highlight for the coming week... Six midweek games, including matches with the Houston Aces and Breakers Reserves. Pinellas County could potentially claw their way back into contention if they manage to beat Tampa on Saturday. RSLW are taking the return trip, visiting the TX Spurs and Ft. Worth on Friday and Sunday respectively. The Spurs also visit OKCFC on Sunday.

I've said before that SoCal FC is the spiritual successor to Pali Blues, and they've certainly gotten a lot of press on WPSL's main site. They recently got a nice piece on their past weeken's performance, which both makes this result
look all the more impressive for the Xolos as the Mexican side was apparently down 0-3 at the half, and also gives us the first real hint of what this year's playoffs will look like:
We already knew where the national final four would be, but now we know A) the West regional will be in Seattle, and B) Pac-South will get two reps at the west regional, which I assume means Pac-North and Northwest will get one rep each at the West regional.

WPSL has also been posting mid-season summaries of several divisions over the past week; nothing really telling about playoff structure in any of those yet. (Also, it's clear some were written a while ago, as the Northwest summary puts Eugene in front when Issaquah actually pulled far ahead over the past weekend.)

Speaking of Northwest I wouldn't rule out Tacoma 253 (formerly AC Seattle), that has 12 points in 5 matches...btw in the club are playing 7 italian girls from SerieA and SerieB...

I just checked the roster on their website, but I don't see any italian player...there are a few italian-sounding family names but nobody I am aware of...and I don't know if they are anymore linked with Torino italian women team (currently in SerieB), looks like more a past thing...

We're getting to the point where it's going to be more of the same until the playoffs hit:
--Still many weekend games that need to be officially reported
--NW is down to Issaquah (5-0-2) and FC Tacoma (5-1); Eugene has finished all 10 games at just 4-3-3. Three weekend games still need reporting, and four more games total in the division.
--Pac-N is still relatively open between Fresno (7-2-1), Tottenham Eastbay (7-2), and the Storm (6-3) with two games to go for each team.
--Pac-S looks like it belongs to SoCal FC (6-0-1) but the second playoff spot is a race between FC Tuscon and San Diego, both at 5-2. Two games left for each team. Beach FC could also sneak up on that second playoff spot, as they currently have four games left, currently at 3-2. Watch for BFC@SoCal and SDSL@FCT on July 10th!
--Big Sky still a two-horse race between OKCFC (8-1) and the Houston Aces (7-1), with RSL Women (5-2, two missing games from this past weekend) as outside chances for 2nd place. The division goes to 14 games, though, so who knows?
--MW-Central still led by Chicago Reserves (7-0) with FISC closely trailing (6-1). Division goes to 10 games, with Chicago still to visit FISC on the 9th.
--MW-GL has been won by Motor City FC (8-0) despite the division playing to 10 games as the next two teams at 3-3-2 and 3-3-1.
--The Northeast is one point away from being won - Boston Reserves (7-0) are nearly there over Seacoast Phantoms (6-2-1) - division goes to 10 games.
--Can Am is still led by Empire Revs WNY (6-0), though with the division going to 9 games they could still be challenged by Pittsburgh (3-1)
--Power 5 is fairly open, NYAC (3-1-2) leading the NE Mutiny (3-1) by two points but also by two games. Division goes to 8 matches.
--Mid Atlantic is a footrace between two clubs at 4-1. You haven't heard of either of them.
--South Atlantic is, as always, lead by the ASA Chesapeake Charge (4-0) but the division goes to 8 games so it's still fairly open.
--Sunshine has been won by Tampa Bay Hellenic (8-0) with no more matches to play for them - several other teams have matches to play to finish the 8-game schedule, but everyone has dropped points.
--Southeast has been won by the Knoxville Lady Force (5-0-1) with the shortest schedule of all of WPSL's divisions (as if we needed any more proof the Southeast division was a joke).

I'm really beginning to wonder what the playoff structure will be this year... We already know the West region, but what of the rest? If WPSL decides to force a 16-team thing again, that means three of the 13 divisions would get a second team into the playoffs... We already know Pac-S is one, and Big Sky seems like an obvious choice, but the third? If I had my druthers:

    West: NW, Pac-N, Pac-S 1, Pac-S 2 (representing 23 teams) [already confirmed]
South: Big Sky 1, Big Sky 2, Sunshine, Southeast (representing 22 teams)
    Central: MW-C 1, MW-C 2, MW-GL, Can Am (representing 16 teams)
    East: NE, P5, Mid-Atl, S-Atl (representing 21 teams)

It's essentially the same as last year's playoff structure, except that the new Can Am division is bumped out of the East and into the Central bracket at the cost of a Great Lakes team. That said, I wouldn't be surprised of this:

    West: NW, Pac-N, Pac-S 1, Pac-S 2 (representing 23 teams) [already confirmed]
    Central: Big Sky 1, Big Sky 2, MW-C, MW-GL (representing 21 teams)
South: S-Atl, Sunshine 1, Sunshine 2, Southeast (representing 18 teams)
East: NE, P5, Mid-Atl, Can Am (representing 20 teams)

This seems the more likely from what I've heard. Torino rep told me that the conference playoffs would be hosted in New England (by the Mutiny, I'd bet), and that the top team in the South Atlantic Division would have to travel up there. (And at least for that division there are no divisional playoffs.)

    Midweek update:
The Houston Aces slipped up on their game in hand over OKCFC, only managing a 2-2 draw at the Austin Aces. RSLW's two weekend games are now reported, both wins, so the division sits OKCFC 24, Houston 22, RSL 21 with no games in hand for any of the three.
Beach FC have made up their games in hand and are now the third Pac-South team currently at 5-2.
Breakers Reserves drew Breakers Academy while SU Phantoms beat SU Mainers, so Breakers Reserves and SUP are tied on points, but SUP is done with its schedule while Breakers Reserves has two games left.

Alright, we're getting down to the wire!
--In the NW division, the gap between Issaquah and Tacoma has grown, the former now at 6-0-2 and the latter at 5-2, though still able to take first if they win their last three and get some help.
--Pac-N is as tight as Big Sky, with the former standing at Fresno (8-2-1), Tottenham (8-3), and the Storm (7-3). Two games left for the Storm (I misspoke earlier) and just one each for the two leaders.
--No new updates in the Pac-S, which still sits at SoCal (6-0-1) in first with Beach FC, Tuscon, and SDSL all at 5-2.
--Big Sky got interesting this weekend: RSL beat OKCFC, and while Houston beat Ft. Worth, they once again couldn't figure out Austin for another draw. As the Big Sky stands, it's Houston (8-1-2) in first with both OKCFC and RSL (8-2) two points behind but with a game in hand.
--MW-C is still a footrace, with Chicago Reserves (8-0) and FISC (7-1) both winning since last update.
--MW-GL Motor City FC (though they drew a match this weekend, first blot on their record)
--Nothing new to report in the NE, Can-Am, Mid-Atlantic, or South-Atlantic divisions. (They basically took a break for the WWC SF+Final I guess?)
--The Power 5, though, saw a changing of leaders, with the NE Mutiny (5-1) now a point ahead of NYAC (4-1-2) with a game in hand.
    --Sunshine Tampa Bay Hellenic
    --Southeast Knoxville Lady Force

It will be a tight weekend coming up, with the following matches to be played:
    Thurs.9 - Chicago @ FISC, Houston @ RSL
Fri. 10 --- Tottenham @ North Bay, Tacoma @ Issaquah, Beach @ SoCal, SDSL @ Tuscon
    Sat. 11 --- Pittsburgh @ Empire Revs
    Mon. 13 - OKCFC @ Houston
Most of the teams in contention play on the 11th and 12th as well, just against relative minnows.

Heck of a game between local rivals ACF Torino and ASA Charge last night - the Charge scored two goals in the first half, but Torino came back in the second half to tie it up. Despite the slip, the Charge claim that they've clinched first place (and the only playoff spot) in the division. This is almost impossible to verify because the WPSL standings and results on the website are about two weeks out-of-date.

If you want to believe the Charge's website, they were at 6-0 (18pts) with their closest competitors 3-2 (9pts) so a new draw would clinch the division. The WPSL standings page has them at 4-2, and it does have six games from them on the schedule page, but the schedule suggests those six are a record of 5-1 with a game on the 30th still not reported, so I'm inclined to think the team really is at 6-1 now and clinched.

After my previous post, I checked the Charge's record based on their Twitter feed, and they have 6 wins, 1 draw. Fredericksburg is in second place with 5 wins and 2 losses (both to the Charge) and can't catch them, so I think they have indeed clinched.

    Okay, so does that mean....
South region is Big Sky, S.Atl, SE, and Sunshine? Wow, Big Sky got JIPPED. And this "south region" setup means that there are a whopping 27 teams vying for that one national semifinal spot.

Does that mean the East region is the other four East divison, and Central is just Central1 v GreatLakes1? I guess last year the Central region skipped the regional semis as well and just had a regional final, but... yikes, still.

WPSL, I will never understand your logic.

New England Mutiny look to wrap up WPSL Power 5 Division title this weekend

So that's 16 teams feeding into one Final Four slot.

(I've got a query into the Charge about their path through the playoffs, so I'll update here when I hear back.)

Okay, this is making even less sense as we learn more. So that's suggesting that the Can-Am division winner will be grouped up with the two Midwest divisional winners.... and someone else to make four, I assume. So the Big Sky division gets just one top-16 rep, but the Northeast division and one of MW-C, MW-GL, and Can-Am will get two?? That's simply ridiculous.
