It's a fact that soccer is least popular in the confederate states and most popular in the liberal states.

Good to know. Do you want to share any other random facts?

Which explains why soccer is popular in Texas.

Only in areas with lots of urbanites, universities, and immigrants. i.e., not "Real Americans".

Right. Those are demographics that are more soccer-friendly.

You're not really adding new information to this discussion.

What obesity rates have to do with what sport you're a fan of is a mystery to me.

    You're a ********ing idiot.
    Which one is Nagodoches?

Further, why is Ohio (which is blue by a rather small margin) a rather large hotbed for both soccer AND football? Why is it that the most angry, peevish anti-soccer folks in VERY blue NE Ohio tend to be the most partisan of Democrats, and most of the people in my leagues who play for the love of the game are either hardcore SoCons or apolitical?

The immediate discussion was about conservatives and soccer in USA. My posts pertain to that.

Let me break it down in bite-sized pieces.

Soccer is unforgiving for fat people.
It's unlikely you'll be a fan of a sport if you don't enjoy playing it.
Being conservative has a high correlation with being fat.
By your own admission, demographics who lean progressive are also correlated with being soccer-friendly.

    Clear now?

Very well though out comment offering deep insight, reflecting positively on your analytical skills.

Because nothing has a correlation of 1.
There are atheist environmentalist vegetarian liberals in rural east Texas and bible-thumping gun toting immigrant hating rapid conservatives in San Francisco.
So your personal anecdotes mean nothing.

Thanks. It was at least as useful as your less-than-superficial posting of three pictures.

Problem for you is that it's more than just my personal anecdotes. Correlation means jack ********ing shit when you're talking this subject because it's pretty damn random.

    @Timon19

Before this goes any further I want to just clarify your position. Do you agree that Soccer has a bigger following among people with Liberal Political views, or do you think that is BS (as in cow manure not big soccer).

    Ok.
So are hockey, basketball and (for most positions), football. There are plenty of fat fans of those sports.
That's not even remotely true. Only a small percentage of fans of any sport play that sport. Women make up 36% of the fans of the NHL. How many of them do you think have ever picked up a hockey stick?
No, it doesn't. One of the major drivers of obesity in so-called red states is that many of them (especially in the south) have large populations of minorities, who have higher obesity rates than whites (and vote Democrat). Utah, Georgia, Wyoming and Montana are some of the most conservative states in the Union, and the white people there (who vote GOP in large percentages) have similar overweight/obesity rates as white folks in California and Connecticut.

Obesity is a complex problem in the US, but its causes have nothing to do with political views.
    Sure. So what?

I'm not him, but I'll answer. Over the world, soccer is decidedly right wing. In the United States, I think it's pretty even politically, maybe more left leaning.

Okay but I think Glenn Beck disagrees with you.

I think there is something to the idea that being willing to follow a sport that is, not american, where the best players and teams are not American, comes from a world view supported by Liberals more than conservatives in this country. Not exclusively of course but in general.

In my experience most of the people know who follow soccer are of the Libertarian/ Right wing variety. YMMV.

Which is exactly the opposite experience I have had in the US. And most of the hostility I have had have been from people who associate Soccer with Europe, and have a general dislike/distrust of anything European.

An anecdotal story is as I was leaving the Loftus stadium in Pretoria after the US-Algeria game the chant from the US fans (eventually joined by the local South Africans) was of Obama, Obama, followed by "Yes we can". Again one story but was inline with my own personal experiences. Again in the US.

Glenn Beck hates soccer--but so does Cenk Uygur.

Why do you suppose this matters to me? Glenn Beck is mostly a dipshit.

This presupposes that "Liberals" (whatever that means) are not similarly prone to xenophobia, which is, quite frankly, horseshit. One of the biggest groups to kill the Cleveland MLS bid were protectionist unions and their affiliated groups. The second biggest group was suburban, white, wealthy, "cultured", "liberal" NIMBYs.

I think the tide has turned on soccer haters. I think there are now a lot less of them but a ton more soccer snobs. Everything they rightfully hated about soccer bashers and bashing of the sport, they gave turned around and bash every other sport.

Seen a lot of it the last 2 weeks during the World Series. People I consider friends who I know like soccer only trashing on me for loving the Red Sox. How can I watch that boring sport. I say if you don't want your favorite sport bashed, don't do it others.

True but there is a difference between someone thinking soccer is boring and dumb. And thinking it is a communist plot designed to infiltrate America through sports.

But as @Timon19 points out Glenn Beck is a dipshit.

I don't know what was dumber- Uygur's anti-soccer article, or the pro-soccer comments to the article.
