Amazingly a win and a draw in the last two matches will still put this club through!

If you beat Steau and Basel lose next matchday you qualify

Never understood the acquisition he has always shown that he does not have the quality to play for a team the fighting for the top of the table

He wasn't exactly acquired to help this club fight for the top of the table, he was brought in because this formerly solid position became rather thin somehow a few years back.

Yes, this position could and probably should have been upgraded during the off season...even so, I think we can now agree that the money spent elsewhere was more than necessary.

If you guys make it out of your group, will the club be able to spend some money in the winter window?

Heldt has said we won't, but I don't know. With all the injuries...

I think we could afford a good goalkeeper, but I don't think we could afford a good German goal keeper. Speaking German is pretty important at that position.

Question for anyone that might know: Do clubs carry any sort of insurance for injured players? That seems like it would make sense. A few injured players can really derail a season.
    I think we could afford

Time to buy a new goalkeeper in the summer. The 2 best up-and-coming German goalkeepers are Horn and Vlachodimos. Whoever of the two Heldt buys wont be a mistake.
Kevin Trapp is great too but I dont think Eintracht would agree to sell him.

I'm not sure if there is an insurance for player injuries for clubs. It is probably too expensive anyway. What is different in Germany, compared to a lot of a other countries, is, that players' salaries aren't guaranteed in case of a longer injury. The social safety net jumps in after an employee has been out sick for more than six weeks continuing paying the salary (or a part of it) but the payments only go to up to a couple of thousand euros a month. There is insurance for this, which continues paying the full salary or at least more than otherwise, but players have to get it themselves.

Unnerstall is no improvement over Hildebrand at all, neither is Fährmann. I'm pretty sure Heldt will try to find a better solution for goalkeeper in the summer (f.e. Baumann) unless some other glaring holes open up suddenly, which of course will....

With Bayern's midfield already so crammed, I wonder if Schalke could change Rode's mind. Adding him and a Baumann/Trapp this break or over the summer would be really solve a lot of issues and at that point bolstering your depth would be all you had left to worry about.

Right, and soon we're going to need a Jermaine Jones replacement anyway because he's gone this summer. With Hoeger out for the season, the Rode move would make sense.

Why not in the winter especially if you make it into the CL knockout and also to help with making the CL next season

Bruchhagen said on that Rode will go to Bayern. No need to discuss it any further although he would have fit in nicely.

That's too bad. I don't know what we'll do if Jones has surgery.

But Schalke is consistently disappointing. So don't hang your hopes too high. ^^

So with the Aogo injury and Jones suspension, do Boateng and Neu play the double pivot against Basel next week? I feel like a Kolasinac/Neu pairing with Fuchs at LB is extremely risky.

Neither Kola nor Fuchs had a great game this weekend. I supposed you could put Boateng next to Neu and have Meyer, Draxler, Farfan, and Szalai up front.

I think I'm more curious what lineup we use this week. Will Goretzka or Clemens get game time?

Glad this thread will be continuing for a while! :)

Is my math wrong, or is this the club's 4th visit to the knockout stage in 6 tries?

Me too. In the end, Dortmund had a tougher go of it than we did. They were minutes away from the Europa League.

I can't believe how good Basel's keeper is. Can we buy him? :)

    That appears to be correct.

So we can't play Dortmund, Bayern, or Chelsea, so our possible opponents are Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, and Atletico Madrid. I don't see us going anywhere with that field.

ManU doesn't exactly make a team fearful to face them the way they are performing.

You actually had been linked to him before the Giefer announcement, but I think he goes to Gladbach to replace ter Stegen because of the Swiss connection with Favre and Xhaka.

They are chasing that CB Schär as well.
