Wow I'm shocked they were the same, because they sounded very bad in week two. More-so than in week one.

Sorry for the self quote, and yes I guess it is Rapids related now but anyway he was on the bench and was the final 'time wasting' sub in the 90th minute and actually may have been at least the partial cause for an indication of 3 minutes of stoppage getting revised to 4, can't say I've seen that before. He had at least one touch but didn't really do anything good or bad in his George Plimpton-ish amount of time.

Garber to Miami to help with SSS, Commented that:

“When you have the right stadium plan in the right environment, we have success, and we don’t have that yet,” Garber said at halftime of Fox broadcast of the San Jose Earthquakes-Chicago Fire game. “David and his partners are doing a great job trying to get it done. We’ll be there in the next couple of weeks. Hope to be able to get something done.”...but Miami would beat the California club to the punch if it can work out a soccer-specific stadium solution.

So putting pressure on, followed by:

Anyone else hear that MLS is actually putting a "group" together to study thuis year if they should push up expansion and allow additional expansion teams in this decade? Kind of undoes the pressure he was putting on Miami above.

Caught that as well. Also sounds like Minnesota is getting announced soon.

On Wednesday, in fact. Announcement at Target Field-- which makes sense as the Pohlad family, who own the Twins, are Bill McGuire's partners (along with Glenn Taylor, owner of the Timberwolves) in bringing MN United up into MLS.

I'm just spit balling here. I actually think the US could have 2 big soccer divisions. I could see two sub-leagues (not divisions); A MLS West and MLS East each with 20 teams. I probably have some of these cities wrong, but if I were in charge I'd have a plan to look like this by 2030. Same rules for both, same salary cap, etc...

    West :
Current - Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Jose, Galaxy, Salt Lake, Colorado, Dallas, Houston, LA 2
Add - Sacramento, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix/Tucson, Boise, Albuquerque, OKC, Austin, San Antonio, Omaha

    East:
Current - Revs, Red Bull, NYCFC, Philly, DC, Minn, Chicago, KC, Atlanta, Orlando, Toronto, Montreal, Columbus
Add - St. Louis, Miami, Detroit, Louisville, Memphis, Richmond, Charleston

If done right, I think somewhere between 36 and 40 teams in the US/Canada could be perfect. But you can't have that many teams in one league. If you stop now, there are a lot of great possibilities that will never materialize. Obviously you'd need air conditioned, closed stadiums in Vegas and Phoenix/Tucson. And obviously you'd really have to complete a robust evaluation on places like Boise, Albuquerque, Charleston, etc... This would be the only game in town for some of those cities and I'd assume that could be attractive. Personally I'd love for the Rapids to not have to fly to Boston or Philly for games unless it was some sort of title match or USOC match.

Without the prospect of promotion/relegation I too favor an East - West split in the MLS. With a maximum of 20 teams in each. One reason to have an east - west split is travel. After having spent time in the UK I've gotten a whole different perspective on this issue. Explaining the flight time from say NY to LA (5-6 hours?) to someone in England brings look of disbelief. It's got to be real tough on soccer teams to do so with the expectation of being competitive and then flying back home. So split the league reducing travel times as much as possible.

Of course another reason for the split would be to keep the number of games reasonable without the silliness of an unbalanced schedule.

Personally I would have liked to have the total number of teams capped at 20 and then any new teams coming into the league would have done it via promotion - which of course implies relegation as well. This doesn't seem likely.

Another issue (to expansion) is the amount of talent available to MLS teams. On one hand there would be more opportunity for US and Canadians to play at the highest level in North America. But would there be enough talent? Or would most teams become dependent on "foreign" players? And what would the level of play be?

With a population of 317 million and growing in theory there is room for a lot more teams in the US. But of course there are all the other sports that siphon off potential fans and media attention. So perhaps another way to think about expansion is what cities have the demographics to passionately support soccer.

And speaking of geography, the league and individual owners need to be very thorough when thinking about the best location for a stadium. Thinking of LA and their expansion team one area that they need to look to the north of downtown where fans coming from the north can arrive in a reasonable amount of time.

Portland and Vancouver adding Offensive weapons to their teams, oh and they are here now. That doesn't bode well for Future, down the road Rapids methodology

It's buried in one of these threads.

    ~$3.5M 2015
    $4.2M in 2019

That is absolutely awful! I was hoping to see numbers near the $10M mark in the next few years. So much for MLS trying to be a top league by 2022. On a 25 man roster, that is an average of $168K.

The general feeling is that the owners fooled everyone in this round of CBA talks. The expectation is that they were willing to increase the cap but they were going to hold the line on free agency. Instead they got the players so focused on free agency and then opened that door that they were then able to turn around and use that concession to keep salaries lower. Well played strategy by the owners if that was their ultimate goal, for better or worse.

Plus set themselves up to do same thing all over again in 2020.

I personally feel once we get into $7M cap, the MLS will start seriosuly contending for CCL title. But really there should be no limit on roster size but Top 20 highest player salaries (team wise) should be the "capped" portion.

And by the time we get to 7M a CCL competing roster price will have no doubt grown to something higher.

Love clubs who do their homework/ have a plan

As part of the process, Sporting would integrate into their academy structure into a to-be-created USL Premier Development League (PDL) club based in Garden City, which is so far away from Sporting Park (more than 350 miles) that it is actually a shorter drive to Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Colorado than to Sporting Park.

I haven't seen Cooper play much lately, so I don't claim to be an expert. But the word on him was always that, despite being so large, he never really played that much like a hold-up striker. His back-to-the-goal game isn't like that of Conor Casey, for example.

Still, we need a striker, and we could do a lot worse until Doyle arrives.

I think the problem here is, how do we convince a player to come for a few months and then be expected to take a back seat to Doyle? I think at best we end up with some unknown looking for a chance to demonstrate their ability, more likely we end up with another Buddle just wanting a paycheck.

I'm interested. In fact, I debated starting a post about serviceable, MLS proven goalscorers, including Cooper, that the Rapids might be able to acquire as a hold over until Doyle arrives.

That said, Cooper isn't ideal in our setup, as others have already noted. Someone like Barrett would make more sense. Lenhart maybe too. The pickings are pretty slim.

When Doyle arrives, he moves to centerback with the other tall guys.
