Thats what I thought. Is RSL still the only residency program in MLS? I thought Vancouver at least had one now.

We can't really compare HGP to super draft because there are another 70 or so USSF academies outside of MLS who are also working since 2007. Outside of that I'm noticing a lot of AYSO clubs hiring pros and practicing 2, 3 and even 4 times a week. The last few years have been a revolution in grass roots development and I expect interesting things across the board.

I think we're enough games in to start discussing who we think will play in the Chipotle Homegrown Player Game. I know we might play a 4-3-3 or something else but just for ease I'm going to list players in a diamond 4-4-2.

    Locks:
    Keeper: Bill Hamid
    Right Back: DeAndre Yedlin
    Center Back 1: Shane O'Neill
    Center Back 2: ???
    Left Back: Ashtone Morgan
    Defensive Midfielder: Wil Trapp
    Right Wing: ???
    Left Wing: Harrison Shipp
    Attacking Midfielder: ???
    Forward 1: Diego Fagundez
    Forward 2: ???

My best guess at this point:
    Center Back 2: Doneil Henry
Right Wing: Marco Delgado/Sean Okoli/Dillon Serna
Attacking Midfielder: One of the above listed as Right Wing? When will Tommy Thompson be healthy?
    Forward 2: Gyasi Zardes

Those are just my thoughts at this point and I believe all the listed players are eligible. If not feel free to correct me and if I missed anyone don't hesitate to point it out.

Attacking midfield could be Daniel Garcia, who's playing well there since the Mauro Diaz injury.......................

Is it a HGP Team A vs Team B or is there another opponent?

The site still says "stay tuned for the announcement of the team and their opponent" so it seems like they're trying to find a team outside MLS.

Rapids get 2nd HG goal with O'Neil scoring his first off a deep blast from poor corner clearance.

They should make it SuperDraft picks (college soccer only) against HGP to see which one is better. I guess they can limit it to anyone who is 24 and under. Right now the SuperDraft has developed the best players in MLS and even for the national team.

Power by numbers. Don't get me wrong, plenty of solid players went thru the draft and provided good options for the national team

But there have been way fewer academy players signed but that number is increasing. If the season continues the way it is an academy player may win the rookie of the year (and be chicago's only success this year :( ). We will have to wait and see but for now (and in the past) the draft has been a good source for the player pool

Powers is also an academy player. He just wasn't at an MLS Academy. Instead he went to Andromeda FC which is a fully funded USSF academy. AAMOF in 2009 he was Development Academy POTY along with FC Dallas' Ruben Luna.

    http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...named-development-academy-players-of-the-year

Remember there are 60+ non MLS academies doing the same training and playing in the same development leagues. Let's not quite dismiss the SuperDraft yet or be disappointed if HGPs don't dominate.

Super draft will always be important as mls academies will not be able to scout the whole of USA successfully. The usda will continue to provide players.

In most cases MLS academies are limited to a 75 mile area to recruit. So lots of people that will still need to be drafted.

Only those in larger markets. Some smaller markets like kc and rsl have a couple of states.

But then again u may see more teams like Chicago who hae affiliate clubs in other states (ie. Chicago has clubs missouri, Florida, Michigan, Indy and Louisiana I believe.)

Kellen gulley was signed via their Missouri team by including him in rosters despite not being in a 75mile radius. Wouldn't be surprised if they go after lindley from Indy (assuming he doesn't go abroad at 18).

MLS is trying to take steps to change that.

First off, expansion means more territory will be directly covered, and that there will be more academies. Having 3 teams in the south will go a long way toward filling in the gaps.

But I also think it's important to note that teams are allowed to sign out of market homegrown players. Some teams can only sign as few as 2 out of market homegrown players (like LA and NY) but many can have as many as 8 (RSL, Columbus, SKC). As a result you increasingly see teams affiliating with academies well outside of their 75 mile radius. Sporting KC was granted three whole states as home territory (Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri) and on top of having affiliates in those states, they also have affiliates in Minnesota, Tennessee and Nebraska.

Furthermore, I believe in the coming years more teams will move toward a residential academy model. If teams house players and take an active hand in their education, they can greatly increase the amount of practice time they get...and they can also recruit players nationally.

That being said, I agree that the draft will stick around. The US is a huge country, and even if every inch gets covered with affiliated MLS academies, there will be talented players that slip through the cracks, as well as late developing players. And while college isn't ideal for player development, it does provide a platform for kids to prove themselves.

Yes the draft will stick around, for every teenage washout there will always be a Graham Zusi or Geoff Cameron. However they need to take the name Super out of the Draft. It makes no sense to call it a SuperDraft.

The "Super" in SuperDraft refers to the fact that it was a combination of the College Draft and the Supplemental Draft, not anything to do with quality or importance.

I know that but it still sounds a bit out of place when you compare it to the NFL or NBA college drafts. I wish it was on that level but for the time being it is not. It is like calling the So Cal derby the Superclasico when it is nowhere near other derbies in other countries.

No one cares what the draft is called. No one except self righteous fools who think too much of themselves are going to get all worked up over the name of the draft and think that name has any bearing on what people think of it.

The MLS Draft will never be what other drafts are. It is different by nature. People will look at it for what it is and not base their opinion on it because of its name.

Because of course it is the "Super" Draft the most special of all the drafts. Better than the expansion and supplemental draft. I am a great fan of the "Super" Draft as it stocks MLS teams with its future stars but the name must change and IT WILL CHANGE whether you like it or not. Just like the SUPERCLASICO will eventually be no more.

Has anyone tabulated each clubs HG signings?

I know Rapids are at 3 (Serna, O'Neil, Armstrong)
Just read RSL Justen Glad was their 7th HG signing.

I Figure FC Dallas toppest the list but anyone have the numbers to back it up?

The wiki tracks current homegrowns, sortable by team.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homegrown_Player_Rule_(Major_League_Soccer)

Dallas does seem to have the most currently with 8. Not sure how often that's updated.

Will Parchman did a write up back in July tracking each team's use of home grown players:
