I have a new hobby, rock climbing. Expensive? Yes. Fun? Hell yes. Great workout? Damn straight. Even if my arms feel like they're going to pop off at any rate. Doesn't help that a climbing place is 20 minutes away, either.

I recently gave it a shot, I have a rock gym 10 minutes away, and was trying to take on my life long fear of heights head on. it was a huge challenge mentally, and some real shaky moments, but I outdid all but one other person in my group. It was certainly rewarding in the end.

There's a place that 20 minutes away from me. I got into it through a friend of mine, plus the people are pretty chill. If you ever get into outdoor climbing, check out the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Place is climber's paradise, make sure you get lead certified, though.

It is fun isn't it? I hate going to conventional gyms but this is the most fun way and I've never had a problem with crowds.

I'm making a video with a bunch of pics and videos I took with a GoPro. Should be up when I get the time to edit.

yeah, besides the mental terror, I did have a great time. I've always been able to pickup athletic activities and sports quickly so by the end I was getting in a slight groove. Only been once so far, trying to get my GF motivated.

He's a tennis player. Wants to move to a higher ranked school somewhere a little livelier. I think he's outgrown his current school a little.

    Studies Business/Finance.

Serious question, but does he have any strong political leanings? If he's more liberal or more conservative it can have a very different impact on the university experience (Denver and Oregon being far more liberal schools and the others being southern are more conservative).

It's obviously not a universal truism, but it could be a big factor.

Denver is downtown. Nice small school.

Clemson is a monster football school but Clemson, SC is small, not much there besides the uni.

If he's looking for a good time, Oregon is likely it. Eugene is a party town in every sense of the word. It's dirty, but it's a college town.

Haven't been to Mississippi State before.

Georgia Tech is in Atlanta. Great school. Engineering school though, so there isn't a party scene like some of the others, but it's in a major city.

In all honesty I'd be surprised if he could tell me which UK parties were either side of the spectrum. Has no interest that I'm aware of in the slightest. Based on his lifestyle I'd have him down as a liberal mind ...

He's favouring Denver and Clemson I believe.

I couldn't comment on the academic side, but Eugene Oregon has a great reputation for a fun campus (it's 20 miles south of Portland which is awesome) and would definitely qualify as being suitable for a more liberal mind.

    But those Southern girls.........

Heh, what is the Southern girls bit implying?

He's currently in Tennessee and seems to have had his fair share of fun. But at the same time they sounds like mentalists.

@Blueallthru really sums it up well

I have been to Clemson a few times and it is quite a sports mad town/university. The College (American) Football games present a fantastic atmosphere and are worth going to. Nice campus and a lot of fun to be had there. As previously mentioned there is not a lot to do in the town itself as it pretty much serves the campus but it is in a decent location and in a good drive to several different parts of the South- be it the mountains in the Carolinas or Tennessee or along the Carolina coast and not to far from Atlanta.

Georgia Tech is located in Atlanta where there is a lot to do but it really is in downtown Atlanta which could be a good or bad thing based on transportation. Very good academic school and a pretty well athletically supported school as well. Being in Atlanta offers another location near several surrounding areas and of course is a major hub to get in and out of.

I enjoyed both of my visits to Clemson and Ga. Tech and think a decision between the two would vary in terms of fun vs education with those two.

I had a friend who went to Mississippi State which can be politely described as a very Southern school. I believe they have some good programs in engineering. From the description I received it sounded a lot like Clemson with a lot less to do and (ahem) a lot less to look at it if you catch my drift.

Heard good things about Denver which has a young, cool crowd but am only really familiar with the UC- Boulder. The same with Oregon which is supposed to be a real fun place with the primary issue being the weather but being English he will be used to that.

He's been visiting all this week and has plumped for Denver. I think I'll have to pay him a visit.

    Thanks y'all.
