My take is that Mexico does have tall players however we lack better coaching to improve on these players which always get tagged as "Troncos." In this forum for many years The Borg was seen as a tronco and he is the national team's all-time leading goal scorer. I've mentioned the Maza story many times in the Chivas forum but he is a player that had it not been for Hans Westerhoff he would of rotted away in a second division club. He still is seen as a Tronco but there is no other defender besides Rafael Marquez that can equal his achievements. Mr Westerhoff was working on striker Isaac Romo (6'3) but once he was sacked the player was sent to Chivas USA and never fully developed. The same can be said of Roberto Nurse and countless others. Culturally we still favor the silky passing and fancy footwork which is cool but we shouldn't ignore the importance of having physically stronger, taller, players.
But the experiment is already on, I'd love to see stats about average heights of 1st gen immigrant kids in the US, alright let's just call them pochos (like me), vs the average height of kids in Mexico of the similar age. Good healthcare and adequate nutrition are the best determinants of adult height: "Much the same transformation has occurred in the Mexican-American population. Since the nineteen-twenties, the median height of Mexican-American teen-agers has nearly reached the United States’ norm." http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2004/04/05/040405fa_fact?currentPage=all
I hate watching these videos. Make me sad. Look how good Salcido was then and some nice passing down the middle
I'm a first generation Mexican American. I'm 6'4 my younger brother is 6'1 and my oldest brother is 5'11, my dad is 5'10 and my mom is 5'2, so yeah that american nutrition probably has something to do with it.
Yeah, it's definitely something to do with nutrition and diet. @mv670 we basically have identical measurements lol
Same. My cousins and myself are all 6ft or taller. My tallest cousin is 6'4. I think I was taller than my dad in like 7th grade lol.
LoL at all this height talk.. Please before we start mentioning height.. How about we mention Technique/Mental attributes first.. Seriously how many Guys do we have that are tactically good footballers and/or players with a high footballing IQ Scroll down our squad yourself and you'll find tactical/mental Black holes in almost all of the players .. Yet some of you want to be talking about "height"when we haven't even got the basics down... smh pendejos ...
Pele, Messi, Maradona, all laugh at your height. You don't have to be tall, you just have to be born in South America. Anyways, 5'9 GOAT height checking in.
Like @elvasco said, I'll believe it when Piojo writes his name with a permanent marker on the starting 11 list.
If everything had to do with height then Serbia would be at the top of the food chain in the world of futbol. Get real people.
I know right , look at all our possible wing backs they can't cross to save their life and there supposed to be the driving force of Herrera's 5-3-2 ....lmao! We need Players with better technique plain and simple ...
While it's true that malnutrition is detrimental to height, it has more to do with genetics. Human height is measured in quantity and is controlled by your genes and environmental factors. In developed countries, the importance of nutrition and healthy habits/lifestyle for children is strong, yet the heritability of height is roughly 80%, leaving 20% to dietary and healthy lifestyle. By using the parents' heights, heritability can be used to predict the son/daughters' eventual height. Let's use our friend, jcwkings, as an example, since he was kind enough to provide his parents' information. Father is 178-179 cm ( approx 5' 10"); mother is 157 cm (5' 2"). He did not mention whether he was indigenous, mestizo, or White, which is an enormous factor. He did admit that he was a 6' 4" pocho, so let's just assume that he's part of the master race. As we all know, in this forum you're either 6' 4" glorious White Mexican, or Luis Montes. In the US, the hereditary of height for White men is 80%. The average American male is roughly 177 cm; for women: 163 cm. This leaves us with the following formula: 0.80 x [(179 - 177) + (163 - 157)] / 2 Which equals 3.2 cm (so 179 + 3.2). Their male children's expected height should be around 182 cm, which should be close to 6' (remember, this is all assuming that jcwkings is pure Aryan blood). Environmental and nutritional effects can add 1.75 cm (the 20%). Somehow, jcwkings blew away the laws of science by over 10 cm! Judging by his siblings wildly varying heights, one can assume four possible outcomes: 1) His mother used to serve him human growth hormones along with his frijoles. 2) He's adopted. 3) His mother had an affinity for extraneous cock. 4) He's most likely full of sh|t.
Can't believe we are still posting about this loss... And other random thoughts on this thread. Bu the way, many studies focus on the major factor that nutrition plays, but parents genes are indeed one factor too. Portugal expected to be taller as a European team than most Latin America. Now moving on from the repeated height posts on this Portugal thread, This loss should help us temper expectations. Imagine the difference between portugals last goal and what Spain or Netherlands could do at will.
Pinche steroid infested "meat" that they serve at McDonalds has something to do with it. Almost nearly impossible to be 6'4, when your dad is only 5'10. That's just not normal.
