Playing Illarra and Khedira as a double 6 (first time he's tried it this season), Arbeloa AND Coentrao as the FBs, persisting with Benzema as a striker, and leaving our best midfielder on the bench for no apparent reason isn't being stubborn, it's being idiotic. No one can seriously defend those kind of terrible selections in such a massive derby with the league hopes on the line already.

In his first press conference Don Carlo said that he wants the team to have a clear idea in attack, a clear idea of what everyone has to do. I know it's early but i am not seeing that at all, quite the contrary actually, most of the players look clueless.

The tactics that Atleti pulled off last night were awesome, but not that complicated for us to solve. If Atleti is able to close us down in OUR OWN STADIUM, what should we expect in important CL matches?

Very disappointed with everyone, they all need to step it up.

This is exactly what i thought about the last game as well, it's amazing that we have only let in 2 goals over that period

The players have to know what their roles are now. The defenders should come forward, why is it that fullbacks do all the attacking? It should be even. Defensive midfielders who hold the passes are Modric and Khedira, shouldn't be over complicated. Isco is the player who looks for the killer pass, he is the playmaker and must make the right passes. Ronaldo and Bale just like that take aim and do it properly. Benzema is a striker who needs to finish of his chances. About free roles, the passing starts from the back and ends up front, good long balls from Khedira and Modric who are the main sources of passes up front. Ronaldo and Bale run against the opposition. Pass and move is a good way too, a simple pass is all that is needed sometimes.

I was just reading the forum melt down from yesterday and had a few thoughts:

@YOUNGSTARS87 listens to old school rap songs when he is depressed after a Realmadrid loss.

Ozil would have had to be brought off with twenty minutes left, nothing new there.

I don't think Benzema is exactly happy with the expectation that he has to play and perform every time all the time. Sometimes I get the impression that Benzema would rather be somewhere else doing something else.

And what better coach than Carlo Ancelotti are you going to hire?

And who is going to step in as president who has that kind of money lying around. Unfortunately the club is stuck with Perez for the foreseeable future he's just been elected to another four years term. I know, I know he was reelected on the idea that he was a changed man who would do things different and it sucks being lied to.

Yeah I think people are forgetting that we have at three starters out injured. Xabi, Varane, and Marcelo will be no brainers when fit. Add to that bringing along Bale and Illara slowly. Carlo's got a lot on his plate and it is going to to take some time for new players and a new system to be fully implemented.

Mourinho required two full season before his results could be judged. And to be fair his team looked better at the end of two season than it did at any other point. Carlo's problem is that he did not issue a statement so the press would know his performance as a manager could not be accurately or credibly criticized for two years.

You know what else has happened during that time that could actually have some relevance to the performance of the team?

    Iker Casillas.

You finally seem to be catching on a month after the transfer window closes and the season starts we should elect a new president to sign back the players we sold.

As per the Mourinho thing we were already experimenting with triple pivots and fielding the likes of the Diarra's. If Ancelotti wants the support of the ultras he's gonna have to poke someone in the eye when the team goes to Barcelona.

A steady curve, is that curve based soley on the Copa del Rey because I believe there were a couple of hiccups to Barcelona including losing 5-0 and getting knocked out of the CL. But, but we beat them in the Copa del Rey you tell me.

I agree that we should at least wait to see how Ancelotti does in the Copa del Rey as it is only fair.

Ronaldo has to be receiving the ball the most in the side. Bale needs time and shouldn't be the go to player just yet but he can be later on. Ronaldo has much to do with himself also, he comes inside and goes outside with the ball, inside the box to latch onto a cross with his head. He does it all, he just needs to do that. From deep players find him. His movement needs to show its improvement yet if he wants to be this type of player.

What defines "good and bad" coach?

Marcelo is one of the players Ancelotti has on his list of going out as subs during a game, which tells me he's not all that hot about him as we are. Varane is a kid, and will still have his ups and downs - if we're depending on him to fix this defence, we're going to burn him out. Xabi Alonso had a pretty bad season overall last year. Illaramendi was signed to gently push him to the substitutes bench, he's pretty much a direct replacement.

Mourinho gave a direction of how he wants to play, and we knew what he would play and how. He signed players that fit his idea, and with or without success, the idea of how we'll play was obvious.

We played three difficult to stomach games in the start of the season:

Mallorca 0:0 away, Osasuna 1:0 at home, and the Levante away game 0:0, that we had after the game against Real Sociedad that we won under maximum effort since it was a difficult away game at that point (2:1).

After those? 6:1 Depor, 1:4 Malaga, 6:1 Racing, 1:3 Hercules, 2:0 Atleti, 5:1 Athletic, and a difficult 0:1 against Gijon. Those were all enjoyable game,s lots of goals, and top performances against weak teams on one hand, but on the other hand, our season hasn't started with any difficult obstacles so far either.

We lost 5:0 to Barcelona. That doesn't change the fact that we were scoring lots and lots of goals and gaining on a lot of confidence. The 5:0 was a major lesson. I hope this result against Atletico is as much of a lesson for Ancelotti as the 5:0 was for Mourinho, because Mourinho's results were feeling better. If we'd have to play Barcelona next week people would predict the worst.

The way we treat Jese and Morata, who are both superb talents, and not "youngsters" any more, i have no shadow of a doubt that we'd have missed out on Iker nowadays.

While Ancelotti experiments with six defender formations to save a 0:1 against Elche.
Getting knocked out in the CL in the semi final. Which was a massive improvement.

We didn't sign the Uncle to gift away the League by December and focus on the Copa del Rey.

The problem with Isco is he is being utilised incorrectly. He is playing on the left of a narrow 4-4-2. It's utter stupidity. Like you said, he is a playmaker who loves to thread passes. He should be playing in the centre like Ozil used to do for us. We have no player right now playing in between the lines. That space between the opponents midfield and defence...that's where Isco should be a la Messi a la Mata a la Silva. No number 10. No creativity. He should play centrally with Bale and Ronaldo either side of him in a 4-2-3-1. Defend as a team and like fucking lions or you will win nothing.

You cannot praise Benema for doing all the things midfielders and wingers should be doing and then excuse him from criticism for not doing the things a striker should be doing.
Isco is playing at about the same level Ozil did when he first came. I only expect Isco to improve.
Ronaldo is usually careful about his public declarations and if he's said this then I think it is clear the coach should be supported.

The previous system was only good enough to get to the CL semi finals we changed coaches and systems because we want to win it all.

That may be but Alonso is without a doubt a more skilled player than Khedira and would easily take his place in any lineup.

Illaramendi and Alonso in the midfield is a terrible idea. Both are pretty slow, and that's only one disadvantage this combination has.

Also, after that little show that Barcelona pulled after the Elche game, I doubt we will be getting any penalties or 50-50 calls anytime soon lol.

because ghosts won the Spanish title 2 seasons ago?

System was OK, and with Bale we can potentially break the 121 goals-record if we play like that (+ if we had Ozil).

Possession football is ridiculous. Just so you know that is the style of play the team had when we last won the CL. And just so you know it was orgasmic to watch.

We have the players to play possession football and win with it. We've got many other things to work out for it to be successful though and I doubt Carlo will do it as he's not good enough.

We did? We lined up in the final with Figo, Zidane, Scolari, and Makelele as a single DM, Raul and Morientes playing with two strikers. We had more possession than Leverkusen, but marginally (far from the Barcelona / Spain model), and they had the upper hand in certain parts of the game in terms of possession.

Because he is reckless, hot headed, red carded prone, not to mention he lacks the brain and technical abilities to play midfielder. Hey why Ancelotti does not push Ramos in the mid...

What can be read here dear god. Pepe in midfield...fckin facepalm x6.

Everything Gattuso didn't have either. Hey, you know what? Maybe Pepe actually is the midfielder Ancelotti needed. :D

Gattuso had everything he needed to play in his respective position, so dont insult him comparing him with that maniac Pepe. :D But i must congrats to Pepe, he finally let his moron number 1. position in my list towards Benzema and then Di Maria who is very close.

Why do people call Pepe red card prone? Especially when his partner is the King of Red? I think in his seven season Pepe has like five red cards and most of them are for second yellow accumulation. For a physical, aggressive defender with a bit of a bad rep that's a pretty "serviceable" amount.

I've called Pepe many things over the years but he definitely isn't a card magnet. For what Ancelotti seems to be trying to emphasize he could deputize as a stay-at-home DM until Ancelotti gets everyone back and/or these players learn to practically apply his "system" on the pitch.

I wish that was "just a loss". Hard to ignore the conglomeration of the lack of ideas, creativity and drive/intensity.

The irony is, we've been like this all season. The Galatasary match like many of us pointed out was a mirage.

Don't talk smack about Pepe ok? People will get touchy, especially because he's the "best 3rd choice CB in the world". Some PMSing lady may even throw a pissy fit because you don't like him. :p

The only league match where we looked pretty good this season was against Bilbao.

Other than that, we struggled against minnows most of the time.
