I'm not quite this old but familiar that UK used "Soccer" for a long time before switching to "football" for the same sport.

The word "soccer" was in fact the most common way of referring to association football in the UK until around the late 1970s, when it began to be perceived incorrectly as an Americanism.

That's good to know. I thought it might have been a lot earlier in the 20th century.

Orlando City is officially Orlando City Soccer Club, not FC.

NYCFC is a sister club with Man City FC and Melbourne City FC, so I assume that's why they kept the FC.

LAFC is a temporary name, according to the owners.

Minnesota United FC, well, you've got me there.

Don't quote me but I believe Minnesota United was chosen to blend, represent, and pay homage to past names of the club which included MN Thunder, NSC Minnesota, and MN Stars FC. However, it will be interesting to see if they indeed keep Minnesota United when they bump up, hopefully, to MLS. IIRC, years ago, it was mentioned DC United had the lock down on United and no other incoming team could use that moniker. I hope that's not the case as the Impact, Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, and Orlando City were able to keep their names. Minnesota United FC has a nice ring to it.

My bad on OCSC. But you can also throw Sounders FC and Toronto FC into the mix. Probably a dumb thing to let bug me, but it does. Let's stand on our own.

He seems like one of those people that gets all credit and none of the blame. His team has won a few so, he's on schedule to be a genius.

If Dallas has a good year (50 points and a playoff berth lets say) the naysayers are going to have to eat some crow IMO. Yes, his rookie year was bad (though not as bad as Pablo's) but after that he'll have put together 3 good seasons with at least 50 points with two different teams, and 3 playoff appearances.

To me this just proves my point exactly. Tripping over yourself to laud credit. Its a Pariah trait.

Ok then, what's your requirement for Pareja to turn into a "good coach". Certainly he's not going to be a permanently bad coach because of one poor year.

Being "good" or "bad" isn't the problem. It's giving him a completely free pass on everything and assuming anything that went wrong is automatically someone elses fault, and everything that went right is 100% because of him.

He was shit for all of his first year, and half of his second year...and in that entire time he was wrapped in a cocoon and feverishly shielded from any form of criticism. Even in 2015, long after he decided at the drop of a hat to leave his unfinished project here, and stick us with a terrible, untalented, and broken roster...people still hold him to this magical standard that is completely different than literately everybody else...including his predecessor here who was more successful than he was.

That’s a good question, and it could be measured in a lot of different ways. Let me talk this out, I guess. The reasonable sports fan in me, without doing research, tends to think if a coach lasts into his second contract and is booted with a slightly above .500 record then he’s a decent coach in the grand scheme of things, similar to a .500 baseball picture that has a years and years’ worth of stats. By this measure I guess he’s well on his way if not already there.

But then there’s the guys that get to coach the Yankees. Should their wins be discounted? By how much? Obviously there is a lore for coaches that perform well in downtrodden places like Derby County and Forrest. But with MLS Cup playoffs set up the way it is so that teams can be “in it” well late in the season, I got to think that 50 points is a laughably low bar to “eat crow.” This is a playoff league much like NBA and NHL are. The bar, as far as I’m concerned is all about playoff record. Which is not totally accurate and fair, it reflects the goal and set up of the league. So what is Pariah? 0-2 now? Not bad, when considering it reflects just getting to the playoffs. But like Quinn said, I know coaches with better playoff records that for some reason are held in less regard.

When you first asked the question my initial reaction was to think that its RFOs fault by simply having such a negative reputation. Everything the RFO touches touch turns to shit. So then Pariah’s record must stem from his ability to turn chicken shit in to chicken salad. Obviously neither extreme is true but RFO does indeed have a bad reputation. Perhaps to OPs benefit. If he gets to 50 points you will not see me in the mass lining up to shower credit on the man. 50 points and then making a long cup run? I think I would, but I don’t think he has the ability.

50 points is probably a bit of a low bar, you're right. In the 4 years we've played 34 games 5, 9, 10, and 9 teams have hit 50 points or greater. I'm not sure its laughably low though. You're still looking at at least a top half finish or better if you hit 50. Lets move the bar to is meets or improves from last year (54 points, 4th in the West) though.

I think we need to get this discussion moved. Who's the mod again? We should tag him. I like this thread too much to drag it into the prior coaches gutter.

We can argue the merits of "laughably" just as much as a 19 loss season can be dragged back out again. First of all, we are already penciling in his 50 point season. This is the part about him that I just don't get. It's part of the Pariah mystique I guess.

Done. Kind of Rapids related; kind of not. Since it leans more on the topic of Oscar I threw the discussion in the NRR thread.

54 points? That's easy. The Rapids could snag 54.

Of course it might take two seasons.

Doesn't this qualify as "Rapids Related?" At least many who post on this forum might be hoping so.

I'm gonna have to record it. I'm watching every match on Unimas as long as they have the SAP! I will miss they way they say "Conor Casey" but I feel a duty to support the SAP option.

It's a choice between an English speaking local C team or only understanding 15% of what's being said. I really like this Friday night Unimas.

That's insulting to the local C teams. Its actually the same announcers every Friday, Caliguri and somebody (can't remember) and they are horrible. Like beyond "A red card, that means he's ejected right?" level of horrible.
