Cal Poly wins 3-2 over Penn with game winning goal on nice diving header by Connor Drechsler in last few minutes.

I meant it helped in that Akron couldn't play the way they were accustomed to and had some sloppy touches themselves. In those conditions, a set piece is more likely to be a troublemaker for the defense. In that sense, it was totally unsurprising, especially given the angle and that whoever was taking those knew where to put it to cause the keeper all sorts of trouble.

By the way, the usual weather around here at this time of year is 70-85 and dry, but humid. Just two days ago, it was 92. On Tuesday it was 94.

I'm just saying it hurt VCU too. Did it help the set piece? Could have. Could have easy hurt the set piece if the player didn't catch it right due to the rain. VCU has shown recently it can break down defenses as it showed with New Mexico and Maryland. One thing VCU didn't encounter yet as a team is weather. Only weather affected game it had was ODU and the game was postponed shortly after kick off. Very easy to expect a loss when you go on the road to #7 (a tough stadium no less and its home opener) especially when you haven't ever been in the elements together. It was a tough hard fought game for both teams. Akron had a fair amount of chances and VCU got a couple as well. VCU put the ball into dangerous positions in the game as well even if those won't show up on the shot totals. As far as the free kick it may have been influenced by the weather but we could easily say that the same happens in regular weather. VCU made their chances count and Akron didn't which was the determining factor at the end of the game.

The two 'reds' at the 31' for fighting probably should have been 'yellows'. The straight 'red' in 36' on Charlotte player for very dangerous tackle from behind. The physical play obviously subsided after the 'reds'. I was amazed at how Charlotte was able to hold tight in the back and continue their counter attacks with only 9 players for about 75'. Charlotte's Coach Langan obviously had a well planned strategy of substitutions after 1/2 time. I hope we have 'legs' for Sunday's game versus Memphis?

The scoreless match between UC Riverside and San Diego was oddly refereed. If you just saw the box score you would think it was a slugfest-- 39 fouls called (24 on SD), two yellows, and two straight reds, but it was actually a decent game apart from constant (and rather one-sided) whistle-blowing.

Unfortunately, those two red cards will affect San Diego's game with UCLA. San Diego will be missing at least three starters on Sunday--two from their back line and an important midfielder. (MF Torrey DeArmas and defender Eli Galbraith-Knapp red cards in Riverside game in 2nd OT; center back Julian Ringhof still injured from Fullerton game).

Simply repping Timon's post is insufficient. There were several stints during the match when Akron strung 50+ passes together. I was counting. But number of accurate passes does not go up on the scoreboard. VCU GK did a serviceable job, but nothing spectacular. Chalk this result up to very poor finishing on Akron's part. VCU converted one of their few chances and then made it stick.
Watch out for these Rams! Using the Boxing analogy, they are a dangerous puncher.

OK, we're obviously talking past one another on this weather thing. When rain gets involved, both the likelihood of a set piece to get knocked in and the likelihood of the "weaker" team to have success goes up.

FWIW, Akron was practicing all week in hot, humid, and non-rainy weather. I know Ohio has a reputation as a frozen tundra, but not in mid September.

Pretty much. However, this is probably the most dominant (first half) possession with no payoff I've seen since maybe 2007-08. Akron did that a lot back in those days.

From Thursday night - UC Davis 1-0 at St. Mary's - the difference this time for Davis is they made their PK.

Watching the game live, I thought the game was another huge shots advantage for Davis like all their previous games this season. However, the box score has it only 9-7; however, the telling stat is 5-0 shots on goal.

Butler 1-0 over NIU Friday night at the NIU Adidas Classic. Looks like West Virginia might be the team to beat in the MAC this year. Everyone else seems to be having their problems.

Half time: Pitt 1 Boston College 0.
Nobody clearly dominates the game. Very few clear opportunities to score.
Both teams could benefit to pause their play time to time, instead of rushing the ball forward and oh surprise to loose it!
Final result still well in the hands of both team. I would not bet my salary on one of them. Up to them to improve their offence game.

Radford holds national scoring leader Pete Caringi to a solo assist (what a slacker!) but UMBC wins 4-1 behind a brace from Stephen Ho, a player whose jersey I will buy if he ever goes pro.

2-1 for Boston College against Pitt. Two goals in the last 10 minutes, the second one in the last minute.
Pit too naive. When you cannot win a game, you must know not to lose it.
BC was more present in the last 20 minutes, Pitt letting them playing, less aggressive defensively. Clearly illustrated by the first BC's goal where the player is left alone having hours to carefully place his header.
Lynd, Pitt's GK made again some good saves.
    Good night everybody.

Clemson stays perfect with a 1-0 win over NC State in Raleigh. Manolo Sanchez, the Louisville transfer, had the goal. State had the better of play most of the second half but couldn't convert.

Elsewhere, UConn suffers its first loss, losing to Bradley.

Army with an OT win over Fordham - go figure! - that improves Russell Payne's Black Knights to 5-0-0.

Appropriately, Army's defense has been flawless this season as they've yet to allow a goal. That said, they aren't exactly playing the toughest schedule; their 5 opponents are a combined 2-19-1.
