As NYCFC join the league, a budding rivalry with NYRB should be on the cards... What's the best suggestion, to move the rivalries forward? There could be several options: The Atlantic Cup to be expanded to 3 teams with NYCFC, NYRB & DCU The Atlantic Cup to be expanded to all I-95 MLS teams A new Rivalry Cup with just NYRB will do A new Rivalry Cup is not necessary Any other suggestions? What say you? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_rivalry_cups http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-95_soccer_rivalries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Cup_(Major_League_Soccer)
In general, I think rivalry cups are silly - let the game speak for itself and the rivalry develop naturally. But if you had a RBN vs NYCFC, I'd go with the Empire Cup
It has been between DCU & NYRB/MetroStars only... Phily & NER have been the "Orphans of Rivalry Cups", now joined by NYCFC & OCSC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Cup_(Major_League_Soccer)#Winners_by_year
At some point there will be a nyc/RB cup thing but not until the fans of those teams care. I notice with all the passion Philly fans for example, still nothing has been created, going on 5 years. Maybe not meant to be.
NER-NYC Rivalry? New England Revolution eager to start a new Boston vs. New York City rivalry at Yankee Stadium http://m.mlssoccer.com/news/article...new-boston-vs-new-york-rivalry-yankee-stadium
The only trophies that matter are SS, USOC, and MLS Cup.. All others are like participation trophies.
I think most of the top mls rivalries are a result of big/important matches, especially in the playoffs, plus some on and off the field shenanigans. LA Seattle is getting big, sj v la, nyrb-dcu started with a lot of metro playoff defeats. The NYRB-NYC rivalry will be interesting since you will likley have fans from the same neighborhood supporting different teams. Dont think a cup is needed, just need a few meaningful matches where some type of elimination is on the line.
NYRB have already won the New York / Hudson River Derby, upon winning the first 2 of 3 match-ups this season. Will NYCFC pull one back on Aug-9 at RBA? On their red hot form now, won't rule that out...
