Why are all these women changing their names all of a sudden? When I saw Rachel Van whatever the heck her name is now, I was like who the eff is that?

Honestly she could call her self Rachel Van Football Extraordinaire and still suck as a defender!

especially when you're trying to build up the tiny fan base of the niche game that provides your livelihood.... i don't get why it's necessary. this is the 21st century.

but we've had these discussions before....

I doubt Rachel Bueualakgjiituelagiauwler will be on the national team much longer.
I doubt that last name will be on a jersey at the 2015 WWC.
I see the 21 player WWC roster (at this moment) looking like this ..........

F - Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Sydney Leroux, Christen Press
MF - Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, Lauren Holiday, Carli Lloyd, Shannon Boxx, Erika Tymrak, Morgan Brian
D - Kelley O'Hara, Ali Krieger, Crystal Dunn, Krstie Mewis, Christie Rampone, Whitney Engen, Beck Sauerbrunn
GK - Hope Solo, Nicole Barnhart, Adrianna Franch (after another great season in NWSL)

And if they're that concerned about DM depth, then Julie Johnston might make it.
But Rachel Bueualakgjiituelagiauwler will probably not be on that roster.
Players like Dunn and Mewis can play at least 2 or 3 different positions, and that puts them on the roster.

Franch is next cycle. They wouldn't call up another guardian if she was fighting Loyden for the 3rd spot. They'll never bring her in that late, end of 2014. Loyden is on because she makes Solo happy.

Mewis > Kling or Cox. Now, that's funny. Gotta love the inner workings of USSoccer.

Don't they keep 4 center backs. He just said a balance of youth and vets. Van Bepepeodellrlfdso isn't going anywhere.

I'm not saying that I would put Mews in the 21, if it were up to me, I'm saying she'll be there because she can play multiple positions, and for some reason Sermanni really seems to like here. She's always called up.
Cox and/or Klingenberg would have to set the world on fire to unseat her.

O'Reilly may make the roster as well, but I think they want to develop Tymrak and Brian.
It may be Shannon Boxx "or" Julie Johnston, and probably not both.
If Boxx isn't there, I think Johnston gets in over Averbuch.

I really do think Averbuch and Bueualakgjiituelagiauwler are on the outside looking in, for 2015.
There's just too much depth in the midfield, and Averbuch is a tweener there.
Julie Johnston's versatility could be utilized as an emergency backup at DM, or as a 4th center-back.
So she may make the roster over someone else, even if Boxx is there, if they want an emergency 4th center-back.

Johnson doesn't even get call ups. Another brand/recognizable name getting hyped. Mewis has been played in multiple positions but doesn't play any of them that well. Much love for her over at USSoccer.

No way he will make wholesale changes in late 2014. i think what you have seen is pretty much what you'll get from him. He'll do his normal lip service in interviews like Press is a predatory striker but stick her in the mid-field. Now, that makes sense.

Anyway, I got Van Bdoodooleuud on the final roster with Loyden.

With all the criticism Rachel Van Hobgoblin is taking I'm getting fonder of her. She's pretty and one of the smartest players on the team. (Rapinoe once said Barnhardt was the smartest -- after herself, of course). And Van H. is a pretty good defender. Rampone apparently likes her at her side. I haven't seen anybody better at centerback except Sauerbrunn -- and Becky and Rampone are not error free.

Anyway, I think Buehler is likely to be on the WC team. Unless Klingenberg or Engen really show up big time.

The wings are interesting to me. Maybe Cox and Dunn can give O'Hara, Krieger, and Mewis a run for their money.

I hate when people changes names just because they marry.
Or for any reason actually, but I work with IT support and is one of the people to have to change those name in all of our IT systems so I am not very objective on that issue..

Not to mention Bueualakgjiituelagiauwler doesn't fit in most data fields...

At least she hasn't been called 'la Loca' for 500 years....

Juana's married last name was Habsburg-Burgundy de Transtámara de Madrigal de Altas Torres .

Try fitting that on the back of a Jersey.

Anything is better than the name Buehldozer.
If she played basketball, she would lead the league in charging calls.

I noticed that although Farrelly and McDonald are listed on the roster on the Thorns website, they are not listed on the roster at the NWSL website. The Thorns website roster has 22 players listed, which is two above the limit. I wonder if there's any significance to the two that are missing from the NWSL website -- although I'm guessing it means only that they are not yet under contract.

Which brings up a question: How does the contracting work during the pre-season, before the rosters are finalized? Are teams limited to 20 players at a time under contract? If a team can have more than 20 players under contract, what does the standard contract say about the League's ability to terminate it if the player doesn't make the team?

EDIT: After a further check of the NWSL website, a good number of the teams have more than 20 players listed on their rosters. If being listed on a roster at the NWSL website means a player is under contract to the League (except perhaps for the allocated players, who may be under contract to their federations), then perhaps Farrelly and McDonald are not yet under contract. This is conceivable.

It also raises another interesting question. I believe the deadline for the League/Teams to exercise the second year option on the non-allocated players' contracts was some time after the 2013 League Championship game, and was well before now. Presumably, the League/Teams did not exercise their options on a significant number of players since it seems like that would have maxed out their rosters and foreclosed the addition of college draft players and discovery players to their rosters. So, which players did not have their options exercised? Do players whose options were not exercised still appear on the teams' website rosters? Do they still appear on the NWSL website rosters?

According to reports, the Thorns are pursuing another international, whom Riley has coached in the past. Does anyone know what internationals he's coached?

Great story on Shim here http://www.oregonlive.com/portland-...orns_lively_and_tou.html#incart_river_default

What struct me in this article is how close she came to quitting when she was drafted by Houston.

There is a reality here that this league must face if it wants to be successful. Success doesn't begin or end with the NT players but rather on the large group of quality players that form the backbone of every team. I'm talking about the Lohmans, Longs, Weimers, Kerrs, Bucz, etc that have been part of failed leagues in the past but yet do not get discourage (re. Ali Riley) and are willing to give new leagues a try.

Teams will be wise to do all they can to make themselves attractive to these players in other ways because we all know the pay is not going to be attractive.

What strikes me is if she was really going to quit soccer just cause she was drafted by Houston, then it makes all the paragraphs in the article about her dedication to the sport seem rather hollow.

Wow, Riley didn't leave a roster spot for a local girl. What happen to the grassroots and local thing with the league? I'm guessing the alternates are local. Win @ all cost Portland.

are you bipolar? you went on and on about the Nats and how we should expect players to be just like everywhere else in the world.

now winning at all costs is an issue?

I'd be pretty disappointed if they weren't trying to win at all costs. besides, Kerr has lived in Portland for about 8 years now and went to school here, and Sinclair calls Portland home since 2001.
