Ok, these are the ones that I know of: Gimnasia y Esgrima (La Plata) - Argentina - 1887 Quilmes - Argentina - 1887 Rosario Central - Argentina - 1889 Peñarol - Uruguay - 1891 Santiago Wanderers - Chile - 1892 Flamengo - Brasil - 1895 Nacional - Uruguay - 1899 Any of you know of other clubs formed in the late 1800s regardless of division?
hey guys what is the oldest club in peru or venezuela? Colombia: It must be Millos or santa Fe DIM was from 1913- 90 yrs old only
There is some city in south Chile that was settled by Germans in the 1880's that still has a team. I dont remember the name of the town, nor the team, but I particularly remember watching a documentary about Chile earlier this year and finding that interesting, as that city speaks German still, and the population is pretty much the same make up over the past century. I'm sure a Google search will find the asnwers
I also recall that the brutal ruler Pinochet, gave them paved roads with tax payers money from other regions! But, the name scape my memory, I did not know about the futbol team.
I believe it is Alianza Lima, founded on February 15, 1901 followed by Cienciano founded on July 8, 1901. I couldn't get any info on the teams from the second division though so there may be an older club hidden somewhere in the lower divisions, although I doubt it.
well Venezuela has suffered to have long standing clubs because before there was absolutly no support... now there is a little but sadly we still see now a days clubs dissapearing... so I can only account for those who still exist... surprsingly to many, the oldest club is Deportivo Italchacao... but, not with this name... Deportivo Italchacao came about the merging of two clubs: Deportivo Chacao and Deportivo Italia. The latter was the club founded in 1948... Deportivo Italchacao as is has no more then 6 or 7 years... the order after that in the first division is: Estudiantes de Merida - 1971 Deportivo Tachira - 1974 Mineros de Guayana and Trujillanos - (both) 1981 Caracas FC - 1984 Carabobo FC - 1995 Union Atletico Maracaibo, Monagas SC and UA El Vigia - 2001 second division: Union Lara - 1999 Deportivo Anzoategui - 2002 I'll try to find out the other second division ones... but it's very hard
Club de Regatas Lima is Peru's oldest members club, which recently celebrated its 128th anniversary. I think this is correct, but I don't know if they ever had a soccer side. Reportedly, they can compete in over 40 sports, especially known for their remo and basketball. I will look for more.
Paraguay's leading club Football was introduced to Paraguay by William Paats, a Dutch teacher. Olimpia were the first club to be founded and had to wait a year before they had any domestic opposition, losing 1-0 to Club Guarani. The domestic championship got under way in 1906, and although Olimpia had to wait six years for their first title, once they had got off the mark they were hard to stop. They have been Paraguay's leading club ever since. http://www.uefa.com/competitions/EUSA/news/Kind=8192/newsId=44627.html
The oldest? Associação Atlética Ponte Preta 11 de Agosto de 1900 Brasil then... Fluminense, Brazil's oldest club, was founded in Rio in 1902 by the city's white, Anglophile elite.
Food for thought A bit off topic, but this may make you think as to why soccer seems so new in regards to the overall history of the world, no? ...from this website In Argentina the game was introduced by the English residents in Buenos Aires, and the AFA was based on 1891. Nevertheless, it rooted with certain slowness and in the end those were the Italian emigrants that matched popular. Chile formed its federation in 1895, Uruguay in 1900 and Paraguay in 1906. The British influence in South America is evident in the names of some clubs: Corinthians in Brazil, Everton and Rangers in Chile, Liverpool and Wanderers in Uruguay, River Plate and Newell's Old Boys in Argentina. To think, the USA (due to immigration, too) may have a longer history of "club soccer" than South America. The Oneida club of Boston was based on 1862, and the national selection reached the semi-finals in the World Cup of 1930 (in Africa?). Finally, consider this... In 1904 FIFA was founded. By 1992, the FIFA had 179 members.
Re: The oldest? Hmm..I guess you're right. I thought it was Flamengo (1895), but I went to their website and found out the futbol team wasn't started until 1911. I guess they were a rowing/cricket type club before that.
yeah, lets talk about futbol clubs only by membership or coorporation.... what about atletico nacional y Millonarios de Bogota?
Atletico Nacional apareció por los lados de 1940 como UNION, luego se junto con indulana, y formaron UNION INDULANA, luego se llamaron Atletico Municipal, y por ultimo, el nombre actual
peru cienciano was also formed in 1901 i think ciclista lima is from the 1800 but it disspaerad of the sporting map in the eraly 90's
Re: Food for thought A first World Cup will be held in Africa in 2010, probably South Africa. In 1930, they played in Uruguay, and it was won by the local team. The game was already an olimpic game and Uruguay was one of the latest champion.
The oldest club in South America is in Peru. Is called Lima Cricket and Football Club and was founded in 1859 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lima_Cricket_and_Football_Club
Chile: Santiago Wanderers 1892, followed by Union Espanola 1897, and Magallanes 1897 (Second division).
cricket? pero eso no existe este siglo! cual sera el mas viejo de los 11 o 12 que aun compiten en el torneo de primera en Peru?
Were Quilmes, Rosario Central and G&E La Plata all founded as football clubs? I know both Peñarol and Santiago Wanderers were and am pretty sure I'd read that at least Gimnasia was not founded as a footy club but later added the sport.
Not sure about the others, but Penarol didn't separate from CURCC (Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club) as a futbol club until 1913, while the original cricket club lasted until 1915, so they both at one point were existing simultaneously. Nevertheless, CURCC is recognized as being Penarol and vice versa.
