Thread for "off-topic" news in Brasil. Does anyone know whats going on in Santa Cantarina lately? 27 buses set on fire, PMs being shot at, and other ridiculous shit going on in citys throughout the state. The weird thing is that every report I read, the motives behind all this aren't revealed. 1) Why are so many people doing this? 2) How are they continuing to do this? 3) Why are so many people partaking in it? (45 have already been apprehended for suspicion of contributing) 4) Why isnt it a bigger story?
I'm not sure about the other states, but I can speak for mine. In the capital of my state, MG, there has a large wave of violence that has been caused by a drug war that erupted between rival cartels since at least the middle of this year. Some police have been murdered or wounded retaliation from cartel members for attempting to combat them or perhaps for involvement in the drug trade, similar to what has happened in RJ and SP over the years.
This one is a little old, but it's a trial program initiated to rehabilitate prisoners currently in Maximum Security prisons by knocking off up to 5 days for every book they read with a written report about it. http://opiniaoenoticia.com.br/opiniao/governo-quer-transformar-presos-em-devoradores-de-livros/ I have no idea if this will have a positive effect or be a complete failure, but I love the willingness and courage to try something out of the norm. Here in the States, there are way too many naysayers not only in politics but overall as a population. If an intelligent person comes along and has the balls to consider a change in approach, even when the current approach is broken badly, they are shot down and ridiculed by people without ANY answers themselves. These are the people that love to point out the negative and chop down others. Instead of trying new approaches they keep on the same path and hope for different results because they have no balls or creativity to take a chance themselves. The progress or breakthroughs will never happen without a willingness to go against the grain. /Political rant over
A little comedy is in order after today. Dude tries to rob a restaurant by climbing through the oven ducts and gets stuck, sliced up, and taken to the ER. Isso e' o jeito brasileiro pra roubar? rsrs http://g1.globo.com/sc/santa-catari...ebook&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Pesquisa
Its hard enough going to school for the regular citizens so I imagine there is not much for the prisoners.
(Sorry, I couldn't help myself, but the thread is serious) For those who care or are Catholic, there seems to be two possible candidates for the papacy. Vatican released white smoke indicating they have chosen a new Pope. This is probably the best chance a Brazilian has had to becoming a pope, but I feel it'll end up being an European again.
Yep. Most said it wouldn't be a South American, so at least he proved those people wrong. He seems to be a good person, we will see what changes he makes.

I mean that's all well and good but Brazil was ranked like 150 in internet speed lol. I mean Joe Kony can get just as fast internet in a jungle than someone could in Sao Paulo at times. Plus the companies with internet suck there was one in sao Bernardo and I had to wait 2 'days" for someone to come fix the internet. Each day they would say between 10-- and 12 then at the end of the second day we just called up and threatened to cancel, then oddly enough the internet started working without anyone making a visit... wtf I like brazil's stance but the internet there is a joke to start with.
I know the U.S. was at fault, and I know there are many things wrong with this country. But it's sad for me to see Brasil(principally Dilma and Lula) aligning itself more and more with the chinas, russias, Cubas, Venezuelas of the world. I'm not saying they should be aligned with the US and The West. But stay out of the world political bullshit until you get your country in order first. The amount of political positioning Dilma has been doing lately is sickening, as its blatantly to take the heat and criticism off of herself. Her approval rating plummeted until all the bullshit with the US. Now it's going back up solely because of this. And unfortunately there is a good chunk people of brasileiros that are falling for it.
Brazilian economy is expanding again but long-term challenges remain, says OECD http://www.oecd.org/newsroom/brazil...ing-again-but-long-term-challenges-remain.htm
Brazil should continue efforts to boost education and improve young people’s job prospects http://www.oecd.org/newsroom/brazil...ucationandimproveyoungpeoplesjobprospects.htm
@Mengão86 You really think brazil will improve its economic disparity? For a country with many socialistic policys you would expect to see more lower middle class people being able to live better. No one even talks about the Mechanic or Restuarant employee...
At all... Like you know I hate statistics but there is no way Brazil should be behind Mexico in mean household income. I know you know Brazilians who had to move here illegally just to send money back there for there family..
Snowden offers to help Brazil probe U.S. surveillance Brazil’s Folha de S. Paulo newspaper has published a letter under the byline of Edward Snowden, in which the former National Security Agency contractor offers to assist Brazil in uncovering potential U.S. espionage crimes against Brazilian citizens and makes a plea for a foreign government to grant him permanent political asylum. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/snowden-offers-to-help-brazil-probe-us-surveillance-2013-12-17 http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/intern...edward-snowden-to-seek-asylum-in-brazil.shtml
Anyone have any opinions on Dilma cozying up to Cuba more and more? The huge investiment in financing the port there, and another large loan. Just my opinion here, but they (Lula and her) are treading in very deep and murky waters now in regards to how the country is aligning politically and economically. They had the chance to capitalize on the growth 4 years ago, but it seems they did everything to ward off true investment and now the they are reaping what they sowed. Brazil is becoming more and more like Los Hermanos Los Hermanos (who are now fvcked thanks to the Kirchners) are becoming more and more like Venezuela And Venezuela is becoming the next Cuba, (All that Oil money and still the country is how it is)
The comedian (Porta dos Fundos) who made this video and his family are getting all sorts of threats, including death threats. It's a pretty good one.
I guess it is there only option if they can't align with the United States. If I was from Latin america i'd probably despise the United States but you're right about them going in the wrong direction.
