I am an Argentina fan so my optics are different. Logically speaking Spain still ended up winning and Zidane's last match was something he'd want to forget himself. But Argentina ended up losing after that red card on Monzon. As far as the hand of God goes....it was against the English!!!
Still. I think your point was that JK was scum for diving to get that call. No more so than Maradona for his antics or DeJong for his or any other WM scumbag having cheated to get a result or to injure someone. A bit of perspective.
Yeah I understand what you're saying. I am just throwing in the footnote that except for the hand of God (which is questionable since the English weren't really playing all that well anyway), the others didn't affect the result of the game, did they?
WC 1990 was like 11 shots to 1. Argentina was hacking players left and right. I'm not excusing Klinsman or his dive, but in the end, the be tater team won.
It was far too long ago but I don't recall the Argentina team that much worse than the current squad in terms of skill level. They themselves were hacked by Cameroon. And Italy weren't just hacking they were literally kicking Maradona. I beg to differ of course - the better team lost.
They did nothing, absolutely nothing of brilliance during that match....not offensively nor defensively. I don't think you watched the match. Argentina in no way was the better team that night. None....nada.
Not to mention that a few minutes before the s dive, there was a clear penalty not given after a foul against Augenthaler. I haven't watched the whole match, but according to Wikipedia, Argentinia didn't have a single good goal-opportunity during the game whereas Germany had plenty.
Are we rewriting history again because we aren't old enough to remember it? 1990 WM Germany outplayed the Argies full stop. The bus was parked and he'd for PKs. They sucked the whole tourney and were lucky to even be in the knock out round. We should have a rule that you can only comment on things you were alive, and old enough (say 12 or 13 or older), to see if you are going to make certain comment.
Volley didn't dive. Kinsmann did to get Monzon sent off, but replays show Monzon's studs were up. The PK was proper if you look at the replay. Never got the ball and made contact with the player.
Argentina put on a pretty good defensive display against the highest scoring team in the tournament. If Germany was so good, why did it take an undeserved penalty on Voller by Sensini for the the goal. Not to mention they got 2 red cards by the end. Attacking impetus alone doesn't make a team good.
Clear PK by the LOTG at the time. Don't know what you're seeing. Matthäus passes the ball, Völler takes a directive touch as he's brought down by Sensini. This was admittedly not as bad as the foul on Augenthaler that was not given earlier in the match. Better link here if you can get through the insufferable British announcers perpetually pissed at anything German.
Just because the studs were up, doesn't mean there was contact. I've had studs come at me in the same way once and I was writhing in pain, not bouncing like JK. Even a WWE wrestler could have learned from that one.
Bottom line is you said, "Better team lost". From that moment on - you lost all credibility because the better team was Germany and not Argentina. If you would have watched the match, you'd be able to see that yourself rather than just catching youtube highlights.
Unreal. Argentia came into that match with one goal. Foul and slow down the game and hope to win on penalties. It was the moment I started to dislike Argentina. They were not better and deserved to lose.
God I hate to point this out but contact is (and was) not required. All you need to do is make the ATTEMPT, not make contact. It was serious foul play because he went in stud up and raises his leg in an obvious attempt to get Klinsmann. It's a finer point that most fans don't get. No problem. I was a referee for 27 years so it's a bit easier for me to spot.
For the life of me I am blanking on that foul. Given it was David Luiz and he was essentially playing hockey half the time in his last two matches, I would not put it past him.
That dick head elbowed Klose twice in the face. He should have been red carded. There should have been yellow cards too for all the diving that was going on.
But that's a strategy, isn't it? So is parking the bus with 2 banks of 4. So is playing tiki taka in your own half. I don't like Jose Mourinho's Chelsea and Inter, nor do I like Pep's Bayern. But I respect their respective strategies and if they execute it to achieve their goals, that's all that matters.
I think the ref was letting a lot slide given that the score was so lopsided. There should have been some concern about the players' safety.
I think not wanting injuries or cards had much to do with the 2nd half not being goal heavy...that sh#t could have been 10-1 had they played all the way through.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Hey - what do you think about Gotze being benched in favour of Schurrle and Draxler?
