General Question: I'm writing an article about the death and rebirth of the back 3 defense and I have a question: When and what club/national team did the 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 fall out of favor in Germany and a 3-man attack (4-2-3-1/4-3-3) become the dominant formations in Germany, and from what manager?

The last time that I remember the German NT playing 3-5-2 was WC 2002 under Rudi Voeller. After that we played 4-4-2 up until the Quarterfinals of EC2008 against Portugal.

Really?? i am immensely excited at the singapore office opening!(well i am a singaporean)
In recent years, i have seen a small increase in dortmund jersey wearing singaporeans but i doubt it is anything substantial as Singapore is a BPL-crazed country

I know the far east is crazy about the BPL but I am sure other leagues are making moves there. Isn't Erik Thohir majority owner of Inter and he's based out of Indonesia? I guarantee you that a few deep runs into the CL will help export a lot of merchandise to the Americas and East Asia.

The crazy thing about it is that Subotic is the only player with American Nationality to play in the Champions League Final and if I wanted to go to a store and buy a Dortmund jersey or scarf (I live in DC, one of the biggest soccer markets in the country) I don't think I could find a store that sold any

I don't believe someone owning a club will necessarily mean his people will become fans of that club. A star player from a country signing with a club has more impact in that case.

Exactly my point. Meanwhile, Bayern is already taking the first steps to conquer the North American market in conjunction with the big Fox broadcasting contract taking effect for the 2015-2016 season.

Another very trustworthy BVB fan has said BVB does have plans for a USA office in conjunction with Puma. But a lost cause like Singapore first?

Really Herr Tress? Really Herr Watzke??

Maybe this was a low hanging fruit? North Americans may have more disposable income but Asians are certainly bigger football fans. Not to mention what we lose out in margins, we are likely to make up in volume. I am purely speculating but I'd like to give Treß and Watzke a tad more credit.

And the EPL is king in Asia. You really think we're going make a dent in that colossus?

Oh, one other thing. BVB tried the Asian market in the early 2000s too.

Failed miserably. And the EPL is still king there. What's changed??

The football market has grown substantially in 14 years and it's not just inflation. Also if we are making a profit on the operations there's an inherent brand value we should account for.

Idk, from following the BVB twitter and facebook accounts I've seen a lot of Asian fans, and not just from South Korea and Japan which already respect the Bundesliga from Kagawa and Son's exploits.

I think what's changed is a combination of things. Firstly the EPL and especially Manchester United hype train has died down a bit when it has become apparent from recent CL results and their national team sucking that they aren't the self proclaimed best league in the world hands down.

Also with the development of online translations programs, BVB making an English version of their website, and especially the BVB twitter using English as much as German has helped make it easier for new fans. The international shop has also helped significantly too since probably 5 years ago it was hard to get a BVB jersey outside of Germany. Basically BVB and the Bundesliga have finally took a page out of the EPL's playbook and started heavily marketing outside Germany. Although I have to give credit to the Bundesliga, they have an awesome youtube channel that I see many comments saying why doesn't the EPL or Serie A have something like this, so they are ahead of the game there.

But the biggest factor I think is BVB's and Bayern's CL performances last couple of seasons. When BVB won the double, the general soccer fans kinda knew that we must be good but didn't really have a high opinion because they didn't watch the Bundesliga or wrote it off as Bayern having a bad two years or didn't care. However after seeing BVB first hand in the CL, something every soccer fan watches from Brazil to Indonesia, that's what made people take notice. Bayern and BVB destroying EPL clubs and then the big Spanish 2 in the semis made people know that the Bundesliga was legit. Also BVB's style is a huge aspect. Just like people associate Barca (or at least used to) and Arsenal with nice attractive to watch soccer, same with BVB. No one ever associates BVB with boring games or parking the bus. And Klopp's TV interviews also gained a lot of fans.

So the differences are all the new social media avenues, other leagues learning how to market themselves like the EPL, and the 2 seasons of solid CL outings. The conditions are just way better than before. But the management should definitely focus on the US as well, try to market to the German descendants like Serie A does with the Italians even though maybe German Americans may be less proud of their heritage due to a couple world wars. But there are plenty positives of German culture that can be highlighted. Also we definitely need to do a summer tour next summer like the other big clubs do, either US or Asia. Even fricken Hoffenheim went to India last month.

I didn't say there weren't any Asian BL fans. But the number doesn't compare to the EPL's and the EPL number is still growing......

And how do you account for the number of Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal fans in Asia? The number of Liverpool fans?? The Liverpool resurgence will be huge for the EPL in Asia.

Dude, the EPL interest train in Asia wasn't all about Manchester United and it has never been about the national team. Sure, Man U. played a major role, but they are not dead nor are they the only club of interest.

BVB has had that English site for quite awhile now. It isn't some recent marketing strategy. I don't mind saying that a couple of us here had a hand in pushing BVB to get it started and we also had a hand in keeping it going when the hard financial times hit.

Actually, they were pushed quite a bit by a number of international fans. Again, a few of them post here too. This wasn't some great idea on BVB's part. Trust me, BVB had to be pushed to do this stuff........

No argument here whatsoever. Totally agree.

I don't know how they are "way better." Sure, it is easier to try to get in thanks to social media and better TV coverage. It is easier to get word out. But it is the same for the EPL and others too. Word of the EPL losing steam in Asia is greatly exaggerated. BTW, getting back to BVB, did you know that before they started the English site years ago, they tried to break into the Chinese market? They thought they were being innovative. They failed miserably. This is not to say they should not try again. I just believe they should be trying to get their asses here to North America as quickly as they can. Just as Bayern has done by opening their offices in New York City and doing another tour here this summer. The USA and North America have also been strong EPL markets. But as you mention below, there are enough European immigrants and decendants here to take on the EPL. More so than in Asia. More so by far. I just think BVB is being stupid by making Asia the priority here.

Here, you could not be more wrong. In the vast majority of cases, Germans and German decendents here are very proud of their heritage. Especially the younger generation. The area I live in here in South Central Texas is an area which large numbers of German settlers made home. Some still speak a version of German (Texas Deutsch) and they do what they can to keep German traditions alive. I am originally from the east coast (Philadelphia). German clubs and other places and groups based in German traditions are all over the place.

Again, no argument here. Completely agree. I think we should have been doing it two years ago after our CL Final appearance. BVB is doing much better marketing the brand than before. Believe me, I get this. But I also believe they still have lots to learn. I believe the fact that BVB management is so damned afraid of the local fans demands that the club remain as much of a "local club" as possible, it is hindering them from maximizing the club's international marketing potential.

And it is so many of those same local fans who whine and cry about Bayern's financial advantage the most. Sure, Bayern has pulled hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dirty deeds over the years. But they are also a financial and marketing powerhouse. They don't mind being an international club and they do cater to their international fans. BVB has closed the international fans gap just a little and we are better at marketing than we were as I said before. But Bayern is still light years ahead of us here. And I believe Bayern is about to open that gap a bit more by possibly conquering the North American Bundesliga market before BVB ever gets started..........

Completely agree here. I live in Western Canada, and the number of patriotic German's here is incredible. For most of the Champions league games involving German teams as well as the World Cup, there are German jerseys all over the place.... much more so than other nations (only England would be even close). There is a big opportunity for BVB, and in the melting pot that is North America I believe you are seeing a younger generation that wants to assert and identify with their ancestry....... for whatever sociological reason that may be.

There are two factors at play here.... and unfortunately they are diametrically opposed.
    1) Social media (and simply better media coverage as a whole) over the past 5-6 years has allowed a team like BVB to emerge onto the big stage and really expand their brand awareness. It's expanded the potential audience, and allowed the recent success of the club to have a much greater reach; with the impact of that being a substantially increased media and branding presence. I notice this amongst a lot of the casual fans here.

    2) The problem with that is that media covereage, and more specifically the international fan base, (primarily the casual fans) are often very fickle. With the amount of noise that is created, and the constant effort of many clubs to become more internationally focused, only continued success over an extended period of time will allow a brand to truly establish a decent foothold in the market. BVB's recent CL performances (and their style of play), has bought them a lot of attention.... however they need to continue that for at least another 4-5 years (likely much longer) in order to establish something. Bayern is a perfect example here.....

The Premier League also struggles to make money in China. But China is one of the few countries where the Bundesliga gets better TV coverage than the Premier League. So the Chinese market is certainly not a lost cause for German clubs. On the contrary, the market seems to have great potential.

Not only is the Bundesliga very popular in China, the German NT is also the most popular foreign NT in the country.
