Exactly. There are some guys in my league that had short careers in MLS and couldn't hack it. And let me tell you, they are RIDICULOUSLY, absurdly good. Most players in my league are very experienced: Lots of former ODP, USL, NASL, D1 and D2 college players. And the MLS rejects are still so much better than everyone else it's not even funny.

I believe he was cut from the Chicago Fire early in his career.

Demerit has always been fascinating to me. A guy that has almost none of the tangibles needed to be successful at the pro/international level, but managed to be an extremely effective player just by pure will.

He played for Chicago Fire Premier the development team for the Chicago Fire then he worked his way up from 7tier soccer in England all the way to 2nd tier... and now he is finally in the MLS in Vancouver... So yes it's possible to make it the MLS it took Demerit his whole life he's 33 and played his first MLS game in 2011.

That should just be a reminder to those who aren't playing competitive college or pro soccer that think they can just walk on to take a look at Demerit. He had to jump through hoops and start at the bottom of 7 tier soccer and work his way up. So don't even think about MLS unless your already playing pro, been in a youth academy, or playing college soccer.

People need to keep an eye out for Open Tryouts. The Indy Eleven(NASL Team in 2014) is holding open tryouts this week and again in August. indyeleven.com for more details.

And this was true even in 1996, when the standard was much lower than today. Matt McKeon, who played in MLS as a defensive midfield enforcer and was considered to be not very skilled, played in an amateur league in St. Louis in the offseason and was the best #10 in that league. Seth Stammler, another MLS defensive midfielder, played in one game as a forward for a New York area amateur team and literally scored at will; they drew 4-4, with their opponents taking the lead four times and Stammler responding with a solo goal within minutes each time. Jamar Beasley, MLS reject, scored almost 3 goals a game in a Chicago amateur league during a one-year break from pro soccer in 2002-03.

Actually, Demerit made it all the way to the Premier League in England with Watford. His story is inspiring, but you're right that it's not like he came out of nowhere. He did play high level club and college soccer. I'm sure that if he stayed in the US, he would've made it on a USL team and probably found a spot on an MLS team before too long.

I know there are sport agencies that work with professional clubs and organize tryouts for their teams. One in particular that I know of is SportCampTravel. They have good relationships with teams in Europe and may be able to find you a trial if anyone here is interested for the future. Their website is www.sportcamptravel.com
    Good luck!

Well that Flute or Fluke guy the Fullback for Colorado, he tried out for the Atlanta Silverbacks a few years back, was signed to their NPSL team (Reserves), not sure how many games he played for the Atlanta main team before going on loan to Colorado where he became their starting Fullback.

Is rare, but it can happen.

USLPRO and NASL pay much less than MLS, but it would be easier to catch on with a team from those leagues and show if you are any good, if so then get transferred to an MLS team.

The take home point here is that he had been playing professional soccer. He wasn't some Sunday leaguer.

I don't know how much you know about the USA, but Colorado has only one big city, Denver. The Colorado Rapids of MLS play in Commerce City, a suburb of Denver. If you're not good enough to play for them, I don't think Colorado would be a good place for a professional soccer player.

There is a PDL team, Real Colorado Foxes, in Highland Park, CO. That's a southern suburb of Denver. PDL is amateur.
And Colorado Rovers, a NPSL team in Westminster, CO. That's a northwest suburb of Denver. Also amateur.
