Figured we needed a new thread for 2015

    And it is official: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/31600194

2022 World Cup: Tournament set for November and December
"The 2022 World Cup in Qatar should take place in November and December, a Fifa taskforce has recommended. Key football officials met in Doha to discuss a number of options following fears a summer event would endanger the health of players and fans. Summer temperatures in Qatar can exceed 40C while those in November and December drop to around 25C. Tuesday's recommendation is expected to be ratified by Fifa's executive committee in Zurich on 19 and 20 March."

Favorite quote: "A recent statement from the Premier League said: "The 2022 World Cup was bid for and awarded to Qatar as a summer tournament. The prospect of a winter World Cup is neither workable nor desirable for European domestic football."

Already saw EUFA is requesting funding for having to reschedule their leagues, bet they get this legal bribe just like Fox got with additional WC broadcast rights, bid free.

It's going to make for a weird season for competitions that play Aug-May.

Just watching an ESPNFC recording from other night, Staurt Holden let out that Houston still retained his MLS rights (Left 5 years ago) simply by offering an 10% increase to his expired contract. Says players all want "some form of free agency" and will strike for sure if they don't get it.

Yeah, because a guy in England is up on the current CBA talks.

I've been saying it for over a month and my opinion hasn't changed. This is saber rattling from the players but in the end they're going to agree on a CBA without full free agency. The rules change around teams holding rights of players coming back to the league, some tweaking around the re-entry draft, and a significant bump in salary for the low end guys (the 48Kers go up to 75K-80K, 36K slots go away to the USL). The owners can give all that up fairly easily and that's good enough to get a lot of players to agree.

A strike won't get the players what they want. Jared Watts (48K) is going to feel a month of salary loss a lot sooner than Kroenke is going to miss a home game or two. The strike fund is about enough to play players 60-70% for about a month, after that its tapped out. Looking at that vs. a 50%+ jump in salary is an easy decision for players.

Or . . . "The prospect of the 2022 World Cup taking place in Qatar is unconscionable and thus FIFA will open the bidding to countries who treat all humans with dignity and respect, regardless of their status in society."

The above thought might also take the next WC away from Russia.

Fifa continues to screw up by the numbers: "Fifa says it will not pay compensation to clubs and leagues unhappy about plans to play the 2022 Qatar World Cup in November and December. It also said no apology was necessary for the scheduling of the tournament, which will disrupt a number of leagues."

Part of me thinks that this is part of somone's Machiavellian plan to make Fifa look so bad that they force reform. However, that implies that someone there is motivated by something other than blind greed or incompetence.

Guess you don't know he has been rehabbing in USA for over a year now. Steve Nicol also said it made more sense for Union to raise salary floors but Holden said from his talks with Player Reps that is second to Free Agency.

But could be what he wants since he brought up the whole Houston still controls my MLS rights because of a 10% salary increase on an expired deal, even though 5 years have passed

His location mattered less to my point than his current employer. A guy who isn't actually in the union I meant.

British TV giant, Sky Sports, has completed a deal to televise MLS matches for the next four seasons. At least two matches per week and all of the Playoffs as well as the All-Star game will be shown. Sky will also conduct a weekly highlight across several different media platforms. Thierry Henry will be the leading on-air MLS expert.

Huge news, IMO. Expanding MLS into foreign media markets is nothing but a good thing. We are learning slowly but surely that curiosity, in MLS, amongst players in Europe is growing fast. Now it's time to capture that curiosity and earn the respect from others around the globe.

Yup, me too! He's appeared a few times in-studio for SKY and has caused quite a stir by ripping Arsenal to shreds. IIRC, he said they were regressing, lacked the physical punch, nowhere near a title contender, and are a general bore to watch. Henry is very opinionated, always has been, but he has a way to charismatically express his opinions without showing disrespect. He's brutally honest. I'd love to here his honest opinions and punditry regarding MLS. I anticipate never a dull moment.

USA v. Cuba U-17 WCQ (CONCACAF), from the 'It had to happen' Department, Cuba's GK has the first name Jesus - natural signing for the Switchbacks if he defects to the US?

I watched the 1st leg of Alajuelense-DC United last night, which was a pretty sad affair all around if you were not an Alajuelense fan. The DCU backup keeper started because Hamid is hurt, and he was horrible.

Sadder still was that the denizens of the N&A thread wracked their brains to come up with a suitable description for Dykstra's disastrous outing, and came up with "Ceus-like" and "Nasco-like."

There's a side of me that kind of enjoys watching the MLS partisans, particularly those that like to debate MLS vs. Liga Mexicana, MLS vs. the Bundesliga 2, or MLS vs. the Championship, psyche themselves up for the CCL every year just to be rudely (and often embarrassingly) reminded where the league stands in its own region. 10 years ago I was surely the same though.

There is, however, a somewhat curious disconnect with the debates happening in the USNMT forum at the moment. An accepted explanation for MLS side's failures at these early stages is pre-season form and fitness, which makes sense. At the same time, Klinsmann's remarks about pre-season form and player fitness as an explanation for the away result against Chile are getting very heavily criticized. Seeing as how the lines keep getting drawn as Klinsmann vs. MLS and people participate in both debates, it strikes me as at least superficially odd.

IMO the issue with "pre-season form" and performance in CCL has more to do with being in sync and in rhythm as a team/individually regarding skills and dynamics and less to do with actual fitness.

I agree. It certainly plays a huge role. For what it's worth though (I didn't watch the game), observers were noting that Montreal looked absolutely gassed in the second half which led to them conceding twice.

I don't like how those threads devolve into the same worn-out arguments about tangential stuff like the EPL, etc. whenever an MLS team flames out. The CBA thread went the same way. Maybe mods should just throw all EPL posts into some thread in the general forum, it just mucks up threads.

I'm sure it's tough at this stage of the season...fitness, getting in synch, and incorporating new players must all be challenging. Then again as people noted, two MLS teams lost their groups during the MLS season and failed to advance. (Though IIRC MLS did pretty well in the group stage in the previous CCL.)

Montreal did look better, their forwards were at least able to attack Pachuca. DCU was poor all around. Montreal had a bunch of new players, while DCU seemed pretty much to have last year's starting lineup in. Having to start Steward Nasco in goal hurt (what happened to Willis?) but their D was fairly porous.

I hate how one result becomes an indictment on everything someone has an ax to grind about, the schedule, the entire league, and the styles of play. It was one game watched by 25 people.
