@Ismitje , any news on the Palouse shootings? I saw that your immediate family and friends were safe. Did they catch the shooter?

FL sisters rub out older brother when parents were out working:

Columbia County deputies said Ariel confessed to shooting and killing 16-year-old Damien Kornegay as he slept in their home on Monday evening while their parents were away on a truck-driving job.

When Keith and Misty Kornegay returned to town, they were arrested on child neglect charges.

The Kornegays' youngest child -- a 3-year-old girl -- is in state custody.

@Demosthenes "I personally don't think white people should tell black people what does and doesn't harm black people; that's for black folks to decide. I don't think men should tell women what is and isn't sexist. And I don't think non-Muslims should tell Muslims what is and isn't harmful to Muslims."

How about "No one should tell anyone else what is good or bad for them"?
Or, "Anyone can say what they want, but no one else has to accept or believe it"?

Thanks for the asking. We have two cities of 25k or so straddling the state line, eight miles apart: Moscow ID and Pullman WA (add the students in and we're closer to 75k). The shootings were in Moscow, and the perpetrator headed northwest through Pullman towards Spokane. Pullman PD spotted him west of town and called in the sheriff and state patrol, and they caught him about 20 miles north.

Motive is unclear. He had changed his name away from that of his adoptive parents about a year ago; the first victim was his stepmother Terri Grzebielski, who is a beloved member of the community (a musician and physician's assistant who has been credited with saving several student's lives with quick action over the years). She was shot in her home. The shooter then went to the office of his landlord, a local businessman involved in all sorts of local volunteer organizations. Tom Trail was killed in his office, and another person visiting him there, Michael Chin, who is in stable but critical condition. The shooter then went on to a local Arby's, walked in and asked for the manager, and shot her dead on the spot. Belinda Niebuhr had just been promoted to assistant to manager after seven years there. The Grzebielski's ate there periodically and always spoke with Belinda, but why the shooter stopped to target her too is perplexing.

The sad thing is my first reaction is relief. The shooter could have killed more pretty easily. His dad was not home or we presume he would be dead too. And the Arby's stop could have been a massacre.

Lots of people are gutted in Moscow. This is the community's third multiple homicide since 2007.

Wait, so people with "distasteful" opinions are not protected by law?

Wel, they're protected by law like all those who make illegal things. There's a chance they'll go to court but even in that case they're protected by some laws, like presumption of innocence and the fact they can defend themselves.

I think you overestimate the homogeneity of the US even in the late 18th century. The homogeneity of the Founders is not in dispute, though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the late 18th US was mainly composed of small landowners (excluding the slaves and Indians of course but the freedom of speech didn't apply to them by the way) of -still- relatively equal conditions.

Or how banning the public proclamation of some ideas will not make those ideas disappear.

Now what she said, and also missed the point. The comment was that non-Blacks can't be Black and therefor can't experience being Black, and that leads to issues of non-Blacks telling Blacks how to interpret the context. The same goes for Muslims v. non-Muslims and women v. non-women.

And that is what the entire discussion about the satire of Charlie Hebdo is about. A political cartoon is a cartoon with an intended message. But it is an interpretative piece, and not everybody will see the same thing. The intent could be good and true, but the execution can miss the mark, which makes the intent for naught. But not for everybody. The danger is telling somebody that what they interpret is not correct. Another way of saying that is telling somebody how they view the world is in correct. And we all know the dangers of the latter. But when it is said we must understand the context to understand the political cartoon, it is missing the point that it can still be interpreted in a way that that artist had not intended, no matter how good and true the initial intention may have been.

Hang on..."distasteful" opinions are actually illegal and are prosecuted regularly?

Late colonial America was made up of a pretty ethnically diverse mix of people from several social/economic stations and religions. Were they overwhelmingly European and white (among the free men)? Sure. But there were English, French, Germans, Dutch, Scots, Swedes, Spanish, Irish, and of course Africans and natives. There were several religions (at least two colonies were founded specifically to establish safe havens for two religions - in the case of Rhode Island, it was founded without an official religion intentionally, which was very atypical.

There were large-scale landowners, merchants, debtors (Georgia, mostly), criminals, clergy, trappers, hunters, mercenaries...but there were plenty of laborers and small-family farms that did not depend on slave labor, that basically worked more or less at a subsistence level.

    Does it? Really?

    That's "the danger"? How?

Dangers? What? This is constantly happening anywhere anyone has a political preference that they express. Lord knows I've been told how I view the world is incorrect (and evil). Right ********ing here, in fact. Is that really "dangerous"?

    Feature, not bug.

Is this the appropriate place to mention that our right to keep and bear arms is our best defense for future Charlie Hebdo's? All content creators should be packing heat.

It depends on what you call "distateful". If you publish a book or a paper in which you claim that Jews deserved to die during Holocaust then you have a good chance to be prosecuted yes.

    Thanks for this info.

    Why?

It's abhorrent by just about all standards, but why is it illegal?

I can understand that it seems weird to people who live in a country where total freedom of speech was established from the very beginning of its existence. But as I explained the French history is a bit different.
