Cruijff (and others I guess) changed it because no-one outside the Dutch language areas knows how to pronounce the letter 'ij' properly.

Btw. I think Kuyt may actually be just Kuyt. The letter 'y' does appear in Dutch names as well.

Too lazy to look it up...

Yah. I'm a VanGilder which I've seen VanGelder and VanGuilder as well. Sometimes with an n tacked on the end too.

Although I did see a "Hotel VanGilder" in Amsterdam once. It led to my friends telling me I should do a "Clark Griswold visiting family in Europe." But I just took a picture outside and moved on..heh.

Oh it totally is, but its right from her twitter account:
483335609314852865 is not a valid tweet id

Probably some fan tweeted it to her, and she posted it. Still cool

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like many more fans agree with me that Kuijt should start as DMF:

Also, for those who are unaware, Brooklyn if I recall was actually named after Breukelen.
Even after New Amsterdam was remnamed to NY, many Dutch names and roads remain in the NYC area.

"Hunky Dory" is another Dutch-rooted word. This sign is seen at Ellis Island, NYC.[IMG]

The namesake Harlem in NYC is not quite as cozy as Haarlem in Netherlands. I love Haarlem. Nice, quiet and pleasing on the eye and soul. You can ride a bike from there to the North Sea, which is nice.

    ^lol agreed.

    http://www.anthropologyinpractice.com/2009/11/finding-traces-of-new-york-citys-dutch.html

Further down, in NJ, there's Rutgers University, my alma mater.
I wonder if I went there because of its name :D
Rutgers is the only original colonial university that did not join the Ivy League (along with William & Mary)

But, in a sense of irony perhaps, although the first ever "football" match in the U.S. was held between Rutgers Univ & Princeton Univ., unfortunately that match was an "American Football" match and not the global sense of football as everyone else knows it

Had some Dutch friends (couple from Den Haag) who had an interesting experience in Harlem.

New York used to be called New Amsterdam as most of you probably know.
What you might not know is that entire upstate NY region was called "New Netherland" at one point:

In that above map, shaded in purple, there's a town called Swedesboro.
My former martial arts teacher lived in that area.

However, I never knew southern New Jersey was called New Sweden at one time.

    DAMN BELGIANS.

If you Dutchies beat Costa Rica, you have my full and upmost support. I gotta support the underdog and regional neighbor. That being said. Rooting for the Hunter to get on the score sheet again.

Gullit is 100% Amsterdam. He was born there, and lived there until he moved to Feyenoord.

Ajax approached Gullit too, at the age of 14/15 but his father blocked it and when Ajax returned at the age of 16 Ruud Gullit had a better feeling with the approach by Haarlem. Having played until the age of 16 at an amateur club. He made his debut as a defender by the way, not even an attacker.

I would feel much more comfortable if we faced Brazil, if we had De Jong to cover Oscar/Neymar coming through the middle. Those players like to dance through the midfield and hold onto the ball. De Jong could shut them down by just making the tackle. I can see them skipping away from most other players.

Assuming we would actually reach the final, which is.... Plausible. AND Brazil reach the final... Which....

Oh well, let's not jinx it!
