    Goal Assist
The final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal.
    Second Assist/Key Pass
A pass/cross that is instrumental in creating a goal-scoring opportunity, for example a corner or free-kick to a player who then assists an attempt, a chance-creating through ball or cross into a dangerous position.
    Key Pass
The final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball having an attempt at goal without scoring.
    Chances Created
    Assists plus Key passes.

It should count as one imo. But from this up here it seems to me that "chances created" is assists + key passes, not including second assists/passes... Am I confused?

    Brilliant.

    Maybe I'm confused!

I derive from the glossary that both the final pass and (some) second-last pass to a goalscoring attempt counts as a 'key pass' (automatically also as created chance; created chance = key passes + assists).

In other sports a 'second assist' is the second last pass leading to a goal (or goalscoring attempt in this case).

So both Gerson and Pelé created a chance in the lead-up to the goal you cited above.

Can't look in their logbook of course but I think both Gerson and Pelé received a '+1' in their chances created stat.

I had a conversation with PDG about Deyna (also talking about how well he played) but this also explains why Deyna does so well in this stat despite often passing from a deep position: pre-assists (and pre-assists not converted by the attackers) also count as created chance. For example: Deyna passes to the pacey players like Lato or Gadocha who then in turn make a cross.

I think not only you (confused) but even the whole crew who did the stats for Castrol also were!

Assist is clear (the final pass to the scorer) but the weigh (point) to count it is always debatable i.e. some assists might be worthy at least 2points = 1goal and some could be less than 1 point ...

Creating chances is a vague term. SOme are valuable and some are more like LUCKY or "random" pass/cross in to the danger zone or open zone.

Let's take the game earlier UCL final Bayern vs Dormund as example. I am sure later on many would only remember Manzukic and Robben were both scorer *obviously recorded! But the main "creator" behind was no one else but Riberry.
1st goal, he drew 2,3 DF together and made a nice split pass that Robben ran into ... and (ouff he mistiming and overan passed the GK) he finally made a cross into the area. Mazukic was a LUCKY dude to tap in after Dormund's DF committed a bad clearance.

2nd goal, Dante made kinda random long cross into the area, Ribbery brilliantly back heeled to Robben scroing the winner.

James, many saw Robben as MotM (including the whoscored parameters) and he is not exactly a likable person. But anyway, that is not the main point.

If I'm correct, Ribery got on both goals a +1 in chances created. The first goal was a pre-assist (a key pass) of him and the second one a assist.

Anyway, regarding how the game has changed (also the famed France teams of the 80s do not end high in the 'passes per 90 minutes' list), this is a good documentary.

Although it might also be the case that preferences have changed as well, that making a lot of passes wasn't seen as a pinnacle of skill in earlier times (as said earlier).

yeah it's not the point that whois the MoM - and I agree Robben to be one (well he scored the valuable winning goal and made an assist for 1st goal)
my point was ( regarding the creation) that years later many would easily locate this
Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben nets winner against Borussia Dortmund

but likely to forget who was the creator behind ... or unless .. Ribbery was a Zidane or a "Beckham"

Last bold... totally agree with you. As I also made comment of that when compared Brazil70 to Spain10-12 . Spain (and Barca) were true "pass masters" and dominate the games with their pass number and possession %, but result sometime stay on the other side of the horizon.

Look at the UCL last 8-10games, almost all winners had less possession % and less pass in number

I looked for some examples of players who are in the top 10 (except players of Spain 2010). It are compilations of actual World Cup games in the year they made the top 10 as stated above - with the full list posted on the previous page.

Do not expect that people watch all but provides a good impression (despite that not of all games a compilation exists).

This is again very misleading STATS (shot accuracy % counted by OPTA) FLAW:
It's not about how many shots "on goal" *as they did, is important but

1- how many goals/shots as end result

    - who cares if player A shot 19/20 on target (95%) but only ONE GOAL ended up in the net!
    - now compared to player B with 10 shots on target (50%) but 5goals are result. = FLAW 1

2- The % could favor a "shot on target" but eitehr straight at the GK or mucless power > a "close miss" within 1 feet off post but more wicked power = FLAW 2

There used to be a widget available on OPTA's website but not any more, so maybe what you can find on Big Soccer posts is your best source now.

    Too bad. :(
I was looking for the full stats, but there's this chart with players from the top 4 teams of each tournament, which is sufficient i think.

That's ok. I hope my answer didn't make it seem like I implied it was a useless question (sometimes things aren't easily translatable in terms of sarcastic/friendly tone maybe - although I guess I thought adding 'mate' might help lol). I've asked more useless ones before I'm sure anyway, and you'd have had a lot of posts to search through to find that one anyway.

Just thought as Puck seemed less active yesterday and I could see his relevant post I'd point you towards it.

No problem at all. This thread, and this forum in general is just a goldmine. So may amazing posts and posters.

Do you know if there's a ranking of chance created in volume per World Cup? Obviously players playing for teams that did well will score better but I'd be super interested in this as well.

It might be a matter of calculating it from the data on this thread (possibly needing to research minutes played, using a website like everyfourthyear.com maybe).

But there's also this thread (chances created being one sub-category on it, and shown in column AL of the spreadsheet linked in post 1 on page 1 for various notable players but not all - Gregoriak then picked out the top performers in various categories including chances created on the thread and added to what Puck put on this thread it can help probably):
