Does anyone have any knowledge of when and if the Cosmos plan on starting an official academy? I think this step is second most important behind the stadium.
They have people charged with forming the early stages of a youth development set up. But its early days, probably going to be 2-3 years before they can get a functioning academy at 2-3 age levels up and running.
Agreed, a good academy system is key to a teams success. It not only works as a feeder system, it also gets kids and their families involved with the club hopefully forming a bond that brings them to support the team long term. Look no further than the Red Bulls academy, they have one of the best in the country and it's working well for them. They offer training sessions for kids starting at U6, they are all over Jersey, 5 boroughs, and L.I. Eventually at 13 yo I believe they pick the best for their academy. Hope the Cosmos can get something similar going.
Interesting enough, that system was first put together by Giovanni Saverese in as a youth development system then slowly turned into a -18 and U-16 team. The entire foundation of that academy was built by Gio, and our good friends at Red Bull when they bought the club decided to fire him and hire a guy that lied on his application. They improved it since. But yeah, that is where Cosmos are heading, it just takes a but of time to get it up and running full stop.
Too bad the last version of Cosmos management did such a poor job with Blau Weiss Gottschee. That would have been a great resource now. More info: http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/article.php?article_id=29140
It's a good thing then that Sela and the NY Cosmos actually honored their relationship with Blau Weiss Gottschee and all was settled after Kemsley, so that link above is moot. Furthermore, the NY Cosmos went a step ahead and not simply partnered with a youth club but the very league that club participated in. In addition the New York Cosmos have created the intricate Training and Development Program (TDP). http://www.nycosmostdp.com/ Here is a list of New York Cosmos youth partners: http://www.nycosmos.com/youth-partners Brooklyn Chernomorets: http://www.chernomorets.org/ Northport: http://www.nycsl.org/ Sachem Youth Soccer Club: http://www.sysl.org/ Massapequa Soccer Club: http://www.massapequasc.com/ Craig Carton's TTS Soccer Stars: http://www.nycosmos.com/article/uui...announced-with-craig-cartons-tts-soccer-stars Play Study Win/Metro Soccer NY: http://www.nycosmos.com/article/uui...rtnership-with-play-study-win-metro-soccer-ny And the NY Cosmos still have affiliation with the Cosmos Soccer Camps: http://cosmoscamps.com/ I say, so far this is a good core of Youth Development being done by the NY Cosmos with much more to come.
One more youth partner: NY Club Soccer league: http://www.nycosmostdp.com/Default.aspx?tabid=362203&mid=387422&newskeyid=HN1&newsid=4593&ctl=newsdetail http://www.nycosmos.com/article/uuid/va3xeoxwychh1wo61cjr1y9rb/cosmos-agree-to-partner-with-new-york-club-soccer-league
Your too sensitive. My point was that Kemsley's Cosmos had a good thing going and blew it. Which is too bad, imagine what would Cosmos academy be like today had they fostered not annihilated that relationship. At the very least, Cosmos would probably have several homegrown players playing right now on the 1st team.
Really nowhere near it. You jump to conclusions rather quickly based on random personal assumptions (which is steering off the topic at hand). FYI: Kemsely was only with the Cosmos organization from 2010-2011; about a year and a half. It was brief. Cosmos developed new academies by late 2010 and 2011. With new (realigned) ownership by 2011, those academies were strategically phased out by 2012-13 for a future redevelopment of the entire program. By 2013, less than a year (less than six months) later, new partnerships emerge with one of the oldest and biggest youth leagues in the country, as well as a new youth league that is gaining vast momentum in the NY metropolitan area. Cosmos also establish relationships with seven specific youth programs. And the Cosmos design the Training and Development Program (TDP). Today, the Cosmos youth system is blossoming like never before with vast reach that is connecting youths in and around the NYC area. The foundation is being set to continue the program's growth. Things are looking quite good thus far. Based on this statement, you're suggesting that from about three and half years ago to now the Cosmos should have had a real homegrown player or several for the 1st team... That is saying much... There are teams that would "tutelage" a player for a year or two and pass that player off as "homegrown". But traditional homegrown players, like those found in Europe and other parts of the world, are those that start young (5-12 years old) at an academy and are with a club from anywhere between 5-10 years or longer. Of course, this is all anyone's perspective. Besides this, just to shed further light, the Cosmos did have an u-23 team in 2011. The u-23 was part of the Cosmos overall youth academy. Both Stefan Dimitrov and Dane Murphy formed part of the team. And today they are part of the NY Cosmos 1st team. Even more so, to alleviate part of your concern, David Diosa played for the NY Cosmos u-18 back in 2010, and later U-23 in 2011. He was the first graduate of the Cosmos academy. Today, and since 2013, he is part of the NY Cosmos 1st team. All in all, the Cosmos are doing very well in terms of youth development. With each day that passes, the organization is helping train many of the young talent in the area. It is a very promising endeavor. In time we will see more and more growth by the club and its future young players.
Seems like the area teams are alignment w/ youth programs from where their fan bases are located/expected to be. Not a bad thing at all. It amazes me that we all love the game, but we want the other to fail, not 1 v. 1 on the pitch but as an organization & league. But guess what, at this stage, it a league of hi profile teams fails, it will be a drag on everyone.
To be honest I don't feel any kind of way about NYCFC as an organization, fact is it'll be more competition for all. I do feel badly about losing Blue Weiss Gottschee to NYCFC, at one time they were part of our academy, they're very good at what they do. They operate in Queens and BK so really it could be considered Cosmos territory.
You don't think it is relevant to the Cosmos Academy thread that a renowned academy formerly engaged with the Cosmos has signed up with NYC FC?
FYI: For anyone's clarity, the Cosmos are affiliated with the entire Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) and do collaborate with all the clubs (approximately 40) in it. http://www.cjslsoccer.com/home.html http://www.nycosmos.com/article/uuid/1kq8iqwjadq8n17tahdti8vlha/cosmos-enter-partnership-with-cjsl
true, but all 3 pro organiztion will benefit from each other's involvement, as academy competition will be better & well organized & to be fair development is costly when u may get justa few pllayers after yrs & $$ invested, Better to have 3 pro organization developing players in the area than 1. What do u think?
Yes, the ones that benefit the most though are the kids who will have these teams competing to develop talent in Such a small yet heavily populated area. I'm not sure how it works when let's say the Cosmos have a very talented prospect, and NYCFC wants to take the kid, is there anything stoping them from signing him?
Yes it's relevant, but you must have forgotten how things roll around here if non-Cosmos posters smell any blood or Cosmos fans read "NYCFC". Call it a precautionary warning.
This is a good first step towards stablishing a strong academy system. http://www.nycosmos.com/article/uui...director-of-training-and-development-programs Fitzgerald is named director of training and development programs, he's currently director of coaching for the LIJSL Academy pograms, he brings a great deal of connections to all the clubs affiliated with the LIJSL. This will help not only with player development, but it may also help bring people to the stadium in the long run.
