It is terrible. Period. You are wrong and we are right. Throwing crap on the wall is not art no matter how stoned the person that created it was. Does anyone remember the site that NYCFC recently had for people to create their own logos? It gave you generic shapes (circle, shield, star, etc) to start with and you could just stuff crap inside the shape. I am pretty confident MLS used this app to create this logo. Then they added the kickstand/crutch for flair.
Did I tell you to stop criticizing it? You can criticize all you want. Just stop acting like it is a clear cut case that it is bad because you don't like it. And I'm not defending it because it doesn't particularly speak to me either. But there are going to be people that like it, and they are no more right or wrong than you are.
The thing is they didn't, but they certainly should have. If they did, they wouldn't have been given the option of having a line sticking outside the crest. That wouldn't be in the default presets.
I minored in art in college and know how these artsy people work. They literally throw crap together and they come up with their explanation after it is done. The only thing this type of artists is good at is BS.
I like it better than the old one but that doesn't mean I like it - I'm neutral to it. I don't like the kickstand - it doesn't make sense to me. (And I'm someone who doesn't care about symbolic explanations - does it look good is much more important than what someone thinks it is supposed to mean, it doesn't have to mean things to me). I don't like the white blank space but I don't mind the colored blank space for the 14 teams that have it - Which kind of sums up my neutrality to it. It looked good on the Galaxy jersey and I think it will look good on the Sounders jersey, so that's good.
It is clear cut that its bad. Its worse than bad. I am right, because only my opinion matters to me. It is up to you to figure out what you want to do with your opinions. I'll exercise mine in any fashion I feel like, granted that it fits in with the guidelines of the forum.
I agree with you in theory. "opinions are like a$$holes", but here, there are some general design theories and practices I think aren't met. But again, I guess even then there are differences of opinion.
I'm coming down on the "it's okay" side. Certainly it's much better and more useable with media than the current logo. I look forward to seeing what they are going to do with it over the upcoming year(s). For those who are strongly condemning it now, you're entitled, of course, but I would keep some opinion wiggle room open because the flexibility for many uses will be key. I liked the Henry leaning on it image.
You should do whatever you want. But you should also realize that you haven't see the full use of the new shield yet, and your judgments (as are everyone's) at this point are only based on a partial reveal and exposure.
I actually find this more interesting than the bland one. I wouldn't mind the league using their logo in this manner - fill up that empty space with promotional material - not as the official logo but for special situations. Edit - It also makes me think they could have filled up the empty space with red and white vertical stripes, which could have symbolized both the USA and Canada.
Wonder what all the haters thought of this when they first saw this in the early 70s (well those of you like me who are old enough to have been here then). All I recall at the time is that the shoes were cheap at GI Joes in Portland.
It will take some getting used to. I don't hate it, but the 2nd half empty space seems a bit blah. I kinda get the 3 stars and don't really have a problem with them or what they stand for. Club - The owner, the fans, and the players Country - To each their own, a bit contrived perhaps as some just are not fans of their NT, but most of us I think are a fan of some national team. And most players I think dream of playing for country so this makes sense Community - The local community that the club can impact, the league wide community with things like MLS Works, and finally the global community. That is what came to mind as I read the meaning behind the three stars
Took me 15 seconds to improve it greatly. I still don't like it but it is waaaaaaaaay better than what they have. It at least looks finished.
I am fine with hidden meanings in logos as long as the logo still evokes a strong brand message, and if it is done in a clever way. A good example of this is the FedEx logo... (look for a white arrow) This crest by itself does not give the feeling of a soccer league... it feels more like a club then a league. When announcing a new brand logo you should not need a document with paragraphs of text to explain it's meaning. The meaning and feeling of the brand should be more obvious. With that said the crest looks contemporary on the Galaxy Uniform and it works well in digital media. With time it might grow on me, but all the marketing explanation (defining the halves, etc) of the crest is marketing fluff.
I'm seeing lots of posts on here and on twitter about an "issue" with being unable to distinguish between several of the team-specific color schemes on the crest. That's not really an issue at all. The crests are only going to be found on the jerseys in the first place, and they are only colored to match the existing color schemes. We already knew that there are a lot of teams in this league that use incredibly similar color schemes.
So they said that the idea for a lot of this came from the Portland tifo back in the day, with the whole community, club, country thing... are you telling me Seattle didn't invent this logo?
