Because there's gonna be an official announcement tomorrow, and I really wanted to start the thread.

Technically, LA 2017 (I'm not calling it LA 2, or Aztecs or Aztex or Dragons) is a reality as an official expansion team. The old Sports Arena will likely be demolished and a soccer specific stadium built in its place (although I don't know this 100%.) There have been hints that the academy program will begin sooner, but again I'm not 100% sure.

Do we have any idea what will be revealed tomorrow, besides who the owners will be?

No, they're keeping a pretty tight lid on it. I imagine that a stadium "plan" will be introduced, but no idea about names, colors, etc.

They have less than three years to get this thing off the ground, so hopefully they'll announce stadium plans and maybe some dates, maybe a fan vote on a name, etc.

On today's ESPN FC show, Taylor Twellman said he is hearing that the team may play in the Coliseum while the soccer stadium is being built next door at the current Sports Arena site.

shouldn't there be a sub-form in the candidate cities section? i mean this is a sure fire thing now so it is more deserving than detroit to have it's own subforum right?

We are working on it. The fact that Chivas USA's forum exists already makes it a little more complicated.

ah. i imagine there was some LA2 talk in the chivas usa thread that needs to be parsed into the new sub-forum, from back when it was thought this would be a hiatus and rebrand and not a contraction/expansion. make sense.

I remember someone asking about an archive for defunct teams. That would be interesting down the road, I'm not sure if it makes sense from a tech/$ point of view. It'd be interesting to compare the difference between Miami, who was on the up swing, folding and Chivas, who was very much on the down swing, folding.

so if the temp stadium and new stadium are going to be around the memorial colisuem/sports arena area that would put it only 12 miles away (straight shot south on the 110) from stubhub center. hot sure i'd be happy about that if i were the LAG.

It has to be the LA Aztecs!

I'm also willing to bet that Sigi Schmid will be their first coach!

The new stadium will be right on top of where the Sports Arena is now. If the things I've heard are remotely true it'll fall into the "holy-crap-thats-awesome" category of stadiums. It will not be a bare-bones stadium, but designed for international and Liga MX games as well as MLS as well as other civic type events.

Everyone and their brother is reporting that the team will play in the Coliseum until the stadium's built, which sort of indicate that it won't be ready by 2017.

Will US Soccer and FIFA allow "Liga MX games" (and not just friendlies featuring Liga MX teams) to be played in the US -- specifically in this "holy-crap-thats-awesome" stadium that LA2 will one day call home?

The LA Coliseum? Even for a temporary venue, it seems a little too big for MLS.

2017? That's the same year that Atlanta starts. Are Miami and the last team going to come in at the same time ? Or is Miami really done? Let's go L.A. Artillery!

There are already Liga MX games played at the Stubhub Center and Coliseum, so I'm guessing yes.

Actual league games that count in the Liga MX domestic competition?

No more Becks in Miami? What happened to that?

They've done "inter-liga" type competitions (featuring only LigaMX teams playing in LA and Texas, I think), but I'm fairly certain FIFA hasn't granted any exceptions to "domestic leagues" playing beyond their own boarders (outside of course of those standing/known things that FIFA has granted like Wales hosting EPL and Canada/USA sharing MLS).

Makes sense. If they broke ground today it would be tight to get a new stadium up by 2017. And reality is it'll take at least a year to even get to that point.

Don't think so. There have been friendlies, but no league games. Thus far USSF hasn't allowed it.

One thing it can be guaranteed not to be is the LA Aztecs. NASL holds the name and won't be giving it to the league they still see as a rival.
