Yeah, true, he does look younger but he's 29. But my point is, he's still young but not too young. Not like a kid with potential or an old man in decline. What you see is what you get. And it's not like they'll sign him for a long term deal, like if he was Roman. He won't be here at 35.

I'd love to see what Ruiz can do, and at any rate it's not my money. If they don't give it to a player, they'll give it to the barras or they'll steal it themselves. The only bad thing is, it could create divisions in the team if he makes a lot more than most players and doesn't bring it, he'll have to prove himself. But it's a risk worth taking, if indeed he is as good as he seemed to be at the WC.

I still am not sure about Monzon. I think he will help, and we really needed a LB, but I was really hoping they'd get Tagliafico from Banfield, a kid with great potential -and great huevos - who I think will eventually do well in Europe. Tagliafico and Peruzzi as fullbacks would have been awesome.

jaja this isnt terrible logic, but that is still going to happen. whether they sign him or not, it just ends up being more money.

Yeah, I thought the same about Gago or Orión.

On other hand (about Monzón) I also prefeer Tagliafico.

River bringing it, with all their starters, while Boca is playing with a B team. The decision by El Vasco to play with subs is understandable, because it's a preseason practice game and Boca has to beat Velez next in order to avoid the first round of Libertadores. Beating Velez has to be the priority and you have to save the starters for it, but it still sucks. We still need to beat the gayinas!!!

I know it's just summer, but still...an alternative team, a player down for a key portion of the second half, and we still beat them.

Like we always say, nacieron nuestros hijos, y siempre serán nuestros hijos. :D

If they lose they will have a playoff against Independiente del Valle
I forgot which country they are from but not from Argentina
Also if Velez lose then Estudiantes goes on to play that respechaje I think and Velez are out

They're from Ecuador. Who thought they were from Argentina? LOL

The game is horrible so far. Lots of fouls in midfield. Bad from both teams

Got the job done. Could have made it a lot easier than it was. Velez seemed to have run out of ideas.
But anyway, back to the Libertadores where they belong.

It's hard to take too many conclusions from these preseason summer games, but given the importance of the Velez match and all that was at play, as well as the intensity inherent in any superclasico, we know these were serious matches. I am encouraged by what I saw so far. (I'm going to ignore the first game against Racing).

The defense -other than Marin- looked solid, even Burdisso played well. With the reinforcements coming I think El Vasco has a chance to work on a solid defensive four, with Peruzzi on the right and several players to choose from in central defense. I am still not sure about what Monzon can bring defensively, but Colazzo looked strong on the left.

The midfield controlled both games for the most part, playing well defensively and creating play. Even with the different players, the scheme seems to be working. I expect Erbes to have a strong season, and I am encouraged by Gago, who is starting to look a bit more like his old self. Hopefully he'll stay healthy, that's a huge key to this team.

Offensively there is still some work to be done, but interesting alternatives with Melli, Gago and Carrizo changing the rhythm (and the kid Pavon as well, shame about his injury!).

It's early, but I like what El Vasco is doing. I'm optimistic.

Today is the second summer superclasico, in Mendoza. Boca again will play mostly with an alternative team, but this time the lineup will include some key players, like Fernando Gago and Cata Díaz. Also included will be Fabián Monzón and possibly Marco Torsiglieri.

Possible lineup: Sara; Fuenzalida, Cata Díaz, Torsiglieri o Chiqui Pérez, Monzón; P. Pérez, Gago, Cristaldo; Palacios, Gigliotti, Chávez.

Boca reportedly acquired Nicolas Lodeiro from Corinthians. If confirmed, this is an exciting move for Boca. A "zurdo" with great vision, mobility, talent, passing and shooting ability. At 25 a well established Uruguayan international, he may be the missing piece for El Vasco's team.

    Copa Libertadores, here we come!

Well, can't complain with 5-0, what an awesome way to pass the summer!

Even though it was an unusual game, because River didn't really show up and because of all the red cards, still I think it was an impressive display in midfield, especially from Gago, Perez and Cristaldo. Palacios also played well, and the defense was solid (granted River didn't pressure much). Torsiglieri looked very solid.

What an awesome summer! We get Peruzzi, we get -apparently- Lodeiro, we beat Velez, we humiliate 5iBer...

    And then there's this:

Carlos Tevez says he will return to Boca Juniors when his contract with Juventus ends, which means in one and half years. Wow!

¡Volvé, Carlitos, vas a hacer historia en Boca!

Here is a summary of the changes this offseason so far

    Acquisitions:

Guillermo Sara (Goalie) from Betis (ex Rafaela)
Pablo Pérez (Attacking Midfielder) from Malaga (ex Newells)
Cristian Pavón (Forward) from Colon (ex Talleres)
Alexis Rolín (Centerback) from Catania (ex Nacional Uruguay)
Marco Torsiglieri (Centerback) from Metalist Ukraine (ex Velez)
Gino Peruzzi (Right Fullback) from Catania (ex Velez)
Luciano Monzón (Left Fullback) from Catania (Boca's Cantera)
Sebastián Palacios (Forward) from Arsenal (Boca's Cantera)
Nicolás Lodeiro (Attacking Midfielder) from Corinthians (ex Nacional Uruguay)

    Left:

    Pablo Ledesma (Attacking Midfielder)
Hernán Grana (Right Fullback) to Colombus Crew
Sergio Araujo (Forward) to Las Palmas
Leandro Paredes (Attacking midfielder) to Roma
    Gonzalo Escalante (Midfielder) to Catania
    Mariano Echeverria (Central Defender)
    Juan Forlín (Central Defender)
Emanuel Insua (Left fullback) to Udinense
    Leo Suarez (Midfielder) to Villareal
    Sebastian D'Angelo (Goalkeeper) to Tigre
    David Achucarro (Defender) to Ferro
Nahuel Zárate (Midfielder) to Godoy Cruz
    Joel Acosta (Midfielder) to Olímpo
    Luciano Acosta (Forward) to Estudiantes

Now lets get subjective. These are some guys should leave, they are not worthy of Boca:

    Claudio Perez (Central Defender)
    Federico Bravo (Central Midfielder)
    Gonzalo Castellani (Midfielder)

Any others? Lots of fans are down on Emmanuel Gigliotti.

I have to admit that you were right on this one. I was surprised by the level of some of the kids. Especially three from River, I have to admit. The goalie Augusto Batalla, the defender Emanuel Mammana, and the striker Giovanni Simeone. Along with midfielder Angel Correa (ex San Lorenzo, now at Atletico Madrid) they were the class of the tournament. Even the village idiot Humbertito could not keep them from shining.

And as far as Boca's youth, I am very pleased this summer with the play of two 18 year olds who got a bit of playing time in first division last season, DM Adrian Cubas and AM Franco Cristaldo. I think both would have done well in the NT as well.

But it was nice to see our kids on top again, after several years of drought. I take back what I said earlier. ¡Grandes los pibes!

Wasn't Paraguay trying to push Cubas to play for them? I think they were willing to give him a cap,.

Yeah, his dad is from Paraguay and Ramon Díaz reportedly wants to take him to play for them. He is a good DM, I prefer him to start over Erbes, he seems to be smarter tactically, even at 18.

Well like i said. River won the 2012 Sub 20 Copa Libertadores and 2013 World Youth Club Cup, beating Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid in that tournament.

Right now, River's 6th division (16 year olds) beat Juventus in the Al Kaas Cup with the sons of Gallardo, Simeone, and Burruchaga all starring.

The 18-19 year old team just finished second in the Copa Chivas, losing to the hosts in the Final- and beating your Boca twice along the way to reaching the Final.

I can also say that in this Sub 20, it was a good tournament for Tomas Martinez, the number 10, who was very active. You can also add Seba Driussi- who despite being a huge failure every time he's played with the River first team- scored the tying goal last night that really gave Argentina the confidence and tranquility needed to see out the result.

For these many reasons I think River- and most clubs in Argentina- are still by far the best in the world at developing talent. Like you said, even Boca has some decent young players coming through into the first team. Cubas looks to be very promising.

I look at Barcelona the supposed "best cantera" in the world yet, i see nothing to back this up. They had the Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets/Puyol generation all come through at once and since then nothing. Fabergas doesn't count- they gave up on him and he went to Arsenal and they ended up paying 30 million euros to bring him back. Same with Alba- they gave up on him, he was a nomad, ended up at valencia, and Barcelona had to pay 18 million euros to bring him back.

I look at barcelona now, and i see absolutely no evidence of top players coming through there. I see they still need to play Mascherano in defense because they can't produce a defender with enough quality to even play against the likes of Almeria and Getafe.
