I see that the Championship's newest members are still not an option in the profile page.

For any overseas football fans who might be interested we are a club based in Rotherham, a town in South Yorkshire in the north of England. Our roots as a football club go back as far as 1870, which is older than most other clubs. Our nickname is The Millers.

Following a turbulent period during 2004-08, suffering two relegations and the club barely surviving liquidation we were taken over by a new chairman Tony Stewart, his first move was to take us away from our historical ground Millmoor which had been our home since 1907 (due to crippling rent costs). From 2008 we played for four seasons at an old athletics ground in nearby Sheffield whilst our new stadium was built (funded by grants and private investments).

In 2012 we moved into our new home christened as the New York Stadium with a current capacity of 12,000, we also appointed a new manager Steve Evans, who in his first season (and our first season at the New York Stadium) he guided us to automatic promotion into League One after we finished 2nd in League Two, the following season (this past season) we finished 4th in League One securing a place in the Play-Offs where we overcame Preston and Leyton Orient to secure back to back promotions and our place in the Championship next season.

Hopefully now we can stabilise ourselves in the Championship, possibly expand our stadium and fullfil the dream of every club, reaching the Premier League. :)

    Up The Millers!

    Hi IvanIV,

Assuming you're an American who has adopted Wednesday and not a Brit abroad (?) you may or may not know that Rotherham United v Sheffield Wednesday will be a big derby day in the coming season(s), there's a lot of rivalry between the clubs due to proximity and the fact that a lot of Rotherham towns folk tend to support Sheffield Wednesday rather than 'little' Rotherham United. :(

As for the crest there was supposedly a windmill near to Millmoor back in the day and lots of flour mills in the area which is where the club crest gets its design from.

Good luck next season, apart from when you play us ofc. :sneaky:

Yes sir I am a Yank. Was a little familiar with the rivalry but not all of the other tidbits you've informed me of.

Cheers and best of luck to you as well… apart from when you play us… :sneaky:

P.S. At least some of your fans aren't pigs. ;)

hehe yeah, tbh around here everybody seems to call everybody else 'pigs', both Blades/Millers use it for Wednesday but Owls fans use it a lot to refer to the Blades as well. There's less animosity between Blades/Millers as they're both sort of in the shadow of Wednesday but both Sheffield teams are allied in calling us 'toy town'.

How did you come to support Wednesday and not the mighty Millers? ;)

Did you catch our playoff heroics or is it difficult to see non-Premier League football over there?

long story on the Wednesday. i first heard of them back in 1982. pookspur and i were attending university, college, together and were talking about team names and how different american team names were vs english/european ones. he mentioned football clubs, tottenham hotspur fc, manchester united fc, sheffield wednesay fc..

flash forward to 1994 MLB goes on strike and i am fed up with them so i start watching the WC.

i get hooked and have to decide upon a team and eventually, within a few years, i settle on The Wednesday. i missed the glory of the Harkes years though.

i also follow Dumbarton FC as well… and Spurs…

It's just a derogatory term that the Sheffield folk use for Rotherham because Sheffield is a city and Rotherham is only a town next door to it (map here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Yorkshire#mediaviewer/File:South_Yorkshire_County.png)

Not all Wednesday fans will call us that because lots of them are from or live in Rotherham, Wednesday are the fashionable club in the area (for example not many Rotherham people support Sheffield United) but that is starting to change in Rotherham with our new stadium and success on the pitch.

Rumours are circulating that we've agreed a fee with Leeds United to sell Kieran Agard, our top goalscorer last season. :(

He refused to renew his contract in the summer so he only has a year left, this is what sucks about English football compared to MLS... as soon as a 'small' club finds/nurtures some quality players and is successful the bigger clubs with more prestige swoop in for them paying higher wages and the small club struggles to replace them and ends up back where it started at the bottom. :(

I hope we manage to replace him with someone decent, this must be why our management were so angry at losing out on Stevie May to Wednesday.

It's fell through apparently over personal terms, probably demanding stupid wages like with us.

There's nothing much we can do when bigger clubs tempt a player with offers of higher wages, the last thing we want to do is get all silly with spending after the troubles we had 8-9 years ago, albeit we have a good chairman now.

    We got lots thanks.

Wolves were much better than us today and wasted a lot of chances first half but fortunately we got the points in the end. It's still hard to tell which teams are good teams and which teams are not so good this early on in the season but a win's a win, hopefully we'll take confidence from this and kick on.

Yeah that's a good documentary msilverstein47, it shows some of what we've been through off the pitch in recent years.

Disappointing result last night against Watford after a promising performance but I think the team is still not completely gelled and will gradually improve, my only concern is that after the past two seasons we aren't a team used to losing and confidence will take a big knock.

yup. as myshoe's said, ivan, there's lots of Wednesday in Rotherham. amongst the names you'll know, harry speakup is originally from there, as is (I'm pretty sure) Southy*. Despite the implications of the last 15 years, or so, Wednesday are traditionally the biggest club in South Yorkshire by a stretch. That, though, hasn't kept them from rubbing elbows recently with not only neighbors like Barnsley and the Swine, but with Donny Rovers and Rotherham, as well.

anyway ... just seen the thread, and have opted in. good luck in the campaign, myshoe. good to see the club apparently on a good footing and doing things right - even if it does include Steve Evans. :p;)

*speaking of whom, he's sent me that autobiography of Lee Bullen. I'll read it in the next week or two, so let me know if you want it when I'm done. There's a Wednesday window sticker in there ... I'm thinking he may have sent that for you.

Are you an Owl supporter then as well pookspur?

Ian Holloway has been quite complimentary towards us ahead of the game tomorrow:

"Rotherham are a really good team. Mick Harford's scout report from Tuesday night tells me they will be the strongest side we've faced so far." - didn't Millwall play Wednesday mid-week. :ROFLMAO:

"Stats-wise they hammered Watford in midweek. They were the better team but let two goals in on the counter-attack."

I bet he's just trying to keep his team on their toes so they don't go into the game complacent.

Oh btw, Kieran Agard has signed for Bristol City in League One, he turned down a Leeds move so they must be paying him hansomly.

We've signed Richie Smallwood from Middlesbrough who helped us get promoted last year and brought in a couple of loanees.

We're used to rubbish like that, I've just spent the past hour watching Sky Sports News Goals Express and out of all the Championship games the only match they didn't have highlights for is us :( got to watch it again at 8pm, stuff them I'll just watch the BBC's Football League highlights tonight.

But yeah another great result today, it's also promising that out of the 4 games we've played so far (W2 L2) we've played teams who are all currently sitting at the top end of the table.

it's more or less as ivan said. I'm spurs for sure, with misty origins from way back in the 70s. but I've had an interest in Wednesday since John Harkes was part of what were some very good teams in the early 90s. I try to get over to white hart lane at least once a year, and when I get over, I try to get to other grounds, as well. in 2007, I decided to get up to Hillsborough, and went to an owls message board that ivan told me about simply to inquire directions to the ground from the train station. some of them said 'get up early, and we'll show you around', which happened, along with some pub time (and a 5-0 win v soton), and meeting loads of decent Wednesday fellas. I kept posting at the site and so it developed from there that when I get over, I tend schedule in ways that include Wednesday fixtures, as well as tottenham.

I enjoy getting up to Hillsborough a lot, and I wish Wednesday success. but you only get one, don't ya? I'm definitely spurs.

nice result at the new den, by the way.

Ah okay mate that's cleared that up, yeah I saw that you have Spurs plastered everywhere but when you got talking about some Owl's friends I thought you might have a dual allegiance or something. :p

We've had a promising start to the Championship so far I just hope we can keep it up and hopefully improve when it comes to our goal scoring, we're a lot more defensively minded this season and our defence is doing a cracking job but we're finding it difficult to score so far.
