OK, several years of poor results, then a year with success, and now what? If there are a couple of successful signings, it might be a new, better way of doing business. Or, if it's back to the old ways, it looks like that success was the exception, not the rule.

We will know soon enough which one it is.

Random question for anyone knowledgable about development programs around MLS.

I was talking with someone recently about the need for younger development and scouting in the US to identify and predict future pros. We're talking 7-9 year olds. I didn't think this was very common in MLS today; he seemed to think it was. Did a quick google search and could only find a couple examples of "Pre-Academies" - Houston and DC.

Does anyone know if any other MLS clubs have youth teams younger than 13? Thanks.

 

Agreed. So, its silly for people to be acting as if he doesn't have a clue.

Probably no one, for a few reasons:
- he's not very long out from under the shadow and influence of Steve Nicol
- the recent improvement of the team is still only limited progress. It needs to continue for a couple of more seasons.
- for whatever reason, the record with foreign acquisitions for this organization is subpar

Well, I disagree on most points: they are chock full of young players and only in the 2nd half of last season really settled into a formation and lineup. Just about every player on the roster has good reason to be improved over last season, and team chemistry, confidence and knowledge all start from a much more advanced point than last year.

As for the captain, regardless of whether he wants more money, I hardly expect that to affect his performance (malingering is certainly no way to get a better contract).

And, what promise did they break with him exactly? After the facts finally did come out, it turned out that he is quite well paid by MLS standards.

I know we all like exciting new signings, me included, but that's not really the metric IMO. The improvement of the team is (just for a crazy example, what if Bengtson turns into the player we expected him to be - then Burns is looking smaat for not trading/selling/dumping him).

Belichick has always wanted a field that favors his team as much as possible. When the Pats were moving to become a more and more pass-oriented team, he wanted a faster field.

 

Wrong. NFL while they say the didn't mandate the mandate was going to be coming soon. If the switch was made during the 2007 offseason you would have a point. But it was made with 3 games home left in 2006 with a team that was more benefiting a slower,muddy chewed up field.

 

This whole "new field" thing reminds of when they put the new JumboTrons in at Gillette and tried to spin it like it had something, anything to do with the Revs. Just like the big new screens, it doesn't.

Henry only plays on one turf field, Jeld-Wen...er, Providence Park in Portland because it was designed for soccer with an extra, cushioning "e-layer." Doubt that's what's going down at Gillette, so Foxboro will remain TH14 free in '14.

I'm not familiar with all the places where these are being held, but a lot of them sure sound like they might be on the bar/nightclub/restaurant planet. The "church" you are referring to is the Berkeley Church in Toronto, which indeed would fit into the above category as a function hall, party rental place. The building used to be a church back in the old days, but I bet there are some pretty un-churchlike things going on there just about every weekend.

KC has gone all cultural on us, holding theirs at an art museum. I wonder if Ivan McKinley's left foot is going to show up.

 

Royale Boston is not typical nightclub. It is a music venue. And a decent place to hold a ALL Ages event in the City

 

I did not guess; looked them up to be sure. Not many are clubs.

 

And Miami Vice as a name? That's about as weak as it gets and reeks of 1996. And you'd think that a limey bastard like Beckham would be familiar with the commonly used term for tthe second-place team - Vice Champion, so if he doesn't mind being [Premiership announcer voice]Second-best at the end of the day, the look on that young man's face says it all...bitter disappointment. It's a club/music/event venue on a Tuesday night. This is their one event for the night. It's an all ages event. There's nothing to complain about.

Does anyone have any info on a new "ASL"? The Lynn Item reports that Mass United is a charter member, but the ASL web page is pretty sparse.

Honestly I think they get more compliments in the Customer department than they do the complaints. Just look at twitter in any given day on the #nerevs hash tag. So I think they think they are doing a bang up job.
