"Saint Louis Football Club: We Didn't Take As Much Time Announcing Our Name To People Who Will Never Buy Tickets To Our Games As Some Other Expansion Teams Did."
Saint Louis FC @SaintLouisFC 54m REMINDER: While the team name has been announced, we want YOU to choose the logo. Fan voting for the official #STLFC logo begins Wednesday!
No, I do not. I have just been hearing for eons about how great and wonderful St. Louisans are when it comes to soccer. It's a bit tedious, especially given the ennui that has greeted most recent clubs playing there. And now they have another braintrust that can't even be buggered to do an hour's work coming up with a name. And please don't tell me St. Louis invented that. Nonsense.
And as to the general point of the name itself, no, that's not a complaint for complaint's sake. It's a complaint based on this creeping b.s. that nothing in American soccer can possibly have value unless it parrots Europe. You have to put "FC" at the end of your city and be done with it, period, full stop, because that's "authentic." You don't have a logo, you have a badge or a crest. You don't have fans, you have supporters. It's nonsense. It shows a sense of insecurity on our part, that we can't be American because Euros will laugh at us. No one will even begin to be imaginative anymore, because what will the English think?
Every crossed your mind that maybe, just maybe, people in St. Louis like traditional-style names? Remember how much AC was touted around these boards and encouraged well before ACSTL actually announced its name? (Which, honestly, if you want to get your criticism correct, is more Italian than English, so no we really don't care what the English think. FC is so common, too, being Spanish and Russian and a whole host of other languages as well. It's international, and there's nothing wrong with it. I guess SC would be more appropriate here in the States, though.) That's not the ownership group selling out or "parroting" as you put it - they're playing to their potential fans. Just because you don't like traditional names/terms doesn't give you the right to sniff at what other fans prefer.
If Kenn knew anything, he would realize that SCOTT-GALLAGHER ST. LOUIS (SGSL) was formed by combining Scott-Gallagher and St. Louis, SC. (fka Busch Soccer Club) That created some hard feeling back then and was difficult for some to swallow. Some went to other clubs. This expansion team is affiliated with SGSL. But to be successful they need to appeal to all clubs. Thus, the simple return to St. Louis F/S. C. St. Louis SC is still a protected name so FC it is. Any soccer person in St. Louis understand where the name comes from. So, yes, Kenn is simply bitching to bitch.
Of course they only called themselves FC because they couldn't use Rowdies and now they can and have dropped the FC part from the preface. But I digress...
Yeah, I like the shield better as well - include the river and the Arch. And I've never really liked including dates.
Like the one on the right, but I'm usually bias towards circular badges. Also i find it interesting that St Louis and Louisville unveil logos on the same day and they by have the Fleur de Lis in them.
